It’s me or the dog

Okay, not literally but

DP moved in a few months ago and along with him came his dog. Now I’ve fallen in love with her and happily take her for walks, cook her dinner etc and take an active role in sharing ownership of the dog.

But every time DP comes home or walks into a room where me and the dog are (she already prefers me haha) he greets the dog first. Every time. Or it’s ‘hi baby/beautiful/etc’ to the dog and just a hi to me after. I don’t know why lately it’s just getting beyond on my nerves.

Thing that prompted this thread is just now I was lying in bed (don’t judge, it’s lockdown and I’m furloughed. There’s nothing to do) with the dog and he says he’s going the shops. Walks to dog, cuddles/kisses goodbye and then just says bye to me.

Argh it’s so trivial but I’m literally getting jealous the attention the dog gets more than me. Feel free to tell me to get over myself or join me in being outraged.

Grin

Grin love this thread. Animals always get the most attention in this house!

StillMedusa · 23/01/2021 15:26

'I love you sooooo much' ..commonly heard from either of us...
to the dog Grin
To be fair ..I don't greet DH with anything like the enthusiasm the dog does, nor the other way round.. the dog is ecstatic when we come home and so is greeted accordingly!
My previous cat was equally adored. It's just a love thing...

hiredandsqueak · 23/01/2021 15:29

Completely normal, everyone here speaks to and fusses the dog before acknowledging the presence of another human. Exh turns up to pick up ds and it's his dog who gets fussed over even if they haven't seen their dad for a week.

Santaiscovidfree · 23/01/2021 15:31

Ddog had stitches and The Cone of Shame.. Dh 6'4 slept on our 2 seater sofa when ddog decided recovery included sleeping next to my head.
On dh's pillow...

MsVestibule · 23/01/2021 15:35

Me, when I come in from work:

To dog: How's my beautiful boy? Have you missed me? Has Daddy been neglecting you again? What a beautiful furry face you have. You are such a handsome boy. Yes you are. You really are.

To DH: You need a shave. Shall I put the kettle on?

DH knows I still love him more than the dog.

PumpkinsandAutumnLeaves · 23/01/2021 15:41

Absolutely normal. Our ddog knows she is the princess of the house and us commoners are lucky to be allowed to worship her

Are you me Grin this is exactly how it rolls in our house too Grin

doodleygirl · 23/01/2021 15:42

Totally normal in my house, in the days we were allowed visitors they would always greet and cuddle the dog before the hoomans. My girl is particularly gorgeous Grin

VettiyaIruken · 23/01/2021 15:47

On our 22nd wedding anniversary my husband abandoned me to go play hide and seek with the cat who was jealous we were hanging out together.

Get used to it. 🤣

Bangable · 23/01/2021 15:52

@Gobbeldegook

Jeez you dog owners are batshit. Last thing I want is to get covered in dog hair or dog stink before I go out Confused
My dogs don't shed and definitely don't smell Confused
SonjaMorgan · 23/01/2021 15:53

I will greet my husband first when he gets as excited to see me as my dog does.

Love this. My cats definitely get more cuddles and soppiness than DH. But they also give me more than he does!
Trivialpursuitofhappiness · 23/01/2021 16:10

@suspiria777

cook her dinner

You what?
What on earth.

Grin She’s intolerant to literally everything so we feed her just chicken. It’s cheaper to buy the bags of sliced chicken that’s kept in the freezer so I have to put it in the oven for each meal to defrost Blush

I'm starting to think this is why my DH won't let me have another dog...

Stellaris22 · 23/01/2021 16:25

I think it's why I'm not allowed another dog too!

DH regularly complains dog gets more attention (which is true).

Branleuse · 23/01/2021 16:47

my dp definitely prefers the dogs to any of the rest of us. He finds them completely charming and delightful. He does love the rest of us, but I actually think its quite cute. Hes only really properly happy if there are dogs around.
If hes neglecting you, then thats another story

Gobbeldegook · 23/01/2021 17:20

@Bangable dog owners never can smell their dogs. But every 'doggy' house I have been in their dogs have that distinctly doggy smell. It's the same with cats. Pretty much all pets really. I had dogs as a kid and never noticed it, but after I left home it was like I got a whole new nose 🤣

redistributingU · 23/01/2021 17:25

When I was 18 my then bf had a ‘beloved’ pet
He didn’t look after it properly, worked long hours and left me to it. I tried. Was too hard. I kept telling him I couldn’t do it and if he didn’t take care of his own animal I’d get it rehomed he ignored me repeatedly despite my mh deteriorating so I got it rehomed when he was at work one day

I've read that so many times on MN but it's just not true. True, labs and other shedding dogs do have a doggy odour, but mine are non shedding and they really do not smell, at all.

We had dogs all my life, labs, Jack Russells, hunting dogs. My mother hasn't owned a dog for years and won't have any more 'because they smell'. She also has a dog-like sense of smell. She has confirmed that my house does not smell of dogs at all. That's enough for me. My house categorically does not smell of dog.

isseys4xmastinselcats · 23/01/2021 17:34

my OH is resigned to the fact i say hello to the cats first then him

DPotter · 23/01/2021 18:10

I stand corrected!

Butchyrestingface · 23/01/2021 18:24

I do this with DP (Dear Parrot). And I can't even blame it on a significantly reduced lifespan because those wee bastards tend to live forever.

I also slept on the sofa many years ago so the sick budgie could have full use of the double bed (he had the snuffles). Hell would freeze over before I'd do that for a mere man. 🙄

Serin · 23/01/2021 18:31

RedistributingU Good God
You really got rid of his dog like that? I have no words.

Cluelessbeetroot · 23/01/2021 18:38

When DP tells me he loves me, I respond I love you too, nearly almost as much as I love the dog. DP is very happy with what he sees as a perfectly reasonable reply. He even goes Ahhhh and then strokes, kisses or generally finds a way to pester said dog.
HTH

It was a cat. And yes I did. I repeatedly asked (and begged) for him to step up and look after it. I was allergic and had 2 dc. It was an elderly cat and stayed indoors. Threw up a lot and had accidents. I must have asked him daily for about 7 months then I warned him repeatedly what I was planning to do and he continued to ignore me so yes I got his pet rehomed
