@PerkingFaintly

Not sure why this thread has turned into an Olympics of evil people? I'm not inclined to bite.

As well as not feeling the need to award medals, I agree with RTB that 'evil' is a notion that prevent us from identifying the problems.

Perking, you're right; sorry I bit.
NotaRealLawyer · 13/01/2021 15:24

I wonder if Trump is watching "Escape to the Country" with Melania? (For UK viewers)
What with downsizing, due to a career change, and all that.

Today's schedule from the BBC website

A closer look at today's schedule
Lawmakers are continuing their statements. Here's how we think the day is likely to play out. Votes in the House are taking longer than usual due to social-distancing measures.

09:55 EST (14:55 GMT) - This is where we're at now - coming close to the end of an hour's of debate on the rule (not the article of impeachment), between Republicans and Democrats.

11:15 EST (16:15 GMT) - A vote on the rule itself, this could last around an hour.

12:30 EST (17:30 GMT) - Now we'll enter two hours of debate on the impeachment article itself. Again, this will be equally divided between the parties.

15:00 EST (20:00 GMT) - The House will vote on whether or not to impeach President Trump for a second time, with the result expected about an hour after voting begins.

That's really helpful Duncin thank you.

Does he have the potential to be worse? You think he doesn't. Others do. This is opinion

Anyone who genuinely thinks Trump has the potential to be worse than Adolf Hitler seriously needs their heads examining.

Well the orange one has done more damage to the republic than osama ever did - arguably osama even united the republic - so yes Trump is easily worse than bin laden.

What republic? Confused

Roussette · 13/01/2021 15:35

i cannot get over how some of the Republicans' reasons for not impeaching. The one who was calling other Republicans has just urged all Repubs to vote 'no' to everything including special measures.

For unity he says Shock
How? They were trying to overturn an election FFS. Where's the unity there....

Trump was capable of destroying the world.

And yet... he didn't destroy the world, despite spending the last four years as the most powerful man on the planet. An inconvenient truth to you lot I know!

RedToothBrush · 13/01/2021 15:36

One of the things that stops us from preventing bad things from happening is the inability and lack of capacity to image HOW bad these things may be and HOW FAR humans will take things in extreme situations.

Complacency and comfort leave us vulnerable to them happening again.

One parallel I will note, is how there is very little evidence to implicate Hitler directly in atrosity. Its all indirect and delegated downward in the chain of command to allow room for plausable denail. He would indicate he had certain ideals and prefences, but not give direct orders to do certain things. It was up to those under him to decide what they should do to gain favour and achieve certain goals (which included forgetting the nasty inconvienent obstacles to that called humans rights).

Ideology and control by implication rather than explicit directive is very much whats going on now.

If you want a good point of reference for the Capitol Building Riots, have a look at the Reichstag Fire in 1933 BEFORE Hitler had dictorial control. The event was used PRECISELY to kill off opposition and accountability and to kill the last strains of democracy.

At this point in Hitlers career, I think parallels of where Trump is now are not so far wide of the mark.

I do think its possible thats exactly what the aim and ambition was to do. They wanted to stop the vote and the certification of the new president. They wanted a 'symbolic' attack on a state institution. There were numerous claims that it was someone else who did it.

Trump has widely tried to use executive power to bypass other checks and balances rather than go through Congress too.

USA Covid deaths currently running at 9/11
every day
Sad

The President of the country could have promoted actions that would have MASSIVELY reduced that death toll
but he did not

Dongdingdong · 13/01/2021 15:40

George Bush Jr's foreign policy was far more "dangerous" than anything Donald Trump has done.

snowliving · 13/01/2021 15:41

Not completely sure what the point of playing Top Trumps The Fascist version actually is Dong.

It is surely clear that a man who attempts to overthrow the Presidential election by inciting a mob to storm the seat of government is extremely dangerous.
Even more so if they are the current President and resistant to the transfer of power as ordained by the ballot box.

Dongdingdong · 13/01/2021 15:41

Are you actually serious? Confused The man started World War Two FFS, what more do you want?

If you are not sure what republic, why are you arguing about American politics? You are on the internet, use it to educate yourself first.
PhoebeSnow · 13/01/2021 15:42

@Yohoheaveho

Pelosi said her young staffers knew to barricade the door, turn out the lights, and be silent, because they learned it in school 🥺
This incident has one positive imo , now the members of the US government know how young students feel every time some sick bastard takes a gun to school. Although the tragedy of Sandy Hook didn’t change anything did it?
Furries · 13/01/2021 15:43

@Roussette

The impeachment hearing is taking place now. The excuses the Republicans are making are gobsmacking. They want to heal. Why could they not have 'healed' when the election result was called?
I’ve only just come back to the thread. Which channels are showing this? Thread seems to be moving faster than ever!
FrankieStein402 · 13/01/2021 15:43

What republic
The US?

US Covid casualties in less than a year have exceeded all US casualties in the 4 years of WW2 and are currently running at ~60k more than those in Europe/North Africa. The final total is likely to approach 500k excess deaths - more than double the WW2 Europe/North Africa total.

So there is easily a case for rump having more impact on US lives than Hitler.

RedToothBrush · 13/01/2021 15:43

@Dongdingdong

And yet... he didn't destroy the world, despite spending the last four years as the most powerful man on the planet. An inconvenient truth to you lot I know!

Just because he hasn't doesn't mean he can't.

It does mean that the Constitution of the USA that was written to PREVENT it happening has worked.

However the very arguement being debated in the Senate today is how the President has worked in a way which is unconstitutional. And it remains to be seen if he will be punished for it.

THAT IS THE ENTIRE POINT

If the constitution is undermined or fails you lose the defence to prevent these things from happening. The constitution IS the mechanism of accountability in the US.

See my point about the Reichstage fire. Remember Hitler was ELECTED. He then removed the checks and balances over a number of years.

Trump wasnt reelected. But only by a narrow margin. And he COULD yet stand again and be in a position to put a wrecking ball to the constitution in 4 years time if he were to win.

We must recognise this, even if Trump disappears in a puff of smoke never to reappear on 21st January.

We must realise how close he has come to destroying the constitution and how so many Republicans are prepared to sit by idly ignoring and enabling him when he has acted unconstitutionally.

Go read a fucking history book.
snowliving · 13/01/2021 15:44

I enjoy living in the USA but it is sad to note that the first time my dc did an intruder drill when in primary school they were stressed for a couple of days.
Now in middle school they hardly notice them.
It is very normalized.

Dongdingdong · 13/01/2021 15:45

If you are not sure what republic, why are you arguing about American politics? You are on the internet, use it to educate yourself first.

Eyeroll. I questioned what republic because it doesn't make any sense. Stating that Osama bin Laden united the USA makes zero sense, so that poster must have been talking about a different republic.

RedToothBrush · 13/01/2021 15:46

In fact, would posters here like to suggest a recommended reading list for BigDong to go read?

I can think of a few.

Dongdingdong · 13/01/2021 15:47

Go read a fucking history book.

You're the one who needs to read a "fucking history book" if you truly think Hitler didn't start WW2 Hmm

Dongdingdong · 13/01/2021 15:48

I actually find this comment highly offensive TBH.
