Child with SEN not in school

A good friend of mine has a child with with newly diagnosed dyslexia and autistic.

She is a SAHM and husband isn’t a keyworker. Her Dd is only 6 and struggling with all the online work, none of it is differentiated for her and her Dd is crying every day at home. Her Dd hasn’t been asked into school and friend has accepted this because she said she felt mustn’t be entitled. My friend worries about upsetting the teacher by asking.

The strange thing is that some of the keyworker children at school seem less entitled than my friends Dd. In many situations the parent is able to work from home, some are SAHM with a keyworker husband.

AIBU to ask my friend to push for a place at school for her Dd considering her barrier to learning?

Does the child have an EHCP?

But yes I agree. I’m struggling beyond belief with autistic DS. He has been given 2 days a week which I am very grateful for but some children have been given 5. Fair enough if both parents were critical workers but in some cases only one parent is and the other is at home all day and they are in 5 days a week.

My partner is also a keyworker.

It seemed to be first come first serve at DC’s school. Key workers were given choice first and allowed to have 5 days even if one parent was at home. It left very little capacity for vulnerable children. Children with sen are being given 1-2 days if they are lucky. Sucks!

What some posters seem to have forgotten is that this is not about the SAHP – this is about the child. The child as an EHCP – as far as I’m aware, DC one are entitled to go into school. My son has an EHCP and is in school. I am a SAHP… He was so distressed during the first lockdown that we had to ask the school to take him back. I was quite prepared to keep him at home, but his mental health suffered so badly that we requested an early return. He hasn’t actually completely recovered, either. We are still having issues to this day. We had to really push our case to get him back into school at half term in May… Your friend needs to do the same. Push, push, push.

@MissMarpleDarling

YABU OP she is stay at home mum why would she send her in.
Clearly you have no idea what it’s like to raise a child with sen during a pandemic stay at home mum or working mum. It’s so bleddy hard!

That’s not always true. I mean yes, it can be hard having a child at home who needs schooling but that’s true SEN or not. My SEN child (autism) is so much better at home than my non SEN. Regardless of having an EHCP or not, all children are still individuals with different needs to meet.
