Who is right about FSM money

gruffalosprickles · 28/01/2021 19:20

A person has done the weekly food shop using their own money. The food the children will eat cost more then the value of an FSM voucher. They did this food shop because they didn't know if or when they would get a FSM voucher. The money spent will cover the children's three meals a day.

They then receive an evoucher for FSM which is to feed two children for lunches for two weeks.

Person A says the evoucher should only be spent on food for the children.

Person B says it's ok to spend some of the evoucher on food for the adult as well as the children because they have already paid for the children's food.

Which one is right ?

As long as the children are fed, it all goes into the pot.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 28/01/2021 19:33

I just spend it on whatever's needed , I bought eggs this week but neither of the younger dc eat them. I also have an online shop delivery and fruit delivery from a farm shop so there's plenty of food they do eat !

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 28/01/2021 19:34

They go towards the overall food budget and people in the house eat the food. As long as the children are fed it doesn't matter.

ConcreteUnderpants · 28/01/2021 19:34

How could anyone possibly think ‘A’?
Really interested to know the logic behind your choice.

B

VettiyaIruken · 28/01/2021 19:38

B.
A effectively advanced the money to buy the food. The food has now been purchased. The voucher at this point is to reimburse the advance.

Are a and b the same family cos fuck me, a is petty and not the sharpest tool in the shed.

I am expecting money for food. I have to buy food but the food money hasn't arrived yet. I buy food with money that's for my phone bill. Later that week, i get the money that was for food and I use it to replace the money for the phone bill that I had to spend on food because the food money hadn't arrived.
By A's logic, I can't pay my phone bill because I have to spend the newly arrived money on food. 🤔

Got a voucher to buy food for the kids. ✅
Got food for the kids. ✅

It just buys food for the house - which adults or kids can eat. Ideally increasing the variety and nutrients.

Whammyyammy · 28/01/2021 19:40

B

Theunamedcat · 28/01/2021 19:41

B but I've got to say mine more than covers their lunches so it goes towards extra fruit we wouldn't usually be able to afford

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 28/01/2021 19:44

B so long as there is going to be enough food for lunch for the second week!

Imiss2019 · 28/01/2021 19:44

Can’t you just post properly and engage in a discussion rather than this cryptic a thinks b thinks nonsense. Makes for a really dull thread!

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 28/01/2021 19:44

B
I also cannot understand the logic of people saying A

greyspottedgoose · 28/01/2021 19:49

My food shop now costs more because of lunches and snacks, our fsm money goes directly in my bank, it went straight back out on my gas/electric bill last week, but I'd already paid for the food shop earlier in the week 🤷🏻‍♀️ I didn't check I'd spent to the exact penny on lunches, I just made sure there was enough tasty and healthy food available for everyone all week and that's good enough for me

gobbynorthernbird · 28/01/2021 20:02

A reminds me of those dickhead exes who argue paying (usually a tiny amount of) maintenance because it doesn't all go on the kids. Like the ex-wife is failing to house, feed, and clothe the DC so she can spend £20 per month on getting a manicure.

BackforGood · 28/01/2021 20:10

Not often we are in 100% agreement.

Obviously B

It's like Child benefit - it is an additional amount into the budget for when you have children. One month the 'equivalent amount' might be spent on shoes and new uniform, another month it goes towards the electricity bill, another month it goes towards the food bill. It isn't a literal pile of notes that you can only buy one thing with.

In effect, in your scenario, the person that paid for the food shop has lent the money to the food bill in advance of the FSM money arriving, and now it has come in, they need to be paid back.

LadyCatStark · 28/01/2021 20:13

B as long as the money is spent on food.

Toocold · 28/01/2021 20:13

NoSquirrels · 28/01/2021 20:16

Is Person A worried they’ll get judged or ‘found out’ without other people knowing the context?

Obviously the voucher =£30 for food to feed 2x DC.

Food has been bought to £30+X to feed 2x DC.

So clearly you can put £30 back in the pot.

But it depends on Person A’s logic whether they’re bring mad or not!

VegetableLove · 28/01/2021 20:17

B.

Obviously. A is a wanker Grin

kowari · 28/01/2021 20:17

B, as long as the children are benefitting from the full amount, such as more variety of fruit and veg or better quality food if they usually are fed on less than £15 a week.

1Morewineplease · 28/01/2021 20:19

The priority should be on food for the children. But the parent would be very wise to spend the money on whole family meals.. not that £15 per week will go far.

steppemum · 28/01/2021 20:20

I do the weekly shop for everyone.

I put the voucher against the total.

Which is the same as person B
