To adopt a dog with the same name as my son

I have seen a beautiful rescue dog on the RSPCA looking for a home. I think we're the perfect home for him but his name is the same as my 9yo DS. DH thinks this rules the dog out completely as it would be confusing. I think he's being ridiculous and DS is old enough to understand - we haven't asked his opinion yet as he'll be bouncing off the walls at the prospect as soon as we mention it and it's all very much prospective at the minute. DS doesn't have a nickname or anything we could shorten to and the dog is 3 years old so probably couldn't change his name!
YABU - you can't have a dog with the same name as your son
YANBU - your husband is being silly

Our dog had two lots of paperwork in rescue. On one he was called Pepe, on another he was Jack. We gave him a different name. He learned a lot over fast, including his name.
Choose something original like Fido or Rover, a proper dog name!

Couchpotato3 · 22/01/2021 11:49

Does your son have a middle name? You could assign the dog a middle name that he uses instead of his first name (in case your son is upset at the thought of dog losing 'his' name).

ScribblingPixie · 22/01/2021 11:49

We renamed our rescue dog as it was called Tyson (sigh) - we just picked a name that had some of the same sounds so the dog didn't get confused.

Rainbowandscarlett · 22/01/2021 11:51

My friends dog was called ‘Trevor’ when they adopted him (we don’t know his ‘birth’ name as he was rescued)
He’s now a ziggy and he knows his name-usually when I call him,he knows there’s a fuss/tennis ball/treat coming his way
I don’t think it even entered their heads to keep calling him Trevor

Halfwreckedbykids · 22/01/2021 11:52

We ve our dog since she was 12 weeks..we have LOADS of pet names/nicknames gor her and she knows them all.
Its a sign go for it

TheNorthWind · 22/01/2021 11:54

My dog was a rescue. We changed her name immediately. It's never been a thing.

She also thinks she's called Good Girl. And Oi.

The name is pretty much irrelevant in the list of dog considerations.

NotJust3SmallWords · 22/01/2021 11:56

Go for it! The dog will learn a new name quickly.

As a pp said it's basically just another voice cue to the dog (he won't have a deep emotional connection to it Grin) and most dogs can learn new commands/voice cues pretty easily with a bit of consistent work.

thereisonlyoneofme · 22/01/2021 11:59

My rescue dog was given his name by the rescue when he came in, we changed it immediately and it didnt take long for him to respond.
Changed the rescue bitches name slightly to.
As someone said you m,ight not use that name anyway, all our dogs responded to nicknames as well, first one was called O' Mally, but responded to Biggles !

countrygirl99 · 22/01/2021 11:59

We did at the end of October. We changed his name (dog not son) and he is happy.

lynsey91 · 22/01/2021 12:02

Just rename the dog. A lot of people who get rescue dogs rename them. We renamed ours although he was only 7 months.

Dogs are pretty intelligent and can easily learn a new name. I call my dog by pet names as well as his proper name and he responds to them all

Good point. My dog also responds to "mate", "buddy", "hey", "what you doing?", "ok" and a high pitched noise, among other things Grin it's just a way to signal to your dog that you want their attention or want them to come to you.
onetwothreeonetwothree · 22/01/2021 12:05

A resounding yes then! I'd no idea you could change a dog's name, it's never occurred to me. Decision made, hubby can lump it Grin

As far as I know most rescues rename they dogs when they arrive. Our dog mainly responds to someone opening the kitchen door/the fridge/a crisp packet so doesn’t really matter what she’s called!

Butchyrestingface · 22/01/2021 12:10

Do it. Rename your son and consign your husband to the kennel.

4cats2kids · 22/01/2021 12:12

Don’t do it. Your son might get confused and start shitting in the garden.

Thelnebriati · 22/01/2021 12:13

Use his new name first followed by the old name, eventually he will start reacting when you use the new name. (It will be faster if you call him for dinner).
Then you can drop the old name off the end. He'll soon forget it.

NeverSurrender · 22/01/2021 12:14

We renamed our rescue, used a name with the same amount of syllables - He picked it up really quickly.

Jaffapaffa · 22/01/2021 12:20

I inadvertently gave our dog the same name as DH, albeit in a different language. They both seem fine with it, and both respond when I shout 😊.

RuthW · 22/01/2021 12:21

Just change the dog's name. We change our ex racing greyhounds names when we get them.

tttigress · 22/01/2021 12:27

Surely when you are talking to another human you could say "Tim the dog" or whatever, then when just talking to the dog you could say "Sit Tim"

tabulahrasa · 22/01/2021 12:31

The name probably isn’t his original one anyway, rescues quite often give them new ones.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 22/01/2021 12:34

@BillMasheen

Rename the child?
I was going to say that Grin
WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 22/01/2021 12:39

How much experience do you have with dogs?

Will they even rehome to you with a child?

Ivy455 · 22/01/2021 12:39

You can definitely rename the dog. I have renamed rescue animals including rats and they picked it up very quickly (rats are very smart!). My dogs respond to loads of random nicknames. My dog's name is Ollie but I also call him Panda Man and he responds to it.

Discoballs · 22/01/2021 12:40

My parents adopted a horse with the same name as me.
