To be a bit freaked out - someone airdropped something on my tv

Was sitting here watching tv and suddenly it stopped and someone airdropped YouTube which opened and it had something about vodaphone phone on the top of screen. Then it stopped a few seconds later. It’s a Sony Bravia smart tv so I just turned off the WiFi on it but have we been hacked? I’m a bit freaked out.

Wasn’t anyone in the house, I checked. Teen was in shower and everyone else was in room with me and we use apple not vidaphone devices.

We live quite rurally so not a neighbour within 50m.

Do you have to be on the same WiFi to airdrop?

Who else is on your wifi? Kids?

Mum198000 · 26/01/2021 20:29

Only one teen home and she has an iPad and she was in shower at the time and it was a trump rally video that came up and she hates trump. It definitely said something about vodaphone as the device.

Bit freaked out.

Well it's someone on their phone who mistakenly mirrored to your tv. You need to check your tv security settings to stop it from happening.

Mum198000 · 26/01/2021 20:36

Do they have to be on my WiFi to do that? That worries me as nobody should be on my WiFi.

Mum198000 · 26/01/2021 20:37

I’m looking through the manual to see about settings.

dollymoo · 26/01/2021 20:38

No it's a blue tooth thing also so could be on their own data

DuzzyFuck · 26/01/2021 20:39

I wouldn't be freaked out OP. It happens all the time on the smart TV in our office boardroom when someone in the office tries to sneakily watch something on their phone and it automatically tries to mirror it.

Funnily enough has never happened when one particular workshy colleague has been in the meeting room without access to his phone Hmm

Could be a pop-up on a device being used in the house, or someone passing by.

Mum198000 · 26/01/2021 20:43

That’s reassuring thank you.

This is the new version of other people remotes turning over your tv. Happened all the time in my old house! Inconvenient maybe, but not anything I would worry about.

Mum198000 · 26/01/2021 20:44

Though it must be a very strong Bluetooth as our house is far away from neighbours and it’s pushing down so no dog walkers etc.

Mum198000 · 26/01/2021 20:44

Pushing? Ffs autocorrect! Pissing down.

We had this the other day! Our tv asks whether you want to allow access so I was able to deny access - no idea what they where going to stream to my TV ! I guess though it may have been a neighbour accidentally? We could then block it in settings.

chickychicchic · 26/01/2021 20:47

Maybe reset your tv and change wifi password to put ur mind at ease? Would freak me too

AlternativePerspective · 26/01/2021 20:47

I’ve had this to my phone. Airdrop request rapidly disappeared so I’m guessing that the person realised and cancelled it quickly 😂

HikeForward · 26/01/2021 20:48

I assume you changed your WiFi password when first got it?

Mum198000 · 26/01/2021 20:49

No we use the password on the back of the router. Didn’t know you could change it.

Wasn’t even porn, but something worse-a Trump rally!

Happened in our house once, I didn't even know you could do it until then.
Was the students next door, their phone picked up our TV, and she tried to turn the icon off but pressed the wrong button.
I was chuffed as I had no idea our telly could do that

Mum198000 · 26/01/2021 20:56

Glad it’s not unusual as I was worried.

My neighbour does this accidentally. Nothing sinister.

Mum198000 · 26/01/2021 21:04

Feeling better about it now. Thanks.
