Sea swims, runs and cycle rides

I don’t need to see it.

I live by the sea and it’s suddenly become fashionable (because there is FUCK ALL else to do) to become a fucking butter and go into the sea every day sans wetsuit.

Not only this but to post it every fucking day on SM, one friend posts her husbands (he’s in his 60s so seriously may have a heart attack) and the other evening posted an apology for not posting that mornings swim.

I don’t fucking care.

OP posts:

Mmm, what could you possibly do about ensuring you don't see posts from the people whose activities have got you frothing so much. Wouldn't it be amazing if social media platforms had an "unfollow" button you could press and then "poof!" no more horrid offensive posts about your friends getting more exercise than you......

SusannaSpider · 11/01/2021 06:31

Burns a hell of a lot of calories even if you just bob about and don't put much effort in.

Really?! That's interesting, not sure if I could steel myself to do it though. I live 5mins from the sea, but it was 3⁰ here yesterday, and I find swimming even in the summer too cold. But now I'm going to Google how many calories!

Gracelaced · 11/01/2021 06:43

Good on them. Wild swimming is amazing. It makes one feel alive.

Peanutbutterblood · 11/01/2021 06:43

I quite like to see pictures of people doing exercise but I hate when people post their strava stats. One friend posts their strava runs on facebook and Instagram and I just dont get it. That's what strava is for, leave it there

Iris27 · 11/01/2021 06:48

Wild swimming in cold water is supposed to do wonders for mental health

FunkBus · 11/01/2021 06:50

So just block strava from fb? If you don't want to see it, you don't have to. You're the oddball here, not them.

I do this. Grin But in my defence I have running/gym friends on my fb that don't have Strava and we like to encourage/motivate each other in ways that people don't on Strava. One of our gym group really struggles with motivation and has said seeing my runs keeps him going to get out and do his. So I'll keep doing it.
ivykaty44 · 11/01/2021 06:55

The odd post from someone sea swimming, fine but daily photos on SM is self indulgent

ivykaty44 · 11/01/2021 06:58

If I’ve done a long ride say 100 miles then I’d want to share with my other friend who are not on Strava, so no I won’t leave a particularly hilly route or king route on Strava

scentedgeranium · 11/01/2021 07:01

I kind of get what you mean. A friend does the same. We live by a coastal village and she's always there with selfies in the water with a sunset or sunrise. waving her bikini top above her head with her shoulders just above the water line. Occasionally I don't mind. But eery day, and I start to feel she's saying her life is better than mine!
On a related note tho we weren't allowed in the last lockdown. The sea is TEEMING with people at the moment tho!

Skipsurvey · 11/01/2021 07:02

just hide them on your social media.
job done

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 11/01/2021 07:05

Why not? People are fed up. Good for them finding a challenge.

You sound dull and bitter.

Icanseegreenshoots · 11/01/2021 07:26

I would imagine anyone swimming in the sea without a wet suit in January could be fighting a silent but serious mental health condition, the cold water shock is known to help with depression and anxiety.

Perhaps consider being a little more compassionate op? Mental health for some people is levelling out at rock bottom.

Mute your SM and protect yourself, but don't berate others for finding ways to cope.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 11/01/2021 07:32

I love that open water swimming is becoming popular and love seeing pictures of people's swims. Makes me jealous though because I live a long way from the sea. You are being a misery.

mellongoose · 11/01/2021 07:36

Hear hear OP! I live near the sea and usually swim in it a lot. However, I'm a key worker and have school age children so I don't seem to have any time in daylight.

Every school run, I go past our local little beach and see people in there every day. I've never seen them before 🙄

megletthesecond · 11/01/2021 07:41

Sea swimming is so good for you. Stops inflammation IIRC. They need a bobble hat to keep the heat in.

Nonamesavail · 11/01/2021 07:42

I've swum in sea year round for years. Never posted it on SM. Recently redeleted sm for same reason though.

chrispenrallt1 · 11/01/2021 07:48

I saw someone swimming in our little inner harbour on Saturday . I thought it was a seal at first! But no ‘‘twas a lady! I cheered her, wrapped up as I was in a duvet coat bobble hat and scarf. No wet suit for her.

Bookworming · 11/01/2021 07:50

Every school run, I go past our local little beach and see people in there every day. I've never seen them before*

So? What's the problem with that?

DuzzyFuck · 11/01/2021 07:59

@Frolicinameadow

Is the dip in icy water supposed to be good for you? Loads doing it round my way and while I think fair play to them I have wondered if there are any benefits to it
There are loads of benefits to it, but starting at this time of year is a bad idea - our local press have even warned against it.

Loads of people round here sea swim and fair play to them. I'll get in on Christmas Day at the social splash about but that's my lot.

I'd rather see nice scenic sea swim pictures on SM than more bloody banana bread or stupid Tik-Tok dances anyday 🤷🏽‍♀️

Skipsurvey · 11/01/2021 08:00

i know people who do this
would a cold shower do the same thing?

however i know there are groups of ladies who call themselves Bluetits Grin
it is a sociable activity i understand.

LakieLady · 11/01/2021 08:02

My manager lives on the coast and she sea swims every day. She's done it for years.

She wears a winter wetsuit though, she's not completely mad.

AIMD · 11/01/2021 08:06

Yes lots of people do cold showers or cold baths to get the same effect. I’ve just started doing it and has found it starts my day really well. Others do it in the eve and say it helps them sleep.

On a bbc programme about immune systems this week they said it was good for the immune system too as the cold stimulate the lymphatic system.

CaptainMyCaptain · 11/01/2021 08:07

@AndcalloffChristmas

I have noticed an increase in sea swimming as the new thing. I guess people need to find things to do!
There is a lot of information about this around. It is supposed to have a lot of proven heallth benefits including for the brain. I don't intend doing it myself but admire those who do.
dontdisturbmenow · 11/01/2021 08:09

I much rather read about this sort of thing than those who post about their yet again drinking sessions and yet another unhealthy cooked meal.

At least the former are keeping healthy and are inspirational. The latter are the exact opposite.
