To be annoyed by the Duchess of Cambridge's claim that home schooling is 'exhausting'

I accept that lockdown has had an impact on everyone to some extent, however privileged. But I can't help being irritated by this. Even if we accept that she is doing the home schooling herself without any help, I don't think there is any comparison between her situation and that of many other people. I am not saying lockdown isn't difficult for her.....but it is a million times harder if you are say a single parent, struggling with home schooling and a minimum wage job which you may lose any time, worried sick about your and DC future if this happens. And doing it in a poky flat instead of a vast country estate.

And I know she may be trying to show empathy with the rest of us. But TBH I would have much more respect for the royals if they would just acknowledge their privilege rather than claim common ground which just isn't there.

Everyone's allowed to feel tired. But not all tired are created equally

shindiggery · 29/01/2021 23:45

But it's just amazing how idealistic people are. It's not money that would make Kate not exhausted. It's money combined with an ability to walk away.

Lancrelady80 · 29/01/2021 23:45

Sorry, quote fail. Was in response to Downriver 23:17

marbellamarc · 29/01/2021 23:45

She's not denying it's harder for others at all.

I thought she just said it was exhausting, did she mention other parents?

Writerandreader · 29/01/2021 23:46

I feel sorry for royaks in lockdown remember they won't be able to bend the rules and have a chat with a mate over coffee in the park or let little Johnny have a kick about with a mate. As many families are doing.

They are probably miserable and lonely and having to be totally strict about rules including no friends even to chat in the street and I'm sure she is doing most childcare herself they can hardly have loads of help in can they? Even if she has a nanny it's still shit having your kids stuck home all day.

MusicalTrifleMonkey · 29/01/2021 23:46

Why can’t se be struggling? Why can’t her children be having a hard time? So because one person if more fortunate than another they are never allowed to say ‘I’m finding this difficult’?

We don’t know what is going on, but she is allowed to say ‘This is hard’. Maybe she is finding it really tough. Maybe it’s affecting her mentally. Everyone has difficult times.

Yes it must be really shit in that big house with all those grounds. I'm surprised she can get out of bed every morning,
marbellamarc · 29/01/2021 23:48

@shindiggery I never said she wasn't exhausted just that her exhaustion may be slightly different to others. And I wasn't just talking about having childcare, I find all the cooking, cleaning, extra food prep more annoying then home schooling.
I had nannies & my mum was a SAHM. We certainly didn't hang out of her all day & she was very involved.

shindiggery · 29/01/2021 23:49

Because people are mean and jealous, I think.

It's horrendous double standards as middle class parents are on here moaning all the time and no one says 'Think of the working class in their flats' then, it's all 'Why isn't the school doing more, especially as you've paid?'!

marbellamarc · 29/01/2021 23:49

It was a bad PR move

marbellamarc · 29/01/2021 23:49

plenty of posters including myself have said that @shindiggery

Mamabear12 · 29/01/2021 23:50

Oh I get so annoyed by this as well. I understand everyone has problems and the super rich are only human. But it’s super annoying when she says how hard it is trying to be relatable to everyone else when she has a huge apartment (house) in London and huge country house with lots of land. Plus staff, of cleaners, cook, nanny etc. If she decides she wants to take a nap and leave the homeschooling to William and the nanny she could easily do it. While the rest of simply don’t have this luxury.

How hard can it be homeschooling your kids w a full time nanny, cook and staff to keep your huge house and country estate in order? And before anyone says we are in lockdown and they don’t have a staff; I highly doubt that! As their staff is live in and locked down with them! So continue working for them.

It would have been far more better to say “we sympathise with everyone who is struggling and have such a hard time.” Or better yet don’t comment on it!

marbellamarc

Too many typos to make head or tail of that, other than I note you're rowing back - I can't be bothered to wade through, I'm too exhausted.

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 29/01/2021 23:50

@marbellamarc

She's not denying it's harder for others at all.

I thought she just said it was exhausting, did she mention other parents?

She was asked for one word.
minniemango · 29/01/2021 23:51

@shindiggery

I wish some posters here could try having a nanny, especially combined with working from home.

It's like a golden childcare tree in your minds, isn't it.

They come and find you. They have little homing devices and they can open doors. It's a dreadful thing. Modern nannies cannot prevent it, they don't have the weapons. Even DoC's children come and find her, as a previous post describes.

No Grin

She probably has a nanny per child and of course if she tells the nanny/ies she doesn't want to be disturbed, she won't be.

She could just be in a different wing of the house if she wanted to be.

shindiggery · 29/01/2021 23:51

She's not denying it's harder for others at all.

I thought she just said it was exhausting, did she mention other parents?

Yes, and this is denying it's harder for others how?

marbellamarc · 29/01/2021 23:51

If Kate was on The Only Way of Essex, she might be fighting on a race course while merry hell goes on at home, because she could. But nothing I've seen has led me to think she is that kind of parent.

Not sure what point you are trying to make here?

shindiggery · 29/01/2021 23:52

minniemango

You're naive.

It is really not like that.

And she doesn't have a nanny per child at all!

Throwaway99 · 29/01/2021 23:52

It's a bloody PR move. Tell the plebs the very privileged have it as hard as them. So STFU.

PuppyMonkey · 29/01/2021 23:52

And having to cook tea and go to Asda and sort the washing and clean the toilet and clean up kids’ puke and pick the dog shit up, poor royals Grin

marbellamarc · 29/01/2021 23:53

Yeah you definitely have not read my post correctly.

shindiggery · 29/01/2021 23:54

marbellamarc

Acknowledging that money and a detached attitude in combination could lead to a life where you're not exhausted despite having a nanny but it doesn't follow and isn't the case for most!

Canyoncall · 29/01/2021 23:55

Yabu you don't get to negate her feelings and opinions based on the fact the others have it worse. It's how she feels, and who says that they still have all of their staff?! Maybe most of the staff are furloughed etc. You don't know what it's like to be her so you can't possibly say how she feels.

Of course I do! I’m paying the taxes for her lifestyle and that of her family .. is she suffering financially? No she isn’t. Read the room - she has not got a clue how people are affected

PuppyPlanning · 29/01/2021 23:55

So presumably you’d prefer her to say “I don’t know what people are complaining about. Homeschooling isn’t stressful at all. And nobody needs to worry about anything”.

Throwaway99 · 29/01/2021 23:55

@PuppyMonkey

Poor Kate. It must be so very hard. The more I think about it the more I think they must think we are stupid to fall for the spin.
