To think rapid weightloss in the morbidly obese isn't an accurate representation of weightloss for most people?

I'm currently 10st 7 and want to get down to 9.5st, I'm overweight but not obese.

I've been making changes to my diet and lifestyle for a little over two weeks and giving it my all.

Daily walks for at least an hour, sometimes two hours.

No sugar in my hot drinks and I've switched from whole milk to skimmed.

I have cut out all unhealthy snacks like chocolate and crisps which I was eating most days.

I'm eating smaller portions at dinner time.

Drinking alot more water.

Doing some light cardio at home in addition to the long walks.

I have lost a measly 0.5lb, if that.

Meanwhile on a weight loss group on Facebook there are women bragging about having lost 12lbs in a bloody week.

The people who are posting this type of loss are, in their own admission, morbidly obese.

Therefore, in my opinion, such losses aren't representative of the reality of dieting for most people.

It's demotivating to work so hard on something and see such a miniscule loss then to read somebody has lost 12lb and done so well by "just cutting out takeaways"

The healthy max is about 2lb.

You're better going slow and steady.

People who crash 12lb in a week won't keep that up its like running a race "yay I'm at the end" and immediately back to thier old habits and its all over again.

You're not on a temporary diet you are changing your behaviour for the rest of your life

OwlinaTree · 12/01/2021 22:56

Are you eating the exercise calories on top of the 1,200? 700 exercise calories seems a lot, what exercise did you do?

Halfadamnlb · 12/01/2021 22:56

I'm 27, I drink 3-4 cups of ovaltine per day which is quite filling but not high in calories. Other than that, I haven't indulged in chocolate or crisps for two weeks now and I used to eat both fairly often.

I also suspect I have some hormonal issues going on which may be contributing to the struggle to lose weight.

I had a 5km run and only burned 264 cals.

Slim fast and other diet aids are as processed as everything else, cut out anything processed and eat real food, remove your milk intake entirely by drinking green/white tea and try and drink at least 2 litres of water a day

The more overweight you are, the easier it is to lose weight, ONLY to begin with!

When you get down to a very normal size (which 10 stone is, unless you’re about 4ft) weight always becomes more of a challenge to lose. It’s a well known fact! If you were to lose 12lbs in a week there’d be something very wrong. However 12lbs on someone of 20 stone, to begin with, would be pretty normal.

However the next week they’d not lose 12lbs. They’d probably lose about 5lbs. And it would carry on being less and less until they reached a normal weight.

Walked my DS to nursery and came home - 1.6 miles both ways

30 min walk to the shops for the weekly shop, back home

Back to nursery to collect DS, walked back again.

Nothing extreme just alot of walking. On days I don't have to go anywhere I do a bit of YouTube led cardio at home.

Comparing yourself to others is the root to misery

Concentrate on your own journey, you are doing this for you not Anyone else

Who cares if Joan lost 12lbs? Good for her but no impact on you?

Halfadamnlb · 12/01/2021 23:06

This is today's generated calorie loss from exercise according to My fitness pal.

I walk at a moderate pace, not briskly but faster than a leisurely stroll iykwim.

I'm clearly going wrong somewhere so I welcome the tips, thank you.

Why not be pleased for severely obese people losing weight rather than jealous and resentful of them when they are in a far worse position than you and will have a much longer road to get to a healthy weight if they ever manage it. Seems a strange thing to be cross about.

Halfadamnlb · 12/01/2021 23:08

It says 1519 for food but 700 of that burned off with exercise.

On days where I've eaten much less food but still done a fair amount of exercise I get notifications saying I haven't eaten enough.

Gobbeldegook · 12/01/2021 23:10

You need to do cardio to burn fat. A brisk walk is better than a leisurely stroll.
Rather than focusing on weight focus on shape, cause if you're building muscle your weight might stay the same even though your tummy/arms/legs are toning.
Yoga and Pilates are good if you're new to excersising and once you get stronger you can start adding dumbbells into your poses. You will be able to enjoy far more treats guilt free with a decent fitness regime.
I keep treats to a weekend. Cut out takeaways all together but I like cake too much to give that up.
I'm 10stone and started 3 months ago. I've not lost any weight but my shape is completely different. No saggy mummy tummy or flabby arms and thighs anymore.

Is MYP giving inaccurate calculations then? If so that would make sense.

I'm not entering calories lost from exercise myself, MYP is generating the result based on how long I spent walking and the speed at which I did it.

Exercise calories are rubbish

I don’t calorie count but at the very least I know that you should totally ignore ‘calories burned’ through exercise

SunsetSenora · 12/01/2021 23:10

The fact is that bodies are very complex and work at different rates - there was an experiment where people were all given 1000 calories over their base need (individually calculated for them by doctors) for a month. At the end the weight gain ranged from 3lbs to 15lbs. With the same amount of extra. So, any movement down is helpful and should be appreciated. Good luck with it.

OwlinaTree · 12/01/2021 23:12

That's a lot of walking, you are doing well. I don't calorie count myself so I can't advise on calories. Your evening meals sounds similar to mine but I have 3 scrambled eggs for breakfast and soup and fruit for lunch. That keeps me going. I'm around 9st, just over at the mo as it's just been Christmas!

Candyfloss99 · 12/01/2021 23:17

Don't count in your exercise on mfp. Just stick to 1200 a day.

craftbeer · 12/01/2021 23:19

Exactly this. You can turn off the exercise thingy.
KihoBebiluPute · 12/01/2021 23:19

Could you get some ankle weights to make your walk more work for your muscles?

Stronger muscles burn more energy than weaker muscles. You don't burn that many calories with a half hour workout but building up your muscles means you are burning more energy 24 hours a day.

Halfadamnlb · 12/01/2021 23:20

I've been taking the exercise calories calculation as gospel Blush

I'm very new to dieting, until now I've never needed to lose weight. I had two children 15 months apart and then lockdown happened so I was eating more and moving alot less.

I'm taking on board the feedback here thank you Smile

My sister and I were both the same weight. I lost masses very quickly through trauma, basically I didnt eat for 6 weeks and now (2 years later) I have no idea how to eat normally so usually only eat when the hunger pains are too big to ignore. Usually once every 2 or 3 days. I have now come to accept that I have an eating disorder.

In the same period, my sister has done it "properly" and got very pissed off that she has dropped 2 dress sizes (22 to an 18) and I have gone from a 20/22 to a 10. But I have no energy, saggy skin, droppy tits and a severe Vit B & D deficiency.

Keep doing it your way.

wowfudge · 12/01/2021 23:21

Ignore the exercise calories for starters. You've lost half a pound which is a good start. Eat more veg - it fills you up and is good for you.

Measure everything you eat and drink. Don't guess. Is a "small cup" accurate? I measure in millilitres.

Halfadamnlb · 12/01/2021 23:22

I'm going to have a look on the app now and turn off the exercise counter.

Also regarding ankle weights yes I certainly could get some if they'll make a difference.

I've been contemplating 'boxercise' with DH at home too. He said he's happy to help.

Boxercise is a good idea.

Every time you weigh yourself and you havent dropped a pound, kick his head in.

Wont help you lose weight but it will help relieve the frustration :o

It's the amount of carbohydrate you're eating, not the calories, that matter. What does your app say your carb count for the day is?
