Colleague won’t supervise classes

ConsuelaHammock · 24/01/2021 19:34

I work in a primary school . One of the teachers won’t come in to supervise key workers’ children. Most of the staff are in one day a week atm with smt being in 2 days .
The teacher in question thinks they had covid last Easter. There is no record of a positive test This colleague has mentioned that their gp has recommended they “work from home if possible”.
as they felt a little tired over the Christmas break . Aibu to think that they are taking the piss?
Colleague has form for taking off with the slightest sniffle .

Teacher: I'm not coming in. I can't .
Head: why's that?
Teacher: I just don't wanna .
Head: oh ok then, we'll give you full pay too.

Do you seriously think thats what happened? Or maybe that the head is so oblivious she hasn't even realised he's not in?

To be at home ,on full pay first he needs approval and second it needs to be for a reason.

You have no idea if he's ill with something else.
You have no idea if his mental health took a turn for the worse.
You have no idea if his partner or child are CEV.
You have no idea if his partner or children are very ill.
You have no idea if he's not being paid. We had the option to stay home in June ,but unless CV or CEV it would've been unpaid.

Also, he is coming in one day a week to do home packs. Just because he's not having contact with children doesn't mean he's not in and working.

If you have such little faith in your head maybe it's time to find another school.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 24/01/2021 21:32

@ConsuelaHammock

Sunflowers - colleague is not shielding . They were working from sept - Dec so I doubt they have long covid .
I'm aware of that. My point is, anyone of any age to can be vulnerable to COVID, be they 5, 25 or 55.

You also have no idea what health issues - mental or physical - he might have, and it's not your job to speculate. If you're struggling, then address that with your boss, but don't use his situation as an excuse to bitch and moan.

mineofuselessinformation · 24/01/2021 21:32

@ConsuelaHammock, you're starting to sound very silly now....

handsforfeet · 24/01/2021 21:36

This pandemic has highlighted inequality everywhere and that combined with fear and fatigue has led to a lot of resentment.

I work in the NHS and there has been similar issues, staff feeling others aren't pulling their weight, some shielding due to fear, recurrent isolations at home etc. It's so hard.

I would mention to the headteacher that there is this feeling in the staff room, then they can address it either with the individual or with the sentiment in the staff. The longer the resentment is allowed to fester the worse it gets.

Then let it wash over you. Honestly, there are people everywhere who get (or appear to) an easier ride but focussing on it will just make you more angry and only you lose.

And feel grateful you're not married to a shirker!

GoodbyeToCare · 24/01/2021 21:36

I have to do 2.5 days a fortnight in our hub and I resent it. However, I do it because I'm part of a larger team and realise that I have to take my turn. I'm sure my colleagues feel much the same as me but we just get on with it.

Your colleague must have a genuine reason to be allowed not to come in.

Yesmate · 24/01/2021 21:39

How about you leave it to the head. There may well be things you know nothing about

ConsuelaHammock · 24/01/2021 21:40

I’m - it’s my business because as the number of children needing a school place continue to rise, I will be in school more often . I don’t have a problem with doing my job . I do have a problem with doing someone else’s too .

OP posts:
donquixotedelamancha · 24/01/2021 21:41

this colleague has always been quite workshy, does the bare minimum and regularly leaves school before 4pm.

He'll be paid until 3.30, so what you mean is 'regularly does unpaid overtime'.

If you are not trolling everyone then you are quite unpleasant.

lyralalala · 24/01/2021 21:41
@lyralalala it's not difficult to see what's going in here is it?
It's the typical 'light the blue touch paper then retire' kind of thread.....
Exactly. They’ve not replied to one suggestion of minding their own business

Subtle teacher bashing thread, but yet another one

ConsuelaHammock · 24/01/2021 21:42

Mine - likewise !

@lyralalala 👍🏻 and Daffodil

donquixotedelamancha · 24/01/2021 21:43

as the number of children needing a school place continue to rise, I will be in school more often

So you are being paid full time but working part time?

Your complaint is that if this colleague doesn't do two days in school then two extra days work at night you might you might need to work more?

Holy fuck.

mineofuselessinformation · 24/01/2021 21:44

@ConsuelaHammock how so?
I'm happy to discuss.

ConsuelaHammock · 24/01/2021 21:44

I have agreed several times that’s its not my business . Unless it affects me !

OP posts:
mineofuselessinformation · 24/01/2021 21:45

@ConsuelaHammock, actually, as you should know, and I've mentioned previously, even if it does affect you, that doesn't mean you will be privy to information that is confidential.
But, surely you should know that?

lyralalala · 24/01/2021 21:45

@ConsuelaHammock

I’m - it’s my business because as the number of children needing a school place continue to rise, I will be in school more often . I don’t have a problem with doing my job . I do have a problem with doing someone else’s too .
If you have a problem then, as your colleague has done, speak to your head.

Don’t expect them to respond favourably to “wah wah unfair” though. And that’s all your argument is so far. Even though you have zero idea why your colleague is not taking classes right now.

Hopefully your head is a decent one who’ll point out that your colleagues private circumstances are fuck all to do with you and it’ll alert them to the fact you are clearly the shit-stirrer in your school

I'm in school every day. Maybe you're lazy and a shirker too.Grin
ConsuelaHammock · 24/01/2021 21:47

I don’t work full time. I work from home the days I’m not in school .
Don - ? I don’t understand your question ?
Mine - I have no idea why you’re talking about !

OP posts:
mineofuselessinformation · 24/01/2021 21:47
Hmm
lyralalala · 24/01/2021 21:48

@ConsuelaHammock

I have agreed several times that’s its not my business . Unless it affects me !
It doesn’t affect you.

If staffing levels affect you speak to your manager about your job.

Your colleagues roles are fuck all to do with you. The reasons for his non class facing are no more your business at the moment than they would be if he had cancer, pancreatitis, vertigo, was hit by a bus, depression or anything else.

You are neither his GP nor his manager so you have no idea why he is doing the job he’s doing how.

If you can’t cope then you deal with you. Leave his private business alone

ConsuelaHammock · 24/01/2021 21:48

Maybe I am!

OP posts:
mineofuselessinformation · 24/01/2021 21:50

OP, you sound an absolute delight.

lyralalala · 24/01/2021 21:50

@ConsuelaHammock

Maybe I am!
If you were his GP then you wouldn’t be working in a school, so it would be a blatant teacher bashing thread

If you were his manager you’d know the actual reasons and you wouldn’t be whining about him as a colleague

ConsuelaHammock · 24/01/2021 21:53

So you all think it’s ok not to go to work when you don’t actually have a sick line ? If you’re sick you’re sick , if you’re not then you do the same job as everyone else in the same position. The public sector really does carry a lot of dead weight .

OP posts:
mineofuselessinformation · 24/01/2021 21:54

Agreed.....
Look in the mirror.
