YANBU - yes, they are as misogynistic
YABU - no, they are not

Yeah, I would agree with that, though I don't find most men particularly misogynistic. I think sometimes when men are selfish dicks to women, that's the assumption, but really, they are just selfish dicks generally.

But yes - I used to work in a job with a lot of men who would not be considered "new men" and many leaned right. And I would say while they might be more likely to say women and men are different, and have more male-focused hobbies and social events, they actually were just as likely to like women and just accept them as themselves. And they were maybe more likely to be respectful of them.

ChestnutStuffing · 21/01/2021 03:11

I think the common thread is the ability to see things for what they are rather than what people are telling them. If a man is a right wing person it's going to be quite likely he's reading certain newspapers and hanging around with similar uninformed people - most of the population.

If you equate right wing with stupid, I suppose your conclusion might follow.

GodOfPhwoar · 21/01/2021 03:26

I don't think political leaning is a very effective method of predicting misogyny at all tbh. These things are far more likely to be inherited from a sexist father, or from a messy divorce/cheating spouse/etc where the guy develops a deep hatred of women, perhaps fuelled by oine groups (MRAs, incels, FFJ, etc).

GodOfPhwoar · 21/01/2021 03:29

I agree that on a personal level I've seen far more intolerance and general nastiness from the left.

I've definitely encountered a fair few 'I'm alright Jack' types from the right, but they often have a 'everybody for themselves' mentality and feel they've worked for what they have - which tbh they usually have (it's never the rich who want to redistribute wealth!).

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/01/2021 03:34

The right are sexist. The left are misogynist.

Frankly sexist is easier to deal with.

And after all the two female prime ministers have been Tories, which I don't think is a coincidence. Labour talk a good game but don't actually put women in charge.

Don't you just mean men in general as you appear to have covered all bases here?

drspouse · 21/01/2021 04:59

Right wing men have more of a tendency to be "benign sexists" i.e. Little Woman syndrome, don't you bother your pretty head, I'll take care of that. It can be harder to spot than "sex work is empowering" type left wing misogyny.

FlyNow · 21/01/2021 05:21

I disagree, I don't think they are quite as bad in general.

However one thing I've noticed is that some seem to think they can't be a misogynist because they are left wing, and don't need to examine their views/behaviour critically.

AnnabelleMarx · 21/01/2021 06:12

I think they’re worse.

Men on the right can accept a woman having a seat at the table if she fits certain stereotypes.

Men on the left can’t accept it at all.

In general, obviously.

PeggyHill · 21/01/2021 06:21

As others have said, some men are just misogynistic. It's shitty but I don't think it has much to do with which political party they vote for.

ClinkyMonkey · 21/01/2021 06:27

I don't think it's ever useful to generalise anyway. People, even menGrin, are rather more complex than that.

TheMarzipanDildo · 21/01/2021 07:11

The right wing men I know have been the types who watch “feminist fail” compilations on YouTube and were convinced that Judge Kavanaugh was being stitched up so I think it’s a myth that they are all the respectful kind of sexist.

Darklingthrush · 21/01/2021 07:18

Yes.

iVampire · 21/01/2021 07:22

I didn’t vote, because I think the left wing is usually considerably worse whilst being deeply in denial that it is at all.

Much in the same way that they are considerably more authoritarian

And in UK, WASP

Vieve1325 · 21/01/2021 07:24

I find the lefts are more likely to be a self certified ‘nice guy.’

You know the ones. Thinks they should be patted on the head for not raping everything in sight.

BigBadVoodooHat · 21/01/2021 07:26

Surely misogyny is far more likely to be inherited from the near-universal dominance of patriarchal societal structures than from one particular relative or set of individual circumstances?

peak2021 · 21/01/2021 07:26

If you look at the trade union movement in recent times, and some in the left of the Labour Party, then in the UK YANBU. Not sure about outside the UK though.

OhWhyNot · 21/01/2021 07:27

I think often they are maybe not so obvious as far right politics

I also think as many who vote labour are not only just as sexist but as racist/prejudice too than who vote Tory

QueenoftheAir · 21/01/2021 07:31

Lefty men are at least as misogynistic as their right wing counterparts, they’re generally just less honest about it. I’ve found that the more overtly woke the lefty man, the more likely he is to be a raging misogynist

That wasn’t experience in the beginnings of the Green movement in the late 1970s. Then I saw it in the Occupy movement in the early 2000s. No one talked much about the sexual assaults in those trendy lefty Occupy camps in NewYork and at St Paul’s ...

Aozora13 · 21/01/2021 07:41

Depressing but true. I work in international development with many a lefty man. Definitely NAMALT but there have been a few choice specimens who talk the talk about women’s empowerment but then are massive mansplainers and can’t handle women in authority. I also faced discrimination at work for not only being female but also being pregnant. Yay.

And whoever thinks communists aren’t misogynists, I dated one who couldn’t handle the fact I earned more than him, and stealthed me on more than one occasion.

Darklingthrush · 21/01/2021 07:57

Another thing that I have noticed as I am getting older is that some men who wouldn't dream of making sexist remarks about younger women, still see older women as fair game and take it for granted that it is ok to refer to them as if they are washed up, second-class citizens!

HitchFlix · 21/01/2021 07:58

That's not been my experience. I'm also a floating voter who'll veer right when pushed, but in terms of misogyny the men I know with the strongest sexist views/behavior are more likely to be on the right. A more accurate indicator is their family upbringing though, as opposed to their politics. In all the cases I'm thinking of their fathers were sexist twats and their mother was the subservient/dinner on the table type, browbeaten by their husbands or sometimes actually beaten.

Although now I've just thought of some left leaning misogynistic idiots I know too. Aghhh they're all shite really Grin

FOJN · 21/01/2021 08:02

In my experience right leaning men deny having any socially constructed advantage over women so they don't believe the patriarchy or male privilege exists and men on the left claim to be feminists which they think is sufficient qualification to speak for us.

You can debate a right wing misogynist. Left wing men act like you've hurt their feelings if you challenge them and it feels manipulative.

RomeoLikedCapuletGirls · 21/01/2021 08:10

“Men on the right can accept a woman having a seat at the table if she fits certain stereotypes.

Men on the left can’t accept it at all.”

I agree and I think that’s why traditionally, female heads of government have come from the right.

saraclara · 21/01/2021 08:24

So we're not just generalising a whole sex now, we're generalising whole sides of the political spectrum?

Isn't there enough division in the world right now? And of course pale are going to say that whichever side they don't belong to is the worst.

What a pointless and unpleasant thread. How to sow even more division.
