AIBU?

But isn't this suspicious?

I live opposite a construction site for new flats and I've just been woken up around 03:44 by heavy construction machinery that sounded potentially like an excavator. I couldn't see clearly out the window as it's dark but just a bright light. But whatever machine it was it sounded like material was being moved around and possibly crushed.

Now I'm not sure if it's just the crime junkie in me but surely this is weird and suspicious? It can't have lasted more than 20 minutes but why an earth would you be using that machinery at this hour for a short space of time and then just leave? It's all quiet now..

Rules in the UK are Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm and Saturday 8am to 1pm for noisy work permitted.

AIBU to think that someone is possibly using their work machinery at this hour to hide something?

it does indeed sound suspicious

You should also call you local council and log the unnecessary disturbance, with either the building control or environmental health dept. Restrictions are put on building sites for a good reason and breaches should be officially logged so complaint case can be made if this becomes persistent.
Hopefully its only your crime mind going crazy, are there any boots or limbs poking out of newly laid concrete?

Could have been using it quickly on the site to finish a job then moving it elsewhere. It costs to hire these big machines. But if you didn't hear a large lorry driving off with it then that's not the answer.

@migmogmash I’ll blame it on 3am 😂

Of course it's suspicious.

Probably someone trying to steal plant.

That would be my thoughts.

I did window peer but saw no action and eventually went to sleep.

As for the police updating me on the matter; I'm not sure they will but I did leave my details.

This morning everything looks as normal as I can see. Workmen have arrived and I'm assuming work will resume.

Well done for reporting OP, I think it does sound suspicious and I would have done the same (but then, I watch a LOT of Scandi noir crime dramas Grin)

I work for a construction company and this absolutely would not be allowed so hopefully not.

I did think of The Killing and the building site in that.

Definitely hiding a body!!

So I spoke to the police via the live chat and they said that officers did attend but nothing appeared out of the ordinary at the time.

So I guess I'll leave it to being a strange one off incident.

I’d take a wander over to the site and mention it to the site manager.

But how would the police know if there was something out of the ordinary, unless they were familiar with how the site looked normally?

Kids farting around found an unsecured power tool & played with it at 4am.

Likely a body will be found in years to come..

The police would know if a gate was unlocked.

Why not wander over and ask to speak to the Forman and tell him about it, and ask if it was part of their planned works. If it was someone else mucking about with their machinery in the middle of the night, they would want to know. Or if there is a sign up telling you the name of the company, give them a call.

MotherOfDragonite · 21/01/2021 09:32

We have a building site near us and a lot of the construction company's heavy equipment was stolen in the middle of the night! So it could be theft.

Report
BarbaraofSeville · 21/01/2021 09:34

Likely it was someone trying to steal machinery or scrap metal, both of which are common on construction sites.

Definitely go and see if you can let them know if you heard a noise overnight. Maybe the intruders didn't leave obvious evidence that they'd been in.

The site will want to check their security. As well as wanting to protect their equipment, ridiculous as it sounds, if intruders come to harm while on site, the construction company could be liable.

Why don’t you tottle over there and speak to the site manager.
Then report back to us (just in case it was them burying the body of another interfering neighbour Grin)

Ah OP I wouldn’t be going over to talk to the foreman! This happens in books and shows - you’re a witness, don’t want to get bumped off if he is in on something dodgy! (Light hearted, kinda)

What stage is the site at? Are they still piling or laying foundations?
