Tradesman asking for a sandwich

I’ve had a tradesman working on the outside of my property today. Got here about 11.30, job was about a couple of hours worth of work. About 1200 I went out and asked if I could get him a tea or coffee. He answered “Tea, white with two please, would you be able to knock me up a cheese sandwich while your there?”
Now, admittedly I’m rubbish at saying no at the best of times and I wasn’t expecting this so obliged, even returning to check if he would like pickle/tomato etc with it.”
Dp thinks I’ve lost the plot and he was being grabby and to be honest I’ve only ever made drinks with the odd biscuit before, the only exception being when we had an extension built which was a much longer project and I outdone make them bacon sandwiches on a Friday morning if I wasn’t working.
Would you have made a sandwich?

No !
Cheeky git.
I'd have told him to buy his own lunch.
You too nice.

I had this happen to me, I told him there's a shop at the top of the road!!

Thejoyfulstar · 19/01/2021 18:10

It's quite forward but I wouldnt have minded. I did mind when some workmen once asked me if they could stay the night to save them the long journey back the next day. They were being quite pushy about it too. My husband was at work and I was on my own. I felt so intimidated I called my husband in tears! He came home and told them where to go (a hotel!). I wouldnt have minded just making a sandwich!

mumda · 19/01/2021 18:10

Give him a bill when he gives your his.

noneedtopanic · 19/01/2021 18:15

No big deal really, yes a bit odd, but he might be struggling financially and it may have took some courage to ask, you never know. Bread, butter, cheese, not a big deal. I always offer people something, just in case, you never know, might have been his only food in the day.

cherish123 · 19/01/2021 18:19

He was very cheeky. Most tradesmen bring their own. If you didn't want to say no, you could have said you didn't have any bread or cheese.

VickyEadieofThigh · 19/01/2021 18:23

Absolutely not. I had to sort out my own lunches for work.

Passenger42 · 19/01/2021 18:37

Yes I would have made a sandwich and gladly if I wanted a decent job done! I don’t think it’s a big deal to be honest, I expect he forgot his packed lunch

Bloodypunkrockers · 19/01/2021 18:41
@IamtheDevilsAvocado I think you're probably over-thinking this. People, including tradesman, get hungry & thirsty, and you shouldn't be mean to them. After all, they're working for your benefit, doing a job which isn't always very pleasant. A little bit of friendship & consideration goes a long way!
GrinGrin

They're not doing out the goodness of their heart

They're professionals being paid to provide a service

ivfbabymomma1 · 19/01/2021 19:02

I'd have given him the sandwich, but I hate people going hungry! Would regret have been asked nicely though!!! He might of got a pack of crisps with it if he asked politely lol

saraclara · 19/01/2021 19:04

it’s the infantilising of the male working class....perpetuated by them but also encouraged by all these women in particular, who encourage it by supporting the idea they can’t possibly organise and feed themselves, but need the women to do it for them.

That.

mbosnz · 19/01/2021 19:05

We have one tradie, we've got to know him so well, I always offer him some of what we're having when we have lunch. He never accepts, but it seems so rude not to offer, lol.

Eggnoggoanngoanngoann · 19/01/2021 19:10

Hubby is a tradesman and when i read this to him hos opinion was the guy was a CF. He often gets asked if he would like anything but rarely accepts n would never ask as he packs his own lunch. Only thing we came up with to try n save your tradie from a CF label was that alot of carry out food places are no longer available due to pandemic....but he still could have grabbed a sarnie from Tescos (*other supermarket sandwiches are available )Grin..so yeah CF.

AvoidingNextdoorNeighbour · 19/01/2021 19:11

I just made the mistake of googling average hourly rate of a plumber.
I hope the poor man isn't destitute, starving needing a cheese sandwich.

Caelan2018 · 19/01/2021 19:28

Seriously your making a big deal about making a guy working on your house a sandwich..... he didn't ask you to cook him dinner

notthefunkind · 19/01/2021 19:34

As for the diabetic comment... WHAT? I have T1 diabetes and you can be damn sure I've got something to treat a hypo and my own lunch. I'm not going to count carbs and inject a sandwich I don't know the brands, amounts of!

Deidre21 · 19/01/2021 19:47

Agree with gamerchick

Realitea · 19/01/2021 19:53

I always offer food, sandwiches, cakes.. but I am a feeder.

Downtothelastbottleofwine · 19/01/2021 19:53

@Caelan2018 nope, OP is making a big deal out of someone doing something dickish. Do you demand your employer makes your lunch??

mizzmelli · 19/01/2021 19:54

LMAO!! Roast chicken dinners, mini pork pies and sausage rolls! Pots of stew and chunky soup AND puff pastry! this thread has cheered me up no end hahaha!

theantsgomarchin · 19/01/2021 20:12

Fuck me all this over a poxy cheese sandwich. Would've taken you all of 2 minutes and cost you 50p. The fact you even gave it a second thought is beyond me, let alone start a THREAD about it. Some people are so mean.

AcrobaticCardigan · 19/01/2021 21:32

Are you sure it wasn’t a cheeky joke? Then it was too awkward to say when it was clear you were making it?

JustAVeniceQueen · 19/01/2021 22:02

This thread! Full of people pleasers desperate to make the man, and by the looks of it any man, to like them.
