To adopt a dog with the same name as my son

I have seen a beautiful rescue dog on the RSPCA looking for a home. I think we're the perfect home for him but his name is the same as my 9yo DS. DH thinks this rules the dog out completely as it would be confusing. I think he's being ridiculous and DS is old enough to understand - we haven't asked his opinion yet as he'll be bouncing off the walls at the prospect as soon as we mention it and it's all very much prospective at the minute. DS doesn't have a nickname or anything we could shorten to and the dog is 3 years old so probably couldn't change his name!
YABU - you can't have a dog with the same name as your son
YANBU - your husband is being silly

God yes! It would make life so much easier when You take them out to the park or call them in for their dinner. Just one name to call, unless you teach your son to respond to a whistle!

Dragongirl10 · 22/01/2021 23:49

That is the perfect situation op, l regularly call my dcs by the dogs name, (occasionally even the pygmy goats name )
sometimes l call my DH the dogs name, .........

Having Ds and Ddog with the same name will be fine!

OwlLovesTea · 22/01/2021 23:49

Is it Max?
Call the dog Rex.

KaptainKaveman · 22/01/2021 23:51

Just make sure your dh doesn't start shitting on the front lawn and cocking his leg against trees.

I’d go for it! As others have said it’s easy to rename a dog.

Our dog has a girls name but is called BooBoo and puppy (she’s 8 so no puppy!) just as often. In fact I’ve often felt that if we called anything in a pleasant tone she’d come.

anappleadaykeepsthedoctoraway · 22/01/2021 23:56

Total non issue.

We took on a rescue when my daughter (Ellie) was 7.

Dog was also called Ellie. We took her on a walk and tried out a variety of names which a similar cadence (Lily, Millie, Meggy etc).

Dog is now called Molly and she suits it more than her original name.

My grandparents inherited a dog that was named after my grandad. Highly amusing to everyone except my grandparents when my gran yelled the name and both turned up.
My sister in law decided it was an awesome idea to call her 1st child the same as my mother's dog. The dog came first. I never did understand that. The child is now trans so it's no longer an issue.

VetiverAndLavender · 23/01/2021 00:01

Glad to see that everyone's saying what I came to say. Wink Dogs really don't care what you call them, and they'll easily adapt to a new name. It won't take long for him to learn, especially if you use a special tone of voice when calling him by his new name. He'll respond to the tone as much as the sound of the name.

(I call my dogs by so many nicknames! They happily answer to almost anything. Grin )

BoJoHoNo · 23/01/2021 00:03

Dogs are pretty adaptable. You could probably call them something daft/rude in a bright tone of voice and they wouldn't care. Our rescue was originally named Jason and the lady at the rescue centre referred to him as 'Jasey Juicehead'. The first thing DP said to him as he came home was 'don't worry mate, you're getting a less ridiculous name!' Grin

Wheresmykimchi · 23/01/2021 00:06

The dog will answer if you use the same tone wth a variation.

Mine answers to all sorts of funny words that sound like his name.

MarleyTheDog · 23/01/2021 00:10

I agree with everyone else. Just change the dogs name. Our rescue was called Ben (as was my nephew). We renamed him Marley. I sat with him, said Marley - many times over a few days - as soon as he looked at me I gave him a treat. He responds to Marley no problem. Your dilemma is a non issue OP.

ChristmasSexyTime · 23/01/2021 00:12

I don't know if this has been mentioned because I haven't read every response but my dog has loaaaaads of nicknames. And he responds to them all.

They're clever cookies dogs. You can give them multiple names and they still understand they are being spoken to.

Adopt the dog change its name

We did with ours. A bit of hotdog every time you call it. Name changed in a dayGrin

jamesfailedmarshmallows · 23/01/2021 00:16

I know someone who gave their dog the same name as their child Hmm They differentiated between the two at home by calling the girl Penny and the dog Penny Puppy. It seemed to work OK.

MisterT373 · 23/01/2021 00:17

He will be so happy to be rehomed he won't care what you call him.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 23/01/2021 00:33

We changed our rescue cat’s name to something that had similar-ish sounds, but we thought much nicer. Think Dasher to Daphne. We used the name all the time we spoke to her to begin with, and by the time we started letting her out she came in to it no bother. She also responds to Lady Miaowington, Bobbin, Bob, Pops, Monkey, Pesty-McPestface, Purrzy, and Cattington.
