Sister says that I do eat breakfast.

I say I eat a snack and that breakfast cannot be eaten after 10.30.

Why can't it be both? Breaking a fast and a light meal. That to me is both breakfast and a snack. A snack fast. A breakack.

I'm reaching.

BillyIsMyBunny · 16/01/2021 08:28

I don’t eat breakfast but I don’t eat anything at all until my lunch at 12-1:00. If you’re eating something in the morning before lunch then yes, you’re eating breakfast. A snack is something you eat between meals so if you haven’t had breakfast yet you can’t really count the first thing you eat as a snack as you’re not eating it between two meals.

midnightstar66 · 16/01/2021 08:28

Yes it's breakfast if it's the first thing you eat all day (and is before lunch) like if you had a sandwich at 12.30 I'd call it lunch but a banana at 11 is my typical breakfast too.

midnightstar66 · 16/01/2021 08:31

Yes that’s breakfast, you just eat it at eleven. There is no rule on what time breakfast has to be eaten by, unless you typically like to eat in McDonald’s.

Even McDonald's serves breakfast til 11 now.

BillyIsMyBunny · 16/01/2021 08:33

@peak2021

I view a banana as an alternative to a pudding with a main meal, or as a snack.

As for the time of breakfast, don't care so long as you avoid calling anything brunch, something from the US that should never be mentioned in the Uk ever.

From what I can find the idea of eating brunch originated in England in the late 19th century and didn’t become popular in the USA until the 1930s.
islockdownoveryet · 16/01/2021 08:52

Well I’d call it brunch , often on a Sunday I make a nice breakfast brunch I call it , about 11/12 .
As I wfh most days I eat breakfast after 9 and sometimes it’s a banana I’m not always hungry first thing .

Notjustanymum · 16/01/2021 08:58

Whatever you eat after fasting overnight is breaking your fast, so even a few raisins would be breakfast!

MisfitRightIn · 16/01/2021 09:03

I’d say you’ve skipped breakfast and eaten elevenses.

Uhhuhoyaye · 16/01/2021 09:26

Not happy with the literal meaning of breaking your fast. If so, a cupboard is a board for cups.

And according to google some of the definitions of 'fast' are an abstinence from food and drink. So arguably your breakfast is your cup of tea.

For me, breakfast is a meal eaten within an hour or two of waking, arguably getting up, otherwise you've missed breakfast and are either snacking or having a leisurely brunch.

PattyPan · 16/01/2021 09:38

I’d say it’s breakfast if you eat it before noon

Brighterthansunflowers · 16/01/2021 09:45

It’s breakfast.

It’s not brunch because you then have a separate lunch later

gannett · 16/01/2021 10:05

Yeah I'd call this breakfast, sorry OP.

If the first thing I eat in the day is a normal breakfast food, I'll call it breakfast up until early afternoon (eg a bowl of cereal at 1pm).

If the first thing I eat in the day isn't a normal breakfast food I'll still call it breakfast if it's in the morning (eg hungover leftovers at 9am).

Brunch is a quite specific kind of meal to me involving eggs, toast and/or some kind of cooking.

Elevenses only comes into play if you've already had breakfast (eg cereal at 8am and then a banana or biscuit at 11am).

Banana at 11am as the first thing you eat is firmly breakfast!

Skipsurvey · 16/01/2021 10:07

i guess you could say you dont eat breakfast
but you eat a snack at 11

PikaPikaJigglypuff · 16/01/2021 10:11

Definitely breakfast!

stepmad · 16/01/2021 10:12

I got covid for christmas thankfully really mildly but having to self isolate before i got ill. Got into a habit of getting up late eating breakfast at about 11 then fruit about three ish and supper at 7. I tend to eat when i am hungry just works for me.

june2007 · 16/01/2021 10:13

It,s a snack. And everyone knows it. But since that snack is first thing they have eaten they are breaking the fast so it becomes breakfast.

cushioncovers · 16/01/2021 10:17

It's breaking the overnight fast so the banana is breakfast. The time is irrelevant. IMO

MargotMoon · 16/01/2021 10:35

@Bluntness100

Yes that’s breakfast, you just eat it at eleven. There is no rule on what time breakfast has to be eaten by, unless you typically like to eat in McDonald’s. Is this where you got the time constraint idea?

Exactly Grin

MaryShelley1818 · 16/01/2021 11:00

You eat a banana for breakfast

partyatthepalace · 16/01/2021 11:54

It’s breakfast. It means break fast. Also you are eating in the morning as is usual. And your meal is just fruit, so not enough to be counted as brunch or lunch. In court my money’s on your sister Grin
