AIBU?

To go to a local garden centre?

I feel like I might get flamed for this. I'm on maternity leave and obviously we're in full lockdown. Where I live is also currently in the throes of Storm Christoph and the rain outside is literally like the wrath of god - so no chance of a walk. My baby is teething and really grumpy and I'm going out of my mind being stuck in the same four walls all day every day. All baby classes have been cancelled, can't even go somewhere for a quick coffee to break up the day. My husband is at work (he's a teacher and over half of the school are in because the government have massively expanded the list of what constitutes a 'key worker' - so it's not really a lockdown, but that's another thread!) We have a support bubble because we have a child under 1 but they're also at work in the week (also teachers). Our local garden centre (2 min drive away) is open - would I be unreasonable to pack the baby in the car and go and have a look round there for an hour? Just to break up the day and regain a bit of sanity? Not an essential journey, but arguably important for mental health! My husband now has weekly COVID tests - he had one yesterday and it was negative so it's highly unlikely we have it! Feel like I'm going mad!

By the way, who will look after your baby if you die of Covid?

If you're young enough to reproduce you're talking lottery-win odds of dying of covid.
@FlamedToACrisp

Except that of the 90,000 people who have died a negligible amount are / were of childbearing age with no health issues.

And no I’m not saying we shouldn’t be careful. I’m pointing out that HER risk of dying is negligible.

She of course may get sick or pass something on. But that’s not what you’ve said. You’ve said she’ll die because she’s gone to a garden centre.

More risk of being in a fatal RTA - but I guess you still get in a car or walk down a road pretty much daily?
Probably doesn’t get in a car or walk down the road - don’t you know that if you’ve left your house even once since last March you’re personally responsible for 25k deaths AT LEAST?! 😂

If its just to go out then yabu.

If youbare going to buy seed potatoes or onion sets for your allotment that would be different.

2. do not ever post on MN asking whether you should set foot out the door - it is full of complete lockdown lunatics. Most people in real life are slightly more measured.

It's literally within the rules OP. Go, wear a mask, and keep your brain sane and well. I know my MH is definitely taking a battering more this lockdown than the last so I can relate

Christ the covid police are out in force, again.

I would go, but browsing for an hour is pushing it. Have a look around, buy a nice plant and support a business which is probably struggling.

I'm going out of my mind being stuck in the same four walls all day every day.

You and everyone else OP. Or are you more special than my horribly lonely mum who hasn't seen her family for months? Or my depressed partner who lives on his own? Or my dad who hasn't seen any of his beloved grandchildren for nearly a year? They're making sacrifices because THERE'S A BLOODY PANDEMIC ON, and so those of us who do essential work can continue without being put at even more risk than we already are. There is nothing 'essential' about any of the tat in garden centres, and by driving there you're expecting breakdown people and paramedics to be on hand if anything goes wrong (highly unlikely, but more likely than if you stay at home), as well as expecting shop staff to be unnecessarily putting themselves in danger for you when they should have the option of staying safe.

I've been totally amazed during all of this that people can't seem to see the bigger picture here and that not everything the government says we CAN do SHOULD be done. Has our education system taught out the logical thinking abilities of an entire generation??

Short answer OP: no you shouldn't; no you're not special; stay at home unless you want this to go on for months longer than it already has.

This has put me in the mood for the garden section at B&Q, could do with another pot plant. Might get a Starbucks on the way home.

@Seriouslymole

2 bits of advice

 1. do whatever you need to make it through this in one piece (within the rules -as this would be). Go and walk round the garden centre, wear a mask, keep your distance.

 1. do not ever post on MN asking whether you should set foot out the door - it is full of complete lockdown lunatics. Most people in real life are slightly more measured.

Define 'covid police' @UrAWizHarry. Would that be anyone who understands the rules? Comments like yours are so depressing and are always from those who just don't get it. We're going to stuck in this for months.

You are clearly going to go anyway. We are all going stir crazy, it’s shit but if we all keep going for a browse because we are bored we are going to still be having these same conversations in another 12 months.
Just stay at home.

Go to the nearest park or open space and have a walk around there, once it stops raining.

I don't know of an garden centres that sell P* F*d. There's B&M/Pets at Home/Home Bargains/every single supermarket for that.

Well I suppose if you’re happy for the children and their families that your dh is teaching to go for a mooch about in the shops? If you do catch it the potential onward chain through your dh to all those key workers families would make me think twice. Go for a walk. Put on a movie and tidy out a cupboard or FaceTime a friend. Not too much longer.
