Stuffing.

Today I made and delivered a roast dinner to DBro who is isolating (left in the porch for the covid police)

Later I received a lovely message thanking me for said meal with a - "but wtf happened to your stuffing?"

Nothing happened to my stuffing, it transpires that my stuffing not being ball shaped was a source of great displeasure!!

YABU - stuffing should always be ball shaped.

YANBU - Who can be bothered with that faff, cook it in a dish and spoon it out.

All over the Christmas period, breakfast consisted of pigs in blankets and trays of ready made stuffing bought from M&S. We just cut into squares and ate.

We had bought one pack of stuffing balls and all agreed they were our least favourite.

Next time send that roast dinner my way! Sounds lovely Grin

Stuffing should ideally be cooked inside a bird and glopped out with a spoon, in my book. Any old shape at all. Your bro is a nidjit. Does he only eat packet food?

Wingedharpy · 18/01/2021 02:06

Leave him a jam sandwich and a glass of water next week OP.

BoomBoomsCousin · 18/01/2021 03:48

I thought stuffing balls were really just for canteens to make the portioning easy.

I dislike them, gives them too much "crust".

BarbaraofSeville · 18/01/2021 05:08

I only cook stuffing at Christmas, but do balls so it cooks quicker and both DP and I like it crusty, but there's also nothing wrong with putting it in a dish.

Your brother was rude to comment like that as even if it wasn't presented exactly to his preference, it's a minor technicality, and the fact remains that you did a generous thing that made his life a little bit nicer.

You could always give him the raw ingredients so he can make his own of course (obviously allowing for any health conditions that may preclude this).

PinkyParrot · 18/01/2021 05:17

Balls are nice because they're a bit crunchy. But any style suits me.

Shamefulcorners · 18/01/2021 05:17

YANBU Imho stuffing cooks much better in a dish outside of the bird and your dbro was bloomin' ungrateful to complain!

Takemetothebar · 18/01/2021 05:31

I’m going to assume that question from him was lighthearted:) it would have been in my family!

Stuffing should not be in balls. It goes crunchy and manky that way.

Stuffing should be cooked in the bird....

How nice of you to take him a roast- full sister points for that!!

Tinkerbell456 · 18/01/2021 05:32

Hmmm, a stuffing critic eh? Stuffing should be cooked in a bowl in my opinion.

OldAndWornOut · 18/01/2021 05:38

I like it very slightly puddingy and moist, so you can almost slice it, and that doesn't happen with balls.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/01/2021 05:45

It's called STUFFING. It goes in a bird or not at all.

Balls? Bloody heathens.

PeggyHill · 18/01/2021 05:56

As PP's have said, the only traditinal/proper way to have stuffing is when it's actually stuffed into the bird.

If you are cooking it separately then there are no rules, as far as I know! Do balls, do a big pan of it as one piece, sausage shape cut into slices... whatever

BarbaraofSeville · 18/01/2021 06:00

Ooh, I like the sliced sausage stuffing idea.

Don't they always say to cook the stuffing separately, because if you cook it in the bird, it will either be raw, or if cooked, the bird itself will be overdone.

PeggyHill · 18/01/2021 06:09

I have managed to cook everything to a good standard when the stuffing goes under the skin, but not when it goes in the cavity.

Personally I always do it separately because it like my stuffing to go crispy, and it just seems easier to cook the bird exactly how you like it when you don't have to factor in the stuffing

Kottbullar · 18/01/2021 06:24

If I'm being fancy or feeding a lot of people I make balls or if it's a meaty stuffing cook it in a loaf tin and slice it.
Just for a normal roast I just put in a dish.

SabrinaThwaite · 18/01/2021 07:56

Next time give him Paxo - that’ll learn him.

Tinkerbell456 · 18/01/2021 08:03

Quite right MrsTerry Pratchett. Heathens indeed. This is the hill I choose to die on. Give me moist stuffing or give me death! ( Not really actually.Stuffing balls are fine! ).

rabbitheadlights · 18/01/2021 08:09

DBro was indeed very grateful he genuinely thought I'd done something wrong!! Everything he eats comes from the freezer, even roast potatoes (shudder).

IamMaz · 18/01/2021 08:22

I cook a lot but have never faffed with making stuffing into ball shapes!!!

AlwaysLatte · 18/01/2021 08:35

I never do stuffing balls! I cook it in a separate dish usually.

FenEel · 18/01/2021 08:40

I prefer balls. Fnar.
It says to do balls on the Paxo packet (classy). I find it goes too squidgy if done in a tin.
Sausage meat stuffing would go inside the chicken or turkey so that would be different.

Cadent · 18/01/2021 08:47

He doesn’t sound grateful. Sounds like a dig. I wouldn’t be dropping off any more roast dinners.

DownToTheSeaAgain · 18/01/2021 09:00

Sausage meat stuffing goes in the bird at the other end from the hole. Underneath the flap of skin.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 18/01/2021 09:03

I think I'd tell him stuff the meal deliveries, fend for himself.
Rude git.

shitinmyhandsandclap · 18/01/2021 09:06

Balls to balls, it goes too hard but soggy in the middle. I prefer to do it an oblong shallow dish so it cooks consistently with a slight crust to the top
