Men who lean to the left, middle or far left politics, are just as misogynistic as their counterparts who lean to the right...

YANBU - yes, they are as misogynistic
YABU - no, they are not

Men of any political leaning can be misogynists.

Didn't Dworkin say men of the right think women are private property. Men of the left think women are public property.

formerbabe · 20/01/2021 22:31

Yep...definitely. Why wouldn't they be?

My own politics are fairly centre...I go right if pushed but am a floating voter.

I dislike extreme politics.

I have noticed though on a personal level, left wing people are far nastier on a one to one basis than someone on the right (not fascist! Or extremely right wing). Just my observation.

AradiaGC · 20/01/2021 22:32

They absolutely can be.

The old line about right-wing men treating women like private property and left-wing men treating them like public property has some truth to it.

You only have to look at the utterly hideous things some of them say to women they disagree with online to see the misogyny beneath the 'progressive' veneer.

formerbabe · 20/01/2021 22:33

Sorry meant to say not everyone on the left is nasty obviously but on the whole I've found them more likely to be nastier than right wing people and far less tolerant of other people's opinions.

So yeah, no reason why they wouldn't be more misogynistic too.

UnityUnited · 20/01/2021 22:34

Based on my experience, yes.

SquishySquirmy · 20/01/2021 22:35

As a very general rule YANBU.
Of course, some men who lean to the left are not, and some men who lean to the right are not.

In general, I find the left/right thing a bit tricky, because you can lean to the right economically but agree with "the left" on certain social issues (and vice versa). So many issues can not be divided along left/right lines (despite many who claim that they can be).
I know a few people who would claim that, on any issue, the opposite opinion to their own is "right wing". Which is clearly a massive oversimplification.

Whatisthisfuckery · 20/01/2021 22:37

Lefty men are at least as misogynistic as their right wing counterparts, they’re generally just less honest about it. I’ve found that the more overtly woke the lefty man, the more likely he is to be a raging misogynist.

Yep

peachgreen · 20/01/2021 22:42

I have certainly witnessed misogyny from all sides of the political spectrum but in general I would say no, men on the left are less likely to be outright misogynists. That doesn't make them immune from perpetuating the patriarchy of course, nor does any self declaration of feminist allyship necessarily reflect in their unconscious behaviour and bias. But they are more likely to at least make an attempt to be feminist allies.

ArosGartref · 20/01/2021 22:43

As labour party member, I completely agree. They frame it differently but their actions/words are still too often rooted in misogyny.

Empressofthemundane · 20/01/2021 22:51

It seems counterintuitive, but in my personal life, the woke lefties have been far worse than old fashioned conservatives.

Dugee · 20/01/2021 23:00

This is very true these days. The conservatives used to be called conservatives because, on the whole, they wanted to conserve to status quo (of old Britain). Labour used to be the party of the workers. I don't know if this is age / demographic specific (early 40s big city based) but my Tory voting friends are what would be described as socially liberal. The friends I see vocally supporting labour on social media don't seem to be interested in the working class, in fact they are pretty disparaging towards the indigenous working class.

I too am centre, a typical floating voter. I couldn't vote labour last time due to the anti semitism, something that many labour supporters seemed happy to turn a blind eye too.

Sheleg · 20/01/2021 23:03

The only non misogynistic men I've ever met are members of the Communist Parry of Great Britain. It's also the only party that doesn't believe that trans women are women.

TheMarzipanDildo · 20/01/2021 23:05

“Men of the left think women are public property.”

Incidentally there’s a whole bit in the Communist Manifesto which takes great issue with this idea. The essence is that if women are equal human beings to men (which communism supposedly says they are) then it is not physically possible for them to be the property of anyone. So they suggest that the right wingers are projecting and then there’s a nice rant about the fact that women are already treated as property under capitalism (prostitution etc) which Marx thought was terrible. The Communists also wanted to ‘scrap’ the family and inheritance too largely on the basis that it exploits women’s reproductive capacities.

So that’s quite feminist. I’m not sure Marx practiced what he preached though! And I do think the modern left is riddled with sexism.

Stay123 · 20/01/2021 23:05

Only been out with one very left bloke who was horrible about women, serial shagger, judged them on looks, very sneaky, wanted women’s money. What is Matthew tickling you I did it that might know if it all the tickling to think

PicsInRed · 20/01/2021 23:08

Moreso. They feel entitled to be "rewarded" and feel "owed" by women for being such fantastic guys, if they do say so themselves.

This ^.

They also have more of an issue with women who are self-sufficient.

Dugee · 20/01/2021 23:10

Very true @PicsInRed

Absolutely. A lot of men use it a blatant seduction tool. A bit like being a "nice" guy (who therefore feels he's "owed" sex).

Mumisnotmyonlyname · 20/01/2021 23:51

Agree.

uglyswan · 20/01/2021 23:53

I have no idea what Engels was like to talk to, but as the author of "The Origin of the Family", he can't have been all bad:

"[...]a generation of men who never in their lives have known what it is to buy a woman’s surrender with money or any other social instrument of power; a generation of women who have never known what it is to give themselves to a man from any other considerations than real love or to refuse to give themselves to their lover from fear of the economic consequences."

sst1234 · 20/01/2021 23:56

Lefties have all the bad traits of right wingers plus hypocrisy.

bluecheesefan · 21/01/2021 00:08

When you have people with relatively extreme views on one topic, the chances are that they will hold strong views and opinions about many things. So there's a reasonable chance they'll be sexist twats.

TuxedoPuss · 21/01/2021 00:16

Sorry but I disagree, if the sentiment is genuine. The most informed man I know, who reads everything and happens to be extremely clever and would be considered left wing, is also very respectful of women (and me!)

I think the common thread is the ability to see things for what they are rather than what people are telling them. If a man is a right wing person it's going to be quite likely he's reading certain newspapers and hanging around with similar uninformed people - most of the population.

On the other hand, someone can choose a stance based on their desired "image", rather than true moral reasons. So it could go the other way.
