To treat myself

I'm due to give birth in the next few months - it's my first baby.

I've spent most of my pregnancy trying really hard to save as much as possible for the baby, getting things prepared. I've bought myself a few nice bits and bobs of maternity wear, but to be honest ended up mainly in PJ's or lounge wear due to lockdown.

Anyway, now that it's getting closer I'm thinking of treating myself to a big box of nice things from myself...mainly for that first month/few weeks after birth.

So far I've thought about a nice perfume, PJ's/nighties, maybe some bath stuff (if I'm allowed to get baths?), maybe a book or two. I don't want to go overboard and I don't want DH to choose things, because as lovely as he is he won't know exactly what I need. Although I'm not sure I do at the moment!

I am however struggling with the idea of wasting money - am I unreasonable to get some nice bits, or will it be a total waste?

If I'm not unreasonable, is my list crap or missing something major? I've got an older sister with kids but she didn't bother as she was gifted all kinds - I'm not a fan of even virtual baby showers so it's on me!

100% you should treat yourself if you can afford it! I had a baby a couple of months ago and I'm so glad I sorted things out such as some nice pjs, home cooked batch meals and nice body creams because as much as you get a lovely baby out of it, you are still a person in your own right and pregnancy/having a baby takes it out of you!

Congratulations on your little one! I'm glad doing this worked for you, too - this is exactly what I think I needed to hear! I have a history of anxiety, and although I'm fine these days for the most part, I do understand how things like PND can spring up unexpectedly. Obviously, nice things can't change brain chemistry, but I want to try to negate as much negativity as possible by making sure that I'm comfortable, with as little external stress as possible!

I think I'm definitely going to get my fair share of really stinky bath bombs and floral perfume in! 😂 And if I can't eat stinky cheese, I can at least get through a good pile of books!

@FolkyFoxFace good call Grin And a really good quality massage oil and someone to massage it in - even better!
I loved my peppermint leg /foot lotion too.

FolkyFoxFace · 13/01/2021 21:56

@Suzi888 You've just reminded me that I have an unopened massage bar from Lush - I'll stink to high heaven, but that's tomorrow's plan now. 😂 Peppermint lotion sounds lovely! Which brand did you use? I used to love a good peppermint shower scrub, made my skin all tingly fresh!

A feckload of chocolate and a cleaner to do a few hours a week.

Decide what should go in your emergency bag by cuddling a pillow on the sofa and pretending it’ll wake up or object loudly if you move or remove your boob. What do you wish you had within arms reach? Only one arm, mind. No knitting or reading big hardbacks. Also, learn how to eat one handed. Hold the pillow with the other one. For advanced skills, get your DH to pour some warm sour milk over your shoulder every so often.

My top tip would be to splash out on some really pretty nursing bras. Mine were horrid, greying, cotton monstrosities and after a while I found them really depressing. But back then I couldn’t afford the lovely ones from Hot Milk, etc.

FolkyFoxFace · 13/01/2021 22:19

@YesPleaseMary I like how chocolate is becoming a theme. I think I'll start stocking up now. 😁 Ha! Stale milk aside (although I should probably get used to the smell, and the crap in my hair), that's a brilliant idea! May as well start honing my skills now, too!

@RUOKHon I can definitely see nice nursing bras lifting my spirits. My usual size doesn't fit me anymore and I've been putting off getting new ones, so I think I'll bite the bullet and see what's out there. I didn't even know Hot Milk existed - the ones I've been heart heartedly been looking at were really plain and frumpy!

I used the mama mio range, including the oils and have no stretch marks. I did smell like a peppermint though Grin and a secret saviours bell band.
I do love a Lush bomb!
