Walked ds to school (keyworker) and decided to walk up to the local supermarket about 1.5 miles away.Im wanting to lose a bit of Xmas weight and I really enjoy walking.Noticed a black SUV passing which then reversed to come onto the road I was on, Man asked if I was going to supermarket or new build estate and did I want a lift? I said no,he then asked again.He drove off but now I feel a bit nervous out and about.Things like that aren't common where I live and I don't know any man who would offer a stranger a lift.Would you be suspicious or just think he was a chancer trying to chat up a woman?

I'm a little concerned that even one person has said that this man may have just have been being nice. Nice men do not offer women help who do not need it. Its definitely a creepy thing to do.

Yep. Plus as others have said, Covid makes it extra weird.

janj2301 · 11/01/2021 15:16

pre covid my husband always offered lifts to old, disabled, people with young children especially in the cold/wet, many refused but many accepted, he never minded either way.

Fembot123 · 11/01/2021 15:37

I also had a man pull over to ask me directions but then he asked about my underwear so I walked off, he drove to the end of the road and opened the car door and was masturbating furiously, I couldn’t stop laughing at him but I did report it as it was right near a school

AriesTheRam · 11/01/2021 15:38

@janj2301 I'm none of those things it was really creepy tbh

OMG, did you report him to the police? This happened to my sister while out riding around the quiet back lanes. She galloped to the middle of a field and called the police. They were brilliant. They were there in minutes and took it very seriously. They alerted all cars in the area and several units went out looking for him. Sadly they didn’t catch him but it was considered sexual assault and treated seriously. She now wears a bodycam when she rides out on her own.
WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 11/01/2021 17:48

@contrmary

Might have just been being nice.
What?

Young woman walking, not struggling with anything. In a pandemic where we shouldn't be getting in cars with people outside if our household?

Nice?

For the live of god is there no reach too far?

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 11/01/2021 17:51

@ZoeTurtle

NEVER GO TO A SECONDARY LOCATION

Very weird. I've sometimes thought of offering someone a lift when it's raining and they're standing at a bus stop looking forlorn, but I've never actually done it.

Pre pandemic I've often offered people a lift, but only if they look like they might appreciate one. Not a young woman comfirtabky walking along a normal street, not struggling with anything

...and definitely
Not
In a
Pandemic.

2bazookas · 11/01/2021 18:15

That would be very common where I live, even from total strangers. I don't think I've ever refused :-) but do what you feel comfortable with.

He may be a new neighbour who recognised you.

Fembot123 · 11/01/2021 18:17

No just to the school, I was only 16 and just thought he was pathetic.

Sideorderofchips · 11/01/2021 18:18

I had this once. Happily walking home after a night out up a hill. Car pulled along side and I was offered a lift. He was very insisitant as I was refusing and then drove off in a huff when I pulled my phone out

FiveFootTwoEyesOfBlue · 11/01/2021 18:19

I think the detail that he actually reversed into the road you were in to speak to you makes it more suspicious, that and asking you twice. I would not be comfortable with that and would possibly report to 101.

Tumblebugsjump · 11/01/2021 18:21

My husband was this man, got bk on last train into two , recognised a neighbour who lives opposite, offered her a lift back to our town and she ran away 😬

Tumblebugsjump · 11/01/2021 18:22

Into town that should have said- she obviously didn't recognise him. I do like to remind him of this every now and again just to make myself laugh 😆

thosetalesofunexpected · 11/01/2021 18:30

@ancientgran
How very Disturbing/and sad that that where you were growing up it was part of Norm to have kerb krawlers come up to ,
Even when you were heavily pregnant.!
Some men are real sick Bastards.!😬

AriesTheRam · 11/01/2021 18:32

I'm really glad I reported.A policeman or an operator rang me back after I'd done it online

@Biffbaff

Was that Rose/Fred west the landlord who gave you a lift,with his heavily pregnant wife then?😕

That wasn't me! It was a pp. I didn't get the reference. Bit weird to imitate a victim like that and imply they were stupid... But anything goes on here.

ancientgran · 11/01/2021 20:38

@thosetalesofunexpected Thanks, I know it is awful but of course that was just how it was and seemed normal to me. Here I am nearly 60 years later and I still get stick off friends who say I ignore them when they wave at me. The lesson of not looking at passing cars because punters will think it's an invitation for business is a hard lesson to forget. Although the chances of anyone thinking an almost 70 year old would be looking for business is mad but like I said these lessons are hard to unlearn.

Francescaisstressed · 11/01/2021 21:22

This happened to a friend in university, and unfortunately there was a witness's appeal a few days later as someone ahd been assaulted, for which they then came forward. I would ring 101 to be safe, but ultimately it could have been someone who recognised you who you didn't, could be a man trying his luck or could be something more suspicious. Make sure your walks/runs aren't the same place and time everyday for a while.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 11/01/2021 21:51

@AriesTheRam

I'm glad that you reported it. Do you think they took it seriously (when they rang you back)?

You did the right thing not going home. The last thing you want is him knowing where you live.

AriesTheRam · 12/01/2021 10:41

@WitchesBritches yes they took it seriously they said I did the right thing reporting

That's good. You may have prevented someone else going through the same thing, or worse - if they weren't so aware.

How are you feeling today?
