What to eat during hotel stay

Not aibu just posting for traffic.

Our kitchen had a leak and the entire kitchen needs to be ripped out and replaced. Landlord has put us in a hotel for 4 days so the workmen can replace the kitchen including all units and flooring.

The only problem we have is that the hotels restaurant is closed due to covid, they aren't even operating room service. No cooking facilities whatsoever. My daughter has food allergies: all dairy, potato, tomato, kiwi, peanuts, MSG, oranges, shellfish, peaches, aubergine, peppers and cocoa. I have no idea what to feed her with absolutely no cooking facilities. Takeaways aren't an option due to the long list of ingredients and she can't have and the MSG.

Any ideas what to do for food while we are stuck in a hotel for a few days? No family nearby so no way to have meals with them. We won't have a fridge or any cooking facilities. Staying at home isn't an option either, we have to be out of the property whilst the work takes place.

Thank you in advance!

I would ask if a friend could cook a meal for you and you collect it with a cool bag, even if just baked potato and you buy tuna

Otherwise, paper plates and picnic food

Depends where you are, but if you check your nearest church or village hall and see if it has a kitchen you might find they will agree to you using it for a small donation if you explain the circumstances. They are almost all closed due to lockdown, so your unlikely to find that you'd be conflicting with any regular bookings.

This sounds ridiculous, he's put you in a hotel because you have no access to your kitchen really, and to pick a hotel that has no food or kitchen facilities is therefore pretty pointless you might as well stay at home, it'd be noisy and annoying but you'd have access to fridge, be able to move your toaster etc into another room!

Get back on to your landlord and tell him what the problem is so he can fix it.

Cold food for a few days is ok if you aren't battling allergies and can buy pre prepped stuff but trying to do it with the allergies your child has is just daft.

@ElizaLaLa

Google prison cooking. By the shit I overhear Dh watching on YouTube, there's some very inventive stuff you can do.

One bloke made omelette in a doritos bag.

I remember reading on here that you can cook bacon rashers on/in hair straighteners!! 🤣

"Look what I found" pouches of stew and curry are quite good. I have reheated the sealed packs in hot water when camping. Could have them with rice (from a pouch), lentils or just bread.
Hummus and baguette.
Roast chicken (buy a hot one), couscous and salad.
Ring out for "Just eat" etc.

I lived in a room for a while and used an electric steamer. Three layers. You can cook rice, vegetables, fish in it. I’d alternate with a couple of cold meals with instant porridge pots in the morning for breakfast.

You could do instant oats with soya milk and kettle boiled eggs for breakfast.

Get some really nice bread and all of her favorite toppings and make really spectacular sandwiches.

Lentil or quinoa chips and hummus - this should be fine in a cool box for four days.

Fresh fruit and carrot sticks should also be fine in a cooler.

Bottles or tins of tuna, pickles, and salady-type things.

You can cook ramen by immersing it in boiling water for a few minutes, and add some tinned tuna and veg.

Bring lots of her favourite snacks and sweets, playing cards and board games, and make it a Great Adventure.

With time and planning they could have had American MREs, which have hearing bags.

That would have been awesome!

Can you just eat sandwiches for four days? Bit boring but it's not forever!

Do you really not have any friends nearby!? You could pre-cook the meals and ask them to keep them in a fridge for you and heat them up when you need them and you just pick up? Or lots of restaurants are now operating as takeaway now. Have a look in your local area. Thai food is very good for dairy allergies as it is made mostly with coconut milk. Is that an option with her other allergies?

I lived for ages (I mean more than a year) with no fridge & a small toaster oven. Buy fresh each day, and honestly food won't go off - you can leave things like a small carton of milk in a bowl of water or in the basin in the bathroom for example, and if you can hang things from the window, or place on a window ledge & open the window a little bit at night (sleeping with the window open is good for you anyway) then you can keep things cool.

It's only 4 days. Slow cookers, camp stoves(!!) etc will be really awkward. Just keep it simple. Cold picnic food and cup a soup

Maybe ask the Landlord to organise a lift for you so that you can take a few essentials. I managed for a year with an induction ring, a microwave and a slow cooker. I suppose 4 days is too short a time to organise too much. Why not talk to hotel and see if they will store homemade items in their fridge for you if kitchen not in use, then you would only need a microwave. Probably have better luck if its a small independent rather than one of the big chains with 'rules'.

I have an electric cool box that's on wheels with a handle for pulling it along. Could you possibly borrow one? Or even buy one? It's pretty light when it's empty so not too difficult on the train etc.

We do this all the time on holiday . Has the hotel got a small fridge in room for milk or can you take an ice box ? We normally do a small shop on Arrival for our child with allergies . Make sure you have a kettle . These things should be available in your room really as it’s not your fault the kitchen needs replacing .

A family member had this in august and refused hotel as they need to make sure you have food/somewhere you can cook. I would be going back to them and saying this is not suitable for our circumstances. Maybe they will pay for a microwave or a little 2 hob (we were given one when our kitchen was replaced a few years ago).

We've moved recently and the kitchen is dire, the oven barely works and the hob is impossibly slow. I've bought a cheap Tefal induction hob and a combi microwave with a grill which keeps us going, though we do have a good fridge. I think you'll just have to shop every day as you can't keep food fresh.
