To want subtitles on every program

99redspottedducks · 16/01/2021 22:45

More often that not lately the programmes I'm watching on sky don't have subtitles Angry
I'm not deaf but I find it hard to hear programs and do rely on subtitles a lot of the time as else I seem to miss chucks of what the person is saying.
It's infuriating especially, I've found, on downloaded programs on demand
Why are subtitles not common place on every program these days?

I detest subtitles. MIL has them on all the time. They’re so irritating. I don’t think you can watch the program, and just read the subtitles.

CoRhona · 16/01/2021 23:41

I am pretty deaf and do need them. Dark and atmospheric location with fast words spoken by well spoken actors are the worst - can't see well enough to work out what they're saying and can't make head nor tail of the dialogue.

However, I get annoyed when subtitles censor language and / or are wildly out of sync. My kids were complaining recently that subtitles were showing the winner of a programme ages before it was verbally announced!

AcornAutumn · 16/01/2021 23:45
@AcornAutumn I don't have Sky but if you do a quick search on their forums there should be information about downloading subtitle files with the downloaded programme.
I did...I found something that didnt seem to relate to mum's system.

I always have the subtitles on, I've done it for as long as I can remember. It used to drive my DH bonkers when we first met, but now he's exactly the same. I point blank refuse to watch something on Amazon Prime or Netflix if there aren't any subtitles.

ToffeePennie · 16/01/2021 23:51

Yanbu.
I am 31 and since we moved into our own house we have subtitles on EVERYTHING.
It started 3 years ago when I had a very nasty ear infection that left me deaf in one ear for 6 months +.
It really knocked me about and ever since we’ve kept the subtitles on.
It’s good for kids reading skills too!

RainyDay2020 · 16/01/2021 23:57

It drives me mad that some channels show films with no subtitles - it means the film is unwatchable for me.
Also some programmes with the scrolling subtitles which are 30 seconds behind the actual dialogue and so often nothing like what’s actually being said!

DrFoxtrot · 16/01/2021 23:57

YANBU I can't follow anything if I miss parts of conversation.

BlueThistles · 17/01/2021 00:09

I too am a SUBTITLER for everything and feel despair when there are none Hmm

I have a real live subtitler living and working in my house as we speak! I shall tell her how appreciated she is when I see her in the morning. ( not sure if she’s doing news or sport tonight)
It’s funny hearing her do it, as she chants back the words into a speech recognition programme and then has to tidy up the mis-heard words.

@Justnormajean I thought they typed everything and some just typed better than others Grin

Didn't realise it was vr, that's interesting.

Netflix is great for subtitles. Unless you're watching something that's been dubbed, in which case what you're hearing them say and what you're reading won't match at all. Not delayed, but a different (usually simpler) translation gets used for the subtitles. Frustrating.
Yes it’s great for subtitles, I was watching Star Trek Discovery and there was even the choice of subtitles in Klingon!
EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 17/01/2021 01:07

My sister isn't deaf, but does have some hearing impairment (and does use subtitles) - have you had your hearing tested recently?

Summerunlover · 17/01/2021 01:12

Audio description is even less available; it drives me crazy. Now tv don’t use it or ITV player.

If you've got a smart TV or are playing from a computer somecan do automatic subtitles (nowadays the most accurate though

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/01/2021 02:24

Yes, they should be standard, because of the fashion for ‘realistic’ dialogue, aka actors mumbling.

You can change the audio back to the original language, I find it much easier to follow when the sound at least matches what I lip-read and I don't get so confused over non matching audio and subs.

On Netflix you just choose the "language and subtitles" option and choose which audio track you want.

Sorka · 17/01/2021 02:27

I use subtitles when I’m struggling to catch what’s being said. Usually when actors mumble or whisper because they think it helps their performance, or when they’re attempting an accent they can’t pull off. Add in an overly loud soundtrack that’s attempting to instruct me in what emotion I should be feeling and there’s no hope.

I want to know exactly what’s being said and find it infuriating when the subtitles and words don’t match.

Some things can’t be watched with subtitles. Like quiz shows - the answer comes up at the same time as the question.

I can’t bear sign language when I’m trying to watch something. I know some people need it but I think it should be an option you can turn on or off. I’m always disappointed when I want to watch something to find someone pasted over a big chunk of screen or the programme smushed into a corner and I find all the movement far too distracting so I simply can’t watch.
