I live opposite a construction site for new flats and I've just been woken up around 03:44 by heavy construction machinery that sounded potentially like an excavator. I couldn't see clearly out the window as it's dark but just a bright light. But whatever machine it was it sounded like material was being moved around and possibly crushed.

Now I'm not sure if it's just the crime junkie in me but surely this is weird and suspicious? It can't have lasted more than 20 minutes but why an earth would you be using that machinery at this hour for a short space of time and then just leave? It's all quiet now..

Rules in the UK are Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm and Saturday 8am to 1pm for noisy work permitted.

AIBU to think that someone is possibly using their work machinery at this hour to hide something?

PPs suggesting a body oh let's make the most amount of noise possible and alert the neighbourhood whilst we hide a body !
It's either kids messing about which is why it didn't last long and they likely scaled the hoarding, or some ppl trying to steal it and realised they couldn't get it out/off site - machinery is often 'parked' up by end of shift in a place where it can't be easily manoeuvred - i.e. other machinery blocks it in.
Re. police not seeing signs of anything untoward - they will have alerted the security company to accompany them, it's a building site, so police won't walk around it in the dark without assistance, that's highly dangerous. Security firm would've confirmed all access in good condition.

Anybody mishandling asbestos may not necessarily get away with it. It can catch up with them later.
