To want subtitles on every program

99redspottedducks · 16/01/2021 22:45

More often that not lately the programmes I'm watching on sky don't have subtitles Angry
I'm not deaf but I find it hard to hear programs and do rely on subtitles a lot of the time as else I seem to miss chucks of what the person is saying.
It's infuriating especially, I've found, on downloaded programs on demand
Why are subtitles not common place on every program these days?

I am in my 40s and always use subtitles. I cant rememebr when I started doing this.... am I old!?

Lockheart · 16/01/2021 22:48

Downloaded versions often don't have subtitles. If you stream them from the original source you should be fine for subtitles.

Lockheart · 16/01/2021 22:49

You'd need to download the subtitles too, if you see what I mean.

user1473878824 · 16/01/2021 22:49

They are, aren’t they?

FrankieFrankFrank · 16/01/2021 22:49

My parents always had the subtitles on and I kind of inherited it. I hate it when a programme doesn’t have them, or even worse they are completely out of time.
I believe a recent study has said it helps children to read as well, and as I never turn them off my poor dd watches everything with them on too Grin

Niconacotaco · 16/01/2021 22:51

I agree. I don't want the TV to wake the kids but I have trouble with certain voices and accents at low volumes.

NoWordForFluffy · 16/01/2021 22:51

Our kids love subtitles! We have them on all the time now.

This is my problem. Had DS shout down earlier could I turn it down it was keeping him awake BlushGrin Gave up on that program!

If youve got a modern tv you should be able to choose to have subtitles on.

Clawdy · 16/01/2021 22:58

This is why I like the French drama series and Scandi noir - subtitles straight away!

Sparklesocks · 16/01/2021 23:01

I’ve noticed Amazon Prime Video seems to have them missing from quite a few of their titles which is a real shame, especially compared to Netflix who as far as I know have them on everything.

Agree it should be standard for accessibility reasons - and yes I found the sound mixing on a lot of modern films/tv can be off (very loud music but mumbly dialogue) so they’re helpful. Also sometimes have them on if I’m eating crisps Grin

Directionerforever · 16/01/2021 23:01

I always have the subtitles on, have done ever since I saw 888 in the corner of ‘the broom cupboard’ and typed it in to teletext out of interest 🤣

It is super frustrating when you download something and it doesn’t have them on. More so if you need them as opposed to me just liking them.

saturdaynightgin · 16/01/2021 23:05

As someone who has worn hearing aids for most of my life, lack of subtitling is infuriating and means I cannot watch a program Angry

Binglebong · 16/01/2021 23:05

I agree. I really struggle without them and feel they should be automatically available on everything. I don't get why they are missing if you download a program.

Also why do we not have sign language interpreters on all government broadcasts such as corona briefings? Little American towns use them with the police briefings so we have no excuse. I can't even use them but still get angry at the inconsiderate lack.

Mum has this problem with Sky downloads

Is there a way round it? I try to record things for her so she has subtitles - but then she'll hear about a programme later, then I download it.

proper link!

randomchap · 16/01/2021 23:10

I'd like them on all programs. When the DC are asleep I have the TV at low volume and put subtitles on incase I don't catch what's being said.

Backtoblack1 · 16/01/2021 23:12

I love subtitles! It’s my new thing. No idea why! Grin

Godimabitch · 16/01/2021 23:13

I always have subtitles on, I dont like the TV loud (sensory processing disorder) so I use the subtitles to affirm what I'm hearing. Netflix does sometimes have wrong subtitles though which drives me mental, like it means the same thing, but different words. I use the sound, lips and subtitles so when they dont match I struggle and just watch something else. Same when it's not English speech or the original wasn't English but they've put English sound over the video.

user184628462 · 16/01/2021 23:16

Netflix is great for subtitles. Unless you're watching something that's been dubbed, in which case what you're hearing them say and what you're reading won't match at all. Not delayed, but a different (usually simpler) translation gets used for the subtitles. Frustrating.

Tiny2222 · 16/01/2021 23:21

I love subtitles!! I find it keeps me on track with what I'm watching because sometimes I kind of get lazy and stop listening to the show. Also it helps when you are eating crisps hahaha. I also always have them on for my 6 year old bc I've heard it will help with his reading.

Merename · 16/01/2021 23:25

I find subtitles really annoying, I feel they interfere with my connection with what’s happening, when my mum/sister like having them on. However in terms of accessibility I’d agree they should be standard, but with an option to turn them off.

Scattyhattie · 16/01/2021 23:35

I find this frustrating too & I don't even have hearing issues but find it helps me to focus to follow programmes so tend to have on for most things except news or live events where it being out of sync makes it more confusing.
Prime seems to have lot content without & if I watch something on catchup that's played via hub/app it doesn't always then show subtitles. It doesn't seem to make much sense with technology today.

Lockheart · 16/01/2021 23:37

@AcornAutumn I don't have Sky but if you do a quick search on their forums there should be information about downloading subtitle files with the downloaded programme.
