Ah-Cass or YOU-Cass? (UCAS)

VinterKvinna · 25/01/2021 17:17

DH and I disagree with the pronunciation of UCAS.

He says its AhCass, and I say its YOUCass, - his reference is from 30 odd years ago.

YABU - Ahcass
YANBU - YOUCass

Oh gosh I'm still calling it uh-cass! I had no idea I was showing my age!!
Ah-cass is just wrong

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 25/01/2021 17:28

I definitely remember UCCA, or uhkah. But that was quite a long time ago Wink

RichardMarxisinnocent · 25/01/2021 17:28

As someone from the days of UCCA and PCAS I would have wanted to say uh-CAS, as a combination of uh-ca and pee-cas, but if they themselves say You-cas then that I am obviously very wrong and very old.

CremeEggThief · 25/01/2021 17:29

Our career guidance teacher in Ireland in the 90s called it U (as in the phoneme)/CAS. Do you think your DH is thinking along those lines, but it's a different pronunciation in his accent?

nokidshere · 25/01/2021 18:32

Are you sure he's not mixing it up with ACAS?

Kolo · 25/01/2021 18:38

I can't help saying uh-kas because I was so used to saying uh-ka and pee-kas back in the day, so now it's an amalgamation - uh-kas.

Was that actually 30 years ago??

MrsHusky · 25/01/2021 18:43

UCAS is definitely You-Cass

Spaceprincess · 25/01/2021 18:44

It's definitely You -Cass. Worked for a university for a few years and everyone calls it that...

SueEllenMishke · 25/01/2021 18:53

It's definitely YOUcas.

I've worked with them for years. That's how they ( and everyone in HE) refers to them.

TeenPlusTwenties · 25/01/2021 18:59

As everyone else says.
30 years ago or so it was an 'ucker form', but now it is U-cas

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 25/01/2021 19:02

ACAS are called aa-cass

bitheby · 25/01/2021 19:03

@AccidentallyRunToWindsor

ACAS are called aa-cass
I've only ever heard it called A (eh) cas.
Witchend · 25/01/2021 19:07

I was the first year of ucas, and we did pronounce it uh-cas because it came from ucca and pcas. (I think). However it is you-cas now.

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 25/01/2021 19:07

@bitheby maybe it's how I am typing it! I've only ever heard it said as A-cass but I guess how folk pronounce A is going to change isn't it which doesn't help

Only ever heard it your way, I don’t even know where he’s getting “ah” from? “Uh” would at least make sense although still not be how anyone else pronounced it

LindaEllen · 25/01/2021 19:11

@iklboo

Is he mixing it up with ACAS? Which is Ay-CAS.

How does he pronounce University if he thinks UCAS is Ah-CASS?

Ahniversity haha
Cuntitinthebin · 25/01/2021 19:11

My friend worked there.

It's You-Cass

Emmelina · 25/01/2021 19:13

It’s you-cass.

PlinkPlink · 25/01/2021 19:13

Definitely YOU-cas... as pronounced by all of my 6th form teachers back in the day 😂😂

saraclara · 25/01/2021 19:15

Yeah. He's got muddled up with UCCA. It's You-cass.

SarahBellam · 25/01/2021 19:17

Depends, is he talking about the UK university admissions system (you-cass) or is he talking about an employment policy and advice organisation (ay-cass)? If he’s talking about the latter he’s spelt it wrong 🤪
