Not to wash my pillows

Pill0wTalk · 14/01/2021 12:18

Just seen on ThisMorning that after 2 years, if unwashed, 10% of a pillow is made up of dust mites and dead skin etc.

Phil and a Holly looked disgusted at the thought of anyone not washing their pillows on a regular basis. I can honestly say, I've NEVER washed my pillows! Is it just me?

I don't wash them but buy cheap pillows and replace often.

halcyondays · 14/01/2021 12:21

When I’ve washed them they’ve gone horribly lumpy.

Elouera · 14/01/2021 12:21

I have washed them, but they often come out lumpy! I do tend to buy new ones every few years, but it does seem a waste. Maybe a laundrette could clean them better?

MeDearNoDear · 14/01/2021 12:22

Nope, I've never washed pillows either

RonObvious · 14/01/2021 12:22

I don't wash pillows either - just replace them occasionally. Isn't that why we use pillow cases?

schmockdown · 14/01/2021 12:23

I've never washed mine they are memory foam, the cover zips off to be washed though (never done it!), and I have a pillo protector and then pillow case on top of that.

LivingMyBestLife2020 · 14/01/2021 12:24

I replace yearly but don’t wash. I sleep alone so i regularly swap between all 4 pillows and I regularly spray with zoflora, but I’m sure others will be along to put us down, call us vile and that we’ve given them the rage 😂

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 14/01/2021 12:25

No point in washing them as they go lumpy. We use pillow protectors and buy new pillows every year at least.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 14/01/2021 12:25

I don’t think you can wash a feather pillow. Microfibre you can but not recommended to do it often.

redcandlelight · 14/01/2021 12:26

I wash them once a year after hayfever season.
hollow fibre pillows that don't go lumpy.

Hopeforhappiertimesahead · 14/01/2021 12:26

My pillows are down with a thick pillow protector then a pillowcase, never washed but replaced when needed, surly that's what pillow protectors are for? And they get washed every other week

redcandlelight · 14/01/2021 12:27

you can wet feathers smell a bit, but once dry they are as good as new.
GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 14/01/2021 12:28

I have a pillow protector which probably stops the worse issues if washed with sheets.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 14/01/2021 12:29

I thought you were meant to sponge outside of feather pillows rather than wash? I don’t have them anymore but only ever sponged when I did.

MsVestibule · 14/01/2021 12:30

Isn't that what decent pillow protectors are for??? I've only tried to machine wash a pillow once and it didn't end well.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 14/01/2021 12:31

I've got expensive feather pillows and wash them once a year on a hot day, they dry outside perfectly.

HearMeSnore · 14/01/2021 12:34

I tried to wash a feather pillow once. It was never the same after. The feathers clumped together and it seemed to lose about half of its volume.

Maybe that half was the dead skin, dust mites and other crap that had accumulated. But the pillow was all but useless and I ended up buying a new one.

So, no. I wouldn't wash my pillows again. Maybe I'll look into dry cleaning if they get smelly but I usually replace them once they lose their fluffiness anyway.

You can wash feather pillows but they take a while to dry and need a lot of shaking and reshaping while drying.

I have washed my non-feather ones in the bath having lost a few due to going lumpy in the machine. Also use a thicker cotton protector so save having to replace them too often because I find it difficult to get ones that are comfortable.

mumwon · 14/01/2021 12:55

OK
so mid summer hot weather
put quilt than pillows in bath use washing up liquid or liquid soap (easier to rinse!) than put out side on line to dry - each bed & pillows in turn - you can get travel wash liquid
I use pillow protectors as well

DaphneBridgerton · 14/01/2021 12:55

Never. I replace them every 2 years maybe... but now I'm considering a trip to the drycleaners!

queenofSI · 14/01/2021 12:57

pillows don’t get dry cleaned at a dry cleaners, they get machine washed and tumble dried

AlwaysCheddar · 14/01/2021 12:57

Hoover them! And your mattress. If you are brave..... (for the ‘full’ effect you need a hoover which you can see the contents!!!!

mumwon · 14/01/2021 12:58

@SlopesOff cross post Grin
(I than use diluted soapy water on garden - the apple/plum trees are quite happy about having clean roots ditto the grass! Grin)

lemonsquashie · 14/01/2021 13:24

Oops no. Isn't that what pillow cases are for?

livingthegoodlife · 14/01/2021 13:27

I stick my feather & down pillows in a normal washing machine then tumble dry them. Absolutely fine. I do it about once every two years. They have pillow protectors on that are regularly washed.

I also wash my duvet.

I try and do it in the summer so it mostly dries outdoors but you definitely need the tumble dryer to make it fluffy again.
