First.....I know there's so much tragedy going on in the world and I'm glad my problems are small ones.

DH has recently started to not flush after peeing. It's horrible and strong and stinks. His defence is a half hearted attempt at trying to save polar bears. In reality he's trying to safe money. The en-suite loo gets stained so I'm killing off all sorts by pour bleach there often. Now he's started doing it in the tiny down stairs loo which is opposite the living room door. It's long been agreed that nobody should poo in there because of noise and smell etc. AIBU to ask DH flush after peeing?! Today I was so overwhelmed with the smell I lost it a little and his attitude didn't help. To me it's disgusting to not flush especially if your a man with stinky wee, (do you think men's wee is stronger than women's?) I've got two boys, what if they follow suit!

I’d start forgetting to flush after a poo or having my period. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 17/01/2021 16:50

No that's disgusting. I would absolutely insist he flushes. If he refuses I'd start flushing it twice just to make a point.

LagneyandCasey · 17/01/2021 16:51

Yanbu. I couldn't put up with that. If he wants to save water he can get a water saver to put in the cistern.

cherrypie111 · 17/01/2021 16:55

I'd be more concerned his wee smells so strongly tbh. I'm never fussed about some wee left in the toilet so I'm going with yabu

Soubriquet · 17/01/2021 16:58

We don’t flush after every wee either but if it smelled that strongly, I would

TillyTopper · 17/01/2021 17:01

I would find that utterly disgusting if anyone did that. I'd be having serious words and get him to use vast amounts of toilet cleaner whilst I stood over him to make my point.

heatered · 17/01/2021 17:01

I'm don't have a weak stomach, I work in a care home so I'm used to it all but I just don't want it at home to. DH does drink coffee which I think is making the smell worse, though from experience I think men's wee is stronger.

SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 17/01/2021 17:03

If his pee is that strong it might attract polar bears.

Pimlicojo · 17/01/2021 17:03

My DH sometimes forgets to flush after a wee but I've never noticed any smell?

ComtesseDeSpair · 17/01/2021 17:07

If it genuinely smells then he should flush. Men’s wee does smell more than women’s but diluted in water it shouldn’t really stink unless it’s there for hours, though.

I don’t flush after a wee, because I’m a cheapskate with a water meter. So can’t really blame your DH.

Beenaboutabit · 17/01/2021 17:08

He needs to drink more water. He's dehydrated with all the coffee and the proof is in the pan.

As well as encouraging him to drink more water, Maybe get one of the water savers you can pop in the cistern

legalseagull · 17/01/2021 17:11

I'd follow him every time and shout "flush!!!" Outside the door

pensivepigeon · 17/01/2021 17:15

Insist he flushes and closes the seat and lid. Tell him about the water saved being a false economy as it means you have to bleach the toilet more.

pensivepigeon · 17/01/2021 17:17

Oh and seat and lid should be closed because of the cloud of the aerosol spray from the toilet when it is flushed getting on towels, toothbrushes etc.

EileenGC · 17/01/2021 17:19

Is your heating ever on, does he ever leave a light on when moving to another room, does he drive a car, eats meat or dairy? Does he have children, where does he buy his clothes from?

If the answer to all the above is no, I'd say he's very committed to his cause to save the polar bears and would be packing my bags (or his) and go separate ways.

If this is just some strange obsession and a half-try at being environmentally friendly, I'd sit him down and explain that when you leave with other people, you need to have an acceptable socially respectful behaviour. That includes keeping a clean loo and not leaving your pee in there for hours so it stinks up the place and leaves marks on the toilet. I assume he's never in charge of cleaning it? Or he says it doesn't bother him...

EileenGC · 17/01/2021 17:20

Live* with other people, not leave...

Shoxfordian · 17/01/2021 17:30

Tell him it’s disgusting and that he needs to flush

CandyLeBonBon · 17/01/2021 17:32

I think that's sharks? Wouldn't want either swimming up my U-bend tbh!
partyatthepalace · 17/01/2021 17:34

Well he can’t just do that - it would have to be something you agree.

If he won’t stop. Leave a used tampon (or one that you have amusingly coloured in) on the seat till he does.

And tell him to drink more water!

Chanandlerbong01 · 17/01/2021 17:38

I had this same issue! I pointed out that I flushed his away before using it anyway because I couldn’t stand the smell so it was making no difference - I then kept nagging him to scrub the toilet because it was going skanky, this helped a little but he still wouldn’t bother all of the time, so then I started shouting him to come flush it so I could go in and it drove him mad so that he started flushint

This. Wee diluted in water shouldn't smell so strongly that is bothering you.

Is he drinking enough liquid? Not your job to make fun drink obv but is be turning the conversation to what's wrong with him medically rather than behaviourally

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 17/01/2021 17:42

Could you get him to pee in the garden?

You could point out that apparently male urine deters foxes and so by doing this any local foxes may be inclined to move farther north - towards the Artic Circle - where the polar bears are. Might work.

SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 17/01/2021 17:45

He’ll scorch the grass and elves will think it is fairy circles in the dim light. They’ll trample all the bedding plants down queuing up for a bit of fairy foof.

Or get eaten by sharks, polar bears or foxes....
