Refused me job ..aibu to feel like giving up?

I'm 33 and my job history is mainly customer service.
In the last 11 years my mum had cancer and has passed away in September.
I kept taking breaks in my employment to look after her.
My last job was 2016
I applied for a call centre and got offered the job.
Told them my previous history but couldn't remember exact dates.
They did a Experian employment check and refused the offer.
Saying there were too many gaps in my employment.
I feel really really low.
In a ideal world my mum wouldn't have been ill and I wouldn't have had to keep leaving jobs.
Will I ever get a job again ?
@NoOneOwnsTheRainbow how exactly am I unreliable ?
How does caring for my mum make me unreliable
It's not the reason for the absences,
it's the fact that the dates you have don't match those from Experian.

reddeadalive · 12/01/2021 15:19

@titchy how would Experian even know if my dates weren't correct tho?
Surely I know my dates better than Experian ?

You need to nail down proper dates (even Month and Year for both start and end will help).

hellasciously · 12/01/2021 15:20

Experian is just your credit score. Do you have a low score?

reddeadalive · 12/01/2021 15:20

@hellasciously last time I checked it was 732
I don't know what that means if I'm honest

Otherpeoplesteens · 12/01/2021 15:21

Experian will know when you've had regular paychecks coming in, and from where.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 12/01/2021 15:21

When you will be looking at dates, look for start and end day too. Ridiculously some applications I encountered wanted it. I have a document with all dates and addreses in it. It makes it easy to just copy and paste or use for application.

How
SchrodingersImmigrant · 12/01/2021 15:22

And most importantly how would that work with cash payments, rather than bank payment

Why don't you look at the link @NoOneOwnsTheRainbow posted. You could check your own data to see if it matches your recollection.

ScottishStottie · 12/01/2021 15:22

Experian will have access to exact dates etc due to tax code changes and that sort of thing i imagine. So theirs will be more accurate than yours.

titchy · 12/01/2021 15:23

HMRC? Regardless of whether you're paid in cash or bank transfer, your employer still needs to pay your tax and NI.
reddeadalive · 12/01/2021 15:24

None of my other previous jobs checked like this.
I gave names /addresses /work emails /hr etc
It feels a bit like a invasion of privacy

An inaccurate CV does not inspire confidence. for example if you cannot remember (and did not take note of) your absence dates, then it is indicative that perhaps you might forget to turn up to work. ooops I forgot i was due to work today, sorry. that sort of message.

you need to get your life admin sorted out. then you will be better able to inspire confidence that you will do a good job.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 12/01/2021 15:25

There is no way a company can go and have an access to my HMRC data without my knowledge and approval.

hellasciously · 12/01/2021 15:26

What Is Included in Your Credit Report?
A credit reportt_ is a record of your history of managing and repaying debt. It's the basis for your credit scores, and one of the tools lenders and other companies use when deciding whether to do business with you and, if so, on what terms.

Experian won't know your income of when you worked and didn't work etc. Your credit score would be down as fair so not to bad.

reddeadalive · 12/01/2021 15:27

So can anyone explain how Experian do this employment check ?
The type my name
Joe bloggs
And all my history pops up ?

OP, people are trying to help you, and all you are doing is showing your hackles and snapping.
Get your dates sorted, explain the caring and then prospective employers know you haven’t been in jail or working illegally doing god knows what. It’s an incredibly tough job market out there atm.
Or if you just want to rant, go ahead.

PinkTonic · 12/01/2021 15:29

Experian isn’t just credit scoring, they do background checks as well. Other employment screening services also exist and many companies use them. This can include credit checks, DBS and employment references, even qualifications if you’ve put them on your CV. You must have signed a form agreeing to the checks. At a minimum a prospective employer will want transparency about employment gaps so you must be prepared to give accurate dates as they will be checked.

Dg390 · 12/01/2021 15:31

Should be working ! But stepping in to reassure. If you got this far with a job offer - and then had this issue you will absolutely get a job Smile as you come over well! Agree with others - you need a cv with a start and end date (which references month / year). Most important for employers is they see what you have done and you can be accurate (and if you are over 30 no one can remember this stuff without detail). And then you describe the gap as eg “acting as full time carer for my elderly mother”. Some employers won’t like that but you won’t want to work for them ! And you can always add “caring responsibilities came to a end at the end of this time” No one with a grain of common sense will then ask any more. Not having gaps
Is good for demonstrating general reliability and for safeguarding as well as finance. Hang on in there and you will get something but it
May take time. And speaking from
Experience it isn’t fun!

Dg390 · 12/01/2021 15:32

Also most employers don’t do Experian so don’t be spooked !

Dg390 · 12/01/2021 15:33

And period from “September 2020 to current” is “job hunting”. Which given there is a pandemic on is not going to worry most employers

Otherpeoplesteens · 12/01/2021 15:35

Experian offer an affordability check to businesses looking to evaluate individual consumers. Part of that is Income Verification, or, where they might not have the exact data, Income Estimation (which might be derived from other financial information they hold on you such as your account balances, payment statuses, previous credit applications, or modelled based on what they know about similar people).

The data won't be within your Experian Credit Report, but they will have it.

A huge percentage of people lie on their CV. Inflate job titles, claim qualifications they don't have, exaggerate responsibilities, stretch employment periods to cover gaps.

Employers' have to safeguard their business and profits and not take someone who in a worst case scenario could be a serial fraudster, or who might just be a bit unreliable and not up to the job.

Of COURSE they check.
