To be annoyed by the Duchess of Cambridge's claim that home schooling is 'exhausting'

I accept that lockdown has had an impact on everyone to some extent, however privileged. But I can't help being irritated by this. Even if we accept that she is doing the home schooling herself without any help, I don't think there is any comparison between her situation and that of many other people. I am not saying lockdown isn't difficult for her.....but it is a million times harder if you are say a single parent, struggling with home schooling and a minimum wage job which you may lose any time, worried sick about your and DC future if this happens. And doing it in a poky flat instead of a vast country estate.

And I know she may be trying to show empathy with the rest of us. But TBH I would have much more respect for the royals if they would just acknowledge their privilege rather than claim common ground which just isn't there.

Magenta , you make the power of the royal family sound almost sinister ...

carltongirl · 03/02/2021 07:12

Agree OP, really irritating. They misread the public and despite efforts of all four brothers and wives to be more in touch, come across as a mixture of dim and insincere.
can’t understand why she didn’t say ‘even with all my many privileges, I am finding these changes tough, can’t imagine how those with less help. Couldn't agree more. The 'all in it together', fake regular-mom crap doesn't wash with me. I can't decide whether this lot are worse with this posturing than the remote, formal predecessors. I think both show that however good your PR, this is a rotten system that perpetuates class and wealth inequality. Her insensitivity to the reality of life for many people at the moment really grates.

Mamasaurus123 · 03/02/2021 07:36

Live is completely different for everyone, no matter how privileged! She may be struggling, just a different struggle to everyone else! Same storm, different boat. Doesn't make her struggle any less valid.

Smncandles · 03/02/2021 07:37

Same storm??
We've dealt with that weak argument already if you read the whole thread

malificent7 · 03/02/2021 07:39

Yes but a big, solid yaught can weather the storm more comfortably than a small , shoddy rowing boat Mamasaurus.

KeflavikAirport · 03/02/2021 08:16

Yes the same storm analogy is pretty fucking distasteful when poor people are drowning off our shores every week

AlwaysLatte · 03/02/2021 08:29

It is exhausting! And I say that as one of two parents at home with unlimited time to spend on doing it!

Smncandles · 03/02/2021 08:32

Always
Do you also have cooks cleaners nannies millions in the bank and acres of private parks ?

Smncandles · 03/02/2021 08:34

And more importantly , are all these luxuries funded by the tax payer ?

Bookwords · 03/02/2021 08:37

What's your nanny doing @AlwaysLatte ?

AlwaysLatte · 03/02/2021 08:59

@Bookwords no Nanny here 😂
But part of the 'exhaustion' is the worry about their well-being as well as the physically home tutoring for hours every day - it's a constant worry and I think it's okay for everyone to feel a bit of that no matter their circumstance.

Mamasaurus123 · 03/02/2021 09:21

@malificent7

Yes but a big, solid yaught can weather the storm more comfortably than a small , shoddy rowing boat Mamasaurus.
Yea, but my point was that it doesn't mean that it's not still a struggle 🤷‍♀️ everyone's fighting they're own battles
Smncandles · 03/02/2021 09:29

The word she used was 'exhausting'

All in it together and all that !

Bookwords · 03/02/2021 09:42

@AlwaysLatte yes part of the worry, they actual home schooling of course is done by the nanny or the tutor. So why Kate is moaning about exhaustion, I'm not sure.

She's got a lot more help than the vast majority.

truthisalie · 03/02/2021 09:51

Reminds me of one saying - "Los ricos también lloran" which is - "The rich also cry".

Smncandles · 03/02/2021 09:55

Can I point out this discussion is not about the rich .
It's about the monarchy .

I repeat:
They are funded by tax payers
They are above the law

Livingtothefull · 03/02/2021 12:47

'my point was that it doesn't mean that it's not still a struggle 🤷‍♀️ everyone's fighting they're own battles'

Yes but some people are fighting much harder battles than others. I just really don't want to hear about the battles an immensely privileged royal has particularly given she is funded by the rest of us.

what struggle? she does not work and can out her legs up all day, has a number of minions who run the house, has a nanny who probably does quite a bit of home schooling. all that without the financial worry and struggles which have become commonplace since covid.

So, in what way could she possibly struggle like the rest of us???

rosetylersbiggun · 03/02/2021 13:48

According to Vanity Fair Kate literally has a professional videographer as part of her 'staff' at Anmer (not living there but coming in to shoot when she needs him).

At a bare minimum they have a nanny, a housekeeper, a cook, a cleaner, security staff, and of course their small army of non-resident secretaries and publicists and advisers to handle all the business stuff.

They aren't changing nappies or setting up Zooms. Pretending their lives bare any resemblance to "ordinary" people is laughable and pure PR.

rosetylersbiggun · 03/02/2021 13:51

Same storm, different boat.

I once briefly worked on a huge cruise ship. It was so massive that when storms hit, you barely even noticed them unless you happened to be outside.

If you're in a rowboat when a storm hits, you die.

If you're having your hair done or watching a movie on a cruise ship massive enough to have a hair salon and a cinema, you might not even notice the storm.

What an apropos comparison.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 03/02/2021 18:37

Doesn't make her struggle any less valid
Actually money,status,staff,domestics,nannies,tutors,all diminish ones struggle
I think you’ll find Kate doesn’t struggle she had no financial or furlough worries
No gnawing doubts about future.or path ahead

She’s sorted.no struggle
It’s frankly disingenuous to suggest other wise

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 03/02/2021 19:00

This everyone is fighting their own battles Inanity
If Kate were to say her struggle or battles are weight of expectation, sureity and inevitably of her role - yes that’s a unique her own experience very few understand. I’d get it,it’s a unique set of circumstances

Pretending to be like everyone else,as others posters frame as battling , struggling is tosh

JaneNorman · 03/02/2021 19:09

They aren't changing nappies or setting up Zooms.

How do you know they aren’t setting up the Zooms for their kids lessons?

So much unsubstantiated bullshit on this thread. It detracts from the real discussion.

If they cared that much about kids, they'd be making Uncle Andrew go and talk to the police in the US.
