To think fuck it with housework

Just now DH is working full time, I’m working what is supposed to be 30 hours a week but ended up having to work 40 hours with work being busy. We are also homeschooling our 5 year old. He demands 100% attention (thankfully my friend takes him a couple of times a week for a few hours)

Came down this morning and just noticed that the house is an absolute shambles. We normally have a cleaner, but they’ve not been for ages because of lockdown.

DH and I spent an hour each cleaning the bathrooms, kitchen, changing bedding, doing washing etc but the bedrooms are still an absolute riot, clothes are still piled up, and the pile of ironing is still growing.

Aibu to think “fuck it” and just go out for a woodland walk anyway, and get delicious cake on the way home to cosy on the sofa with and watch a film? Tell me we’re not the only lazy so and so’s

I say go for it. I've been contemplating the same to be honest. I'm sick of spending my weekend cleaning. My DP is a key worker, I'm WFH FT and I have 2 DC's at home, aged 3 and 8 so I feel your pain. Put your feet up, that's my plan after spending the morning changing beds and cleaning the bedrooms!

Sbowiegirl · 24/01/2021 13:08

2 at home and you’re wfh on you’re own? Oh my, I’d be tearing my hair out

Go for it - you have done an hour each so it probably isn't that bad. No one is coming in your house anyway!

I do find the house gets so much more messier and dirtier with everyone being here all the time. I can't let it bother me, there is enough to do as it is.

I have worked out the things that annoy me most- dirty sink, dirty washbasin and loo, the hall carpet from muddy walks etc and I just keep on top of those.
Washing I do a load a day and iron when I am watching TV (I quite like ironing though) - I am grateful that DH no longer wears a shirt every day as he is WFH. Put clothes away when DC are in the bath.

Still have to do a blitz at the weekend though but we try to limit it to an hour though.

unkindnessofravens · 24/01/2021 13:10

Yeah, it's been fun and by fun I mean absolutely hellish! Grin

Thankfully the living room is lovely and clean and tidy. We keep it like that so we have somewhere nice to sit. The playroom is also wild, but we just close the door on it at night.

Anyone coming to the door must think we are living in a doss house. There are letters and parcels and goodness knows what lying about there, and shoes all over the place and jackets piled up.

@Fleurchamp. Yeah, normally we’re out of the house all week, so it doesn’t get that bad . And then the cleaner comes and cleans the bathrooms and kitchen. On my day off I normally would have batches cooked, ironed and tidied the other rooms. But it’s all gone to shit during Covid. Well, at least no one is coming in the house to see it

I haven't used an iron in over 5 years.

Biscuits101 · 24/01/2021 13:16

Ditch the ironing, no one is going anywhere for people to see their crumpled clothes!

HintOfVintagePink · 24/01/2021 13:33

Clean toilets and sinks just to keep hygienic. Ditch the rest for sure and get out there and enjoy the afternoon!

I usually spend 3-4 hours on a Sunday having a tidy and clean. Today we’re watching movies together on the sofa. My family don’t care if the cushion covers are washed or the letterbox is polished. Grin

HintOfVintagePink · 24/01/2021 13:34

And the first YABU voter has better be sitting in a pristine house with an empty laundry basket and next weeks meals batch prepped!

Sbowiegirl · 24/01/2021 13:42

@HintOfVintagePink the first one who clicked Yabu probably isn’t balancing work and childcare all at the same time (or has a wifey at home doing it all for them).

I love a clean house and with caring for my disabled dd and working as a Care assistant with long shift I manage fine. But sod it at times and have fun. Life is to short to worry at times.

ComDummings · 24/01/2021 13:43

Housework can wait. Although sometimes I feel like going ‘screw it!’ and leaving it but I always feel much calmer and happier once it looks tidy

HauntedPencil · 24/01/2021 13:43

Something has to slip - as long as it's not unhygienic I'd go easy on it.

I'm planNnig to have a big session the first day they go back - whenever that may be!

@Sbowiegirl or is just a dick!! Enjoy your walk

CSIblonde · 24/01/2021 13:46

Whatever works for you! I couldn't do an hour solid cleaning like most people I know (attention span of a gnat) so I do 5min bits as I go along ,like hoover during ad breaks , clean surfaces while the kettle boils etc & it stays pretty ok.

LuaDipa · 24/01/2021 14:01

I do an hour everyday and make the kids do something also, but standards have definitely slipped. It was really bothering me but I’m at the stage of accepting the things I can’t change. Enjoy your walk and forget it, honestly.

hibbledibble · 24/01/2021 14:05

Who irons in lockdown?! Or ever for that matter. I'm not sure where my iron is. It certainly hasn't seen the light of day for years.

Nocaloriesinchocolate · 24/01/2021 14:09

Don't confuse cleanliness for hygiene's sake and tidiness. Clean bathroom and kitchen and loos - definitely. The rest - forget it!

PattyPan · 24/01/2021 14:17

Yanbu. Don’t bother with ironing! I never iron anything, one thing off the list immediately Smile

snugglepuff · 24/01/2021 14:21

Yanbu
I've tried so hard to stay on top of everything but it's so hard.
Enjoy your outing, and your cake. And pay no attention to these fuckers who are sitting in a pristine home without a speck of dust in sight.
The whole Instagram/ Mrs Hinch phenomenon has a lot to answer for!

Pebbledashery · 24/01/2021 14:23

My house is spotless... But i draw the line at ironing 🤣.. Such a waste of time. Why would you😊

HorseOfPhillipMoss · 24/01/2021 14:27

Where do all the bits come from? Pre DS I used to hoover once a week, twice at a push and the floor was always clean, now it feels like the shark is a member of the family and there are still always bits on the floor!! I've just given the bathroom a ten minute wipe over and I'm off for a bath, DS is helping DH do some laundry.... Last time i found a Duplo helicopter in with my pants. We're both working full time, mainly out of the house, but DS is being looked after at home by my mum, as long as we don't get rodents I'm fine with it and if it's too bad I get home from work and DM has wiped over the kitchen and put a wash on 😁

RainyDay2020 · 24/01/2021 14:27

I cleaned the bathrooms this morning and sorted the washing. Really need to dust/hoover but fuck it I’m going for a long walk ON MY OWN!!
Working from home all week, long stressful hours with both kids homeschooling so don’t get a second to myself all week, I need just half hour stomping along the muddy path to get my sanity back a bit ready for next week.
