According to DP "most people" have eaten dinner by 6pm.

Referring to adults, not children.

He's obsessed with eating at a time I consider pretty early.

I'm giving him the side eye Hmm

We eat dinner between 4:30 & 5:30. If I’m working then my dinner time is around 10:30-11pm.

MamaSharkDooDooDooDooDooDooo · 28/01/2021 17:25

We eat at 5. But DCs are 7 and younger and DH works nights.
We used to eat at 7-8 on nights off when the children were babies but I think my natural eating time is 6pm if I could choose when to eat...

Jengnr · 28/01/2021 17:26

6pm is well late for dinner. I’ve usually had my tea by then too.

Familyshopper · 28/01/2021 17:27

If I ate my dinner before 7pm I’d be starving later plus who these days has time to get the dinner on the table before 6

bridgetreilly · 28/01/2021 17:28

Depends where you are in the country, what hours you work, whether or not you have children. 6pm is pretty early, though.

Morgysmum · 28/01/2021 17:28

When I aren't working. I start cooking at 5pm. Normally eating about 6pm.
My dad didn't like to eat late, he considered after 6pm as late.
His mum always had her tea around this time.
However my partners parents often eat late. But my mum was from a time when eating after 7, would lead to wait gain.
So she wouldn't eat after 7pm.

Familyshopper · 28/01/2021 17:28

Wow ! Are you not hungry again by 9

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 28/01/2021 17:28

Just eating my fish and chips now!

irregularegular · 28/01/2021 17:29

No I think most working people wouldn't be home until 6. We aim to eat 7/7.30 but it can often be closer to 8.

wooda180 · 28/01/2021 17:30

We eat at 5 when the kids do. Hubby will usually have a light snack later in the evening but he'd only snack beforehand if we ate later anyway

DanceItOut · 28/01/2021 17:31

If eating with the kids generally we sit down to eat 5.30-6pm so yes usually pre 6 but if eating without the kids I usually eat around 7 maybe just before.

Living6767 · 28/01/2021 17:31

We mainly eat at 5.30

NeedToKnowMoreThanThis · 28/01/2021 17:35

6pm is far too early (unless you have small children I guess). We tend to eat between 7 - 7:30pm during the week, depending on how long the meal takes to prepare. Our son is 13 and he would start complaning about being hungry if we left it any longer than this.

BonnieDundee · 28/01/2021 17:35

YANBU. I finish work at 5 pm travel home and then make dinner. Not sure how l could get dinner made and eaten in half an hour. Pretty sure I'm not unusual and indeed many people finish work later than me and/or have longer commutes.

maddy68 · 28/01/2021 17:37

We Don't eat until at least 8pm .

purplebunny2012 · 28/01/2021 17:38

Far too early for me

midnightstar66 · 28/01/2021 17:39

Gosh no, not even dc unless we squeeze it before activities rather than after but that's rarely the case

EverythingsSoComplicated · 28/01/2021 17:40

Dinners on the table at 5 in my house. Couldn't handle eating late. Kids are in bed at 7. Unless it's not a school night then it's a little later.

EdHelpPls · 28/01/2021 17:40

We eat together at 5/5.30 as that's when the kids are ready for it and I couldn't be bothered making dinner twice. I'm not hungry again before 9 or 10 the next day.
If I eat late I wake up with hunger pains early in the morning.

PattyPan · 28/01/2021 17:47

I haven’t even decided what we’re having tonight yet so does not look like we will be done by 6 today Grin I have night school at 7.30 and need to do some reading first so will probably end up eating toast with one hand and taking notes with the other...

QueenPawPaws · 28/01/2021 17:48

Depends, I'm by myself so eat when I'm hungry
Lunch at work is between 11.30 - 2 depending what I'm allocated so that affects when I have my tea really
On an early shift with early lunch I would eat about 5.30, late shift with later lunch probably 7

CatNoBag · 28/01/2021 17:49

@JumboShiitake

I'd be interested to know if anyone with experience of living in a country where people typically eat later, e.g. in Spain, would say there is less variation generally?

I think we've had everything from 4.30 to about midnight on this thread Grin *

  • not counting posters who have to eat to fit round shift work
I've lived in a country where it's normal to go out to eat as a family ranging from 3 months to 95 years old at 10pm or later and it would be a couple of hours before you were thinking of leaving. We'd often be leaving at 11-11:30 and a big table just arriving. The same at home, they'd probably eat quite late, especially at the weekend. There's a set time for a decent snack late afternoon to tide you over.

It took us a little while to get used it, but I really liked it and struggled when we visited home and eventually moved back with the big rush to eat dinner early evening. These days we tend to eat at around 8pm probably, though it varies. I tend to think of my evening meal as a signal that the day is over if that makes sense, so if I need to get anything else done in the day I need to do it before dinnertime! I try to get to bed earlier these days, so I'd need to ease myself back in again with the 10pm mealtimes!

SunshineCake · 28/01/2021 17:50

We used to have dinner at 5.45 - 6pm but today dh and I had finished dinner by around half five.

Twospaniels · 28/01/2021 17:53

We have dinner between 7 and 7.30 usually.

Rachel1874 · 28/01/2021 17:53

We eat at 5pm used to be 6.30pm pre kids.
