Sister says that I do eat breakfast.

I say I eat a snack and that breakfast cannot be eaten after 10.30.

Whatever you eat first breaks your overnight fast, that is were the word breakfast comes from.

NoOneOwnsTheRainbow · 15/01/2021 17:33

I think a banana is breakfast, I have them regularly haha.

MagnoliaBeige · 15/01/2021 17:35

With those timings I’d say you skipped breakfast and had a mid morning snack

Bluntness100 · 15/01/2021 17:36

Yes that’s breakfast, you just eat it at eleven. There is no rule on what time breakfast has to be eaten by, unless you typically like to eat in McDonald’s. Is this where you got the time constraint idea?

AllPlayedOut · 15/01/2021 17:36

That's definitely breakfast.

Redglitter · 15/01/2021 17:39

*So if you work shifts do you eat "dinner" when you wake up at 6pm and have cereal?

Yes, that would be dinner! 6pm= dinner time*

No thats breakfast because you've been asleep all day & its the first meal you've had since waking up

goodwinter · 15/01/2021 17:40

For everyone saying "breakfast is whatever you eat first that day" - I don't eat 'breakfast'; my first meal is at 1pm. Is that breakfast? If I told my colleagues I was off for a breakfast break they'd think I was mad.

Imo the concept of breakfast has moved past its etymology but there's no solid line. Personally I think it's to do with how long you've been awake for.... On a weekday I call my 1pm meal lunch. If I'd got up at midday, that 1pm meal is probably breakfast?

maddiemookins16mum · 15/01/2021 17:41

Before 11am breakfast
After 11am before 12.30 - brunch
12.30 onwards (until 2pm) lunch

goodwinter · 15/01/2021 17:42

Or what about people who follow OMAD (one meal a day) and eat their one meal in the evening? I mean that's literally a break-fast but it ain't breakfast Grin

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 15/01/2021 17:45

it breaks the period when (presumably) you fast overnight.
In that sense, it is your Breakfast - but seriously, who gives a toss what you call it?

TillyTopper · 15/01/2021 17:48

If the banana breaks your fast then it's breakfast whether its 6am or 2pm or whatever.

Ifailed · 15/01/2021 17:48

Does this mean no one is allowed to eat anything before a wedding breakfast?

butterpuffed · 15/01/2021 17:55

It doesn't really matter

DodoApplet · 15/01/2021 17:56

I browsed right through this just to see who would be the first person to describe a snack eaten at 11am as "elevenses" - and so far, nobody has. Does anybody else still use the term?

supersop60 · 15/01/2021 18:01

It doesn't matter what you call it. Is that what you are arguing about - a name?
Technically breakfast is breaking the fast (as loads of people have said), but it's also the name we give to an early morning meal.
You and your sister are never going to agree.

Runnerduck34 · 15/01/2021 18:03

If I hadnt eaten earlier I would call it breakfast.

But if I had eaten earlier it would be a snack😆

PawPawNoodle · 15/01/2021 18:06

Mcdonalds serves breakfast until 11am and thus, you are eating breakfast as it could have been a mcmuffin.

SpiderGwen · 15/01/2021 18:10

Anything prior to roughly noon - that is your first food of the day - I’d call breakfast.

Longdistance · 15/01/2021 18:15

Breakfast is the first meal of the day.

noitsasnack · 15/01/2021 18:15

If the banana is the first thing you eat it's breakfast.

If you already had cereal at 8.00 it's a snack .

butterpuffed · 15/01/2021 18:17

Fortunate that all the cafes are closed right now, an all day breakfast would be really confusing Wink

Eckhart · 15/01/2021 18:17

It's late for breakfast but early for lunch. Is it a brun-ana?

FrippEnos · 15/01/2021 18:18

@noitsasnack

So if you work shifts do you eat "dinner" when you wake up at 6pm and have cereal?

Yes, that would be dinner! 6pm= dinner time.

OP you are as inflexible as the postman that said to me "isn't it to early for alcohol" at 07:30 after I had finished a night shift and was getting ready for bed.
Nooch · 15/01/2021 18:24

As it’s a banana, which I consider to be a suitable breakfast item and you eat it in the morning, it is breakfast. If you had already eaten something else breakfasty earlier it would be a snack.
