Who is right about FSM money

gruffalosprickles · 28/01/2021 19:20

A person has done the weekly food shop using their own money. The food the children will eat cost more then the value of an FSM voucher. They did this food shop because they didn't know if or when they would get a FSM voucher. The money spent will cover the children's three meals a day.

They then receive an evoucher for FSM which is to feed two children for lunches for two weeks.

Person A says the evoucher should only be spent on food for the children.

Person B says it's ok to spend some of the evoucher on food for the adult as well as the children because they have already paid for the children's food.

Which one is right ?

Is the food that the dc eat that different to what the rest of the house eat? Why does it have to be separate food?

Also, why can’t you just ask a normal question rather than a riddle?

GrumpyHoonMain · 29/01/2021 04:26

A. The voucher is for the kids food and should be spent on the kids food.

Oreservoir · 29/01/2021 04:37

It’s just common sense that the answer is B.
Also reminds me of parents that insist child allowance is the child’s own money.
No it’s not. If you are putting it in the child’s bank as savings then you don’t need it.

The FSM voucher is just income, like any other money that comes into the house. It all goes into the pot and gets spent a according to need. If there's any left over it could even pay for some wants too.

As long as the DC are properly fed, clothed, all bills are paid etc, it doesn't matter which money or vouchers pay for what and there isn't really any distinction.

As for whether or not people 'don't need the money if they can afford to save' well that depends. Some people can make their money go a lot further than others, plus people have different priorities. If one person does their shopping in a cheaper shop, they will have money left over compared with the person who uses the more expensive shop, or buys more expensive items eg fresh fillet steak instead of frozen lean steak mince. Nutritionally very similar, but an order of magnitude difference in the price.

StoppinBy · 29/01/2021 05:36

B but what is person A's logic for their thinking?

GnomeDePlume · 29/01/2021 05:54

B

FSM voucher is just money. Money doesnt have a label.

Shoxfordian · 29/01/2021 07:10

B is right

Bookwords · 29/01/2021 07:45

A. The voucher is for the kids food and should be spent on the kids food

So you would have two loaves of bread, one for adults, or be for children?

A packet of tomato's for parents and one for the children, two cucumbers, two tubs of spread etc?

You wouldn't you'd just buy whatever is needed and use accordingly.

CareBear50 · 29/01/2021 07:59

B

Eskarina1 · 29/01/2021 08:01

B. I'm guessing person A has never been in a situation where the adult skips meals in order to feed the child.

Nopreservatives · 29/01/2021 08:04

Provided the children are well fed the voucher can and should be spent in the best way for the family.

So B, although I wouldn't even say it needs to be food, if food isn't what the family need because they've already bought that .

luxxlisbon · 29/01/2021 08:17

Is this a real question? Obviously B, the extra cost of the school lunches has already occurred and now the late voucher tops up the general grocery pot.

gruffalosprickles · 29/01/2021 16:28

Person A & B are the same person, they had two conflicted views - one that it was wrong to include some items for their own food on the order to be paid for with the voucher and the other that it was OK as they had already bought the food to pay for the breakfast, lunch and dinner for the children.

What? How can person A and person B be the same person when their opinions on the subject are completely opposite?
LAgeDeRaisin · 29/01/2021 16:34

B. The idea of A is completely ridiculous.

What if it were used for part of the ingredients for a lasagne for lunches for the week. Are the adults supposed to scrape off the bechamel because it was FSM vouchers that bought the milk?!

gruffalosprickles · 29/01/2021 16:38

What?
How can person A and person B be the same person when their opinions on the subject are completely opposite?

They were feeling guilty about buying some food for themself with the voucher on the one hand but feeling that it was OK on the other hand.

Tell person A to keep there big nose out! Person b is correct

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 29/01/2021 16:42

Of course its ok. My FSM voucher goes into the 'pot' along with child benefit and the child element of UC. I pay the bills out of that pot. No idea which bit of money pays which bill. But the DC are housed, warm, fed and clothed.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 29/01/2021 16:43

money will need to come from somewhere else for power to cook the lunches, etc.

  • cheaper to cook one large meal than separate
