Sea swims, runs and cycle rides

Besswess88 · 11/01/2021 00:47

I don’t need to see it.

I live by the sea and it’s suddenly become fashionable (because there is FUCK ALL else to do) to become a fucking butter and go into the sea every day sans wetsuit.

Not only this but to post it every fucking day on SM, one friend posts her husbands (he’s in his 60s so seriously may have a heart attack) and the other evening posted an apology for not posting that mornings swim.

I don’t fucking care.

OP posts:

It's exhilarating.

(If you're going to do it, please research how to make it safe, especially with the low temperatures at the moment)

dontdisturbmenow · 11/01/2021 08:10

Yes I could hide them but that’s not the point is it? Why why do people post this shit on a daily basis
Mmm, calling it shit...you are very aggressive about it, why?

Silvercatowner · 11/01/2021 08:11

Some people treat FB like a diary. You don't have to read what they are posting.

CaptainMyCaptain · 11/01/2021 08:13

If you don't like SM come off it yourself or just unfollow the friends you find boring. Simple.

Ineedalargeone · 11/01/2021 08:16

I have a friend who posts her sea dip pics every day. She likes attention. I guess it doesn't hurt really. Others run and post pictures. Others walk and post where they walk. Some stay close to home and some travel and walk.
I scroll on by or avoid it I don't want to see it.

It is better than the endless selfies with mass filters when people want to be told how gorgeous they are...although I also scroll past I was giving a comparison.

Indoctro · 11/01/2021 08:19

I love trail running. I like in Scotland and I will often post photos I've took on my run. I love the countryside and I guess I enjoy sharing it with other

I hope my Facebook friends don't find me really annoying Confused

Here is photos I posted yesterday from my run

OP just don't follow them or look at social media. I agree that some people post far too much, and indeed it seems to me placing them at greater risk of burglary if what they do each day at a certain time is posted on social media.

Winterwoollies · 11/01/2021 08:22

@yankeedoodledandee

Why why do people post this shit on a daily basis.

Better than the shit you are posting Grin

I concur.
MarieIVanArkleStinks · 11/01/2021 08:26

I guess it has the same effect as a plunge pool after the sauna. With the obvious difference that after plunging you can go back in the sauna and warm up again!

The sea would unfortunately necessitate a drive for me but we have a nearby lake that has long since winked at me in the sun and screamed 'drysuit! ...'

Shock Grin at the 'bluetits'.

ScrapThatThen · 11/01/2021 08:26

I think it's best to post these daily ones to the lots of large supportive private swimming and running Facebook groups (so it doesn't post to your friends). YANBU. But the wooly hats are recommended and part of the outdoor swim fashion scene definitely.

BrummyMum1 · 11/01/2021 08:29

Hasn’t SM always been a monologue of boring shit people do? If you’re expecting to find some interesting reading, step away from SM and pick up a book.

Brefugee · 11/01/2021 08:43

Oh god. Why do you have people on SM that you obviously don't like? just snooze them for 30 days, unfollow, unfriend, unfriend & block or whatever floats your boat (although probably you'd be better just giving up on SM?)

It is not up to anyone else to tell someone how to use their own social media.

WinstonmissesXmas · 11/01/2021 08:54

It’s so tedious! No one cares if you ran half a mile round the local fields, Nancy! Attention seeking bollocks. Ignore!

Keratinsmooth · 11/01/2021 09:43

Everyone is winter swimming in the river here. It’s full of cow shit?! I don’t understand the fascination

MaskingForIt · 11/01/2021 10:23

@Iris27

Wild swimming in cold water is supposed to do wonders for mental health
Why do people who do it go on about how bad their mental health is then?

It’s like taking diet advice from a fat person.

GreenlandTheMovie · 11/01/2021 10:38

I do a lot of competitive sport and know many elite athletes. They are almost universally modest on sm. But it's a well known phenomenon that born again amateur athletes (those who take it up later in life) are by far the most likely to bore you rigid with tales of their exceedingly dull exploits. I dont mean nice photos of their route scenery.

I mean the ones that post about every single training session on sm in a repetitive, formulaic way. Many, many examples which I won't bore with. But I saw a cracker last night. Friend request from a man I don't know whose FB is entirely public. He seems to post daily about his vegan meals and training exploits. In immense, mind numbing detail, with at least 3 photographs of said meal. Every. Single. Day. And he reminds everyone of how good they are and how great his cooking is. He is very, very pleased with himself, appears to be single and C.A.F.

The level of self obsession is mind numbing. Naturally, he is also an open water swimmer/triathlete UP oh yes, stand up paddle board is as fashionable as open water swimming.

I like sport a lot, but even I find this laughable. Its so obviously trying too hard to create a certain image. People that have to try that hard are invariably not. Very. Good.

FunkBus · 11/01/2021 11:53

@GreenlandTheMovie you sound obnoxious. Just let people like the things they like and enjoy a new hobby that they're enthusiastic about.

mellongoose · 12/01/2021 20:16

@Bookworming

* Every school run, I go past our local little beach and see people in there every day. I've never seen them before*

So? What's the problem with that?

Openly feeling bitter that a) I can't get in and b) if I could get in I would no longer have it to myself!
mellongoose · 12/01/2021 20:18

Lighthearted 👆

scentedgeranium · 13/01/2021 17:03

@mellongoose i really feel you could live near me with your user name and mention of the beach. The swimmers and paddle boarders are quite a tribe aren't they though?

GeordieGreigsButtButtZoom · 13/01/2021 17:04

Well, like you said, there's fuck all else to do. Unfollow if you can't simply scroll.

Emmie12345 · 13/01/2021 17:09

Not heard of Wim Hof op?

Mowly75 · 13/01/2021 17:11

@Besswess88

I was at the beach yesterday and there were two ladies getting into the sea wearing swimming costumes. One of them wore a bobble hat into the actual sea.

Surely a swimming cap is more sensible?

Bobble hat keeps your head warm in the obviously freezing sea.

I live by the sea too, am working up the courage to go in myself. Never swum beyond October before. Cold water supposed to be great for MH. And yes it's suddenly extremely popular; stay off SM if you don't like it. Mute them. Whatever. SM is full of smug f*ery, surely this is obvious.

praepondero · 13/01/2021 17:13

OP, I feel your pain.

frippit · 13/01/2021 17:17

I've been swimming every day sans wetsuit for several years.
All of a sudden I'm not swimming on my bil, there's loads of the buggers!
Lockdown has got people doing all sorts of things they'd never dreamt of doing in normal times. It's definatly a boost for your mental health as are all things outdoors.
I think they post on social media because they can't quite believe what lockdown has got them doing.
