AIBU?

To go to a local garden centre?

I feel like I might get flamed for this. I'm on maternity leave and obviously we're in full lockdown. Where I live is also currently in the throes of Storm Christoph and the rain outside is literally like the wrath of god - so no chance of a walk. My baby is teething and really grumpy and I'm going out of my mind being stuck in the same four walls all day every day. All baby classes have been cancelled, can't even go somewhere for a quick coffee to break up the day. My husband is at work (he's a teacher and over half of the school are in because the government have massively expanded the list of what constitutes a 'key worker' - so it's not really a lockdown, but that's another thread!) We have a support bubble because we have a child under 1 but they're also at work in the week (also teachers). Our local garden centre (2 min drive away) is open - would I be unreasonable to pack the baby in the car and go and have a look round there for an hour? Just to break up the day and regain a bit of sanity? Not an essential journey, but arguably important for mental health! My husband now has weekly COVID tests - he had one yesterday and it was negative so it's highly unlikely we have it! Feel like I'm going mad!

Lots of the garden centres round here are now saying one person only, one has even said no children. They have all needed to do this to stop people going for a day out.

Having seen the number of snotty fingers that poke around in our local pick and mix I wouldn’t take it if it was free.
But there is a nice big stand full of new flavours of Haribo that always brightens up my day.

They’re open, so go.

Anyone who witters on about how you need to start your seeds now etc... for the hugely vast majority in England veg growing is nothing more than a hobby, and seeing as hobbycraft isn’t allowed to be open...

So have a wander, keep your distance and get a nice wind chime (bonus: you’ll be spending money to help keep the shop open and keep people in jobs!)

But you CAN leave the house, noone is saying not to🤷🏻 We are all just saying that going into some shop just for a walk because weather isn't nice is stupid.

No, I wouldn't. I know it's difficult, but we are all in it together, remember. I am in a similar situation and I want to go out so badly, but I don't. It would be an unnecessary risk for me, my son, my husband and every other person in the shop.

During Lockdown round 1 Wilkos put brown paper all over the pic and mix and closed it off. It's all open now which is baffling. Go in, get your essentials and get out? Nooooo ponder over the pick and mix, and touch all the scoops, maybe use your fingers if you fancy. No thank you!

@Seriouslymole

2 bits of advice

  1. do whatever you need to make it through this in one piece (within the rules -as this would be). Go and walk round the garden centre, wear a mask, keep your distance.

  1. do not ever post on MN asking whether you should set foot out the door - it is full of complete lockdown lunatics. Most people in real life are slightly more measured.

Yes, of course. 90,000 people have died of Covid, but you go and look at the pretty flowers if you're bored.

By the way, who will look after your baby if you die of Covid?

On a side note I work in retail in a shop that is allowed to stay open and you probably would avoid it if you knew how many members of staff we have had off with Covid or isolating because a family member has been diagnosed.

yes, it's shit for everyone. 1 in 10 could be infected, if you come into contact with one of them (and it doesn't take much, just look at the 'close contact' definition on gov.uk) then you'll have no choice about staying home. And this thing makes even younger people very ill or dead. Your baby needs you alive and well.

not fair on the staff either. Put on waterproofs, go outside, you won't dissolve. I get that baby care alone is boring and unrewarding, and you didn't sign up for this - but it is the virus that removes our freedoms, not the government.

@FlamedToACrisp

Except that of the 90,000 people who have died a negligible amount are / were of childbearing age with no health issues.

And no I’m not saying we shouldn’t be careful. I’m pointing out that HER risk of dying is negligible.

She of course may get sick or pass something on. But that’s not what you’ve said. You’ve said she’ll die because she’s gone to a garden centre.

More risk of being in a fatal RTA - but I guess you still get in a car or walk down a road pretty much daily?

The level of effort (or lack thereof) being put in by some people to get us out of this mess saddens me. If you need to get something essential then go. If not then think of others and do your bit. YABU.

flamed you win the award for being the most unreasonable person on here. Utterly ridiculous. You do know that people go to supermarkets, petrol stations, hospitals, WHsmiths, garden centres every single day?!

They are not struck down with lightening the last time I checked.

Honestly get a grip.

@Icanseegreenshoots

Ignore the posts that are hysterical. You are allowed to go, so go and enjoy it. It is one of the very few freedoms we have left.

reasons for leaving home from gov website.
Surprisingly enough, it doesn't include "go for a wander round the shops when you don't need to buy anything, but go enjoy it & you might feel a bit less bored"
