Who knew there was shopping basket security

Is it me or has this shopping basket etiquette always been in place 🤷‍♀️

I went shopping for a few bits on a local supermarket but as usual I forgot my bags but instead of wasting money & plastic I decided against buying a bag & didn’t fancy juggling my shopping to the car so I took a basket to my car, a security guard came charging after me telling me I wasn’t allowed to remove the basket, I told him I’m taking my shopping to my car & I would be returning it straight away.

I mean seriously I don’t want another plastic bag in the house let alone a big metal basket aibu to think this rule is crazy or is it an unspoken rule that I’ve never been informed of

In our village, people take the carts to their house, (and return them)

Iwantacookie · 11/01/2021 09:44

It's so annoying when you forget your bags and they start acting like your stealing the crown jewels it's a basket get over. Or dont make me faff around with £1 for a trolley.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 11/01/2021 09:49

You can take your basket out at my local Sainsburys. That may be because they often don't have bags though. They just ask you to leave the basket in the trolley park.

It’s your problem not theirs FFS. You are so entitled.
MrsLuciferMorningstar · 11/01/2021 09:53

😂😂 The other week we were in such a rush that we took the basket home with us rather than buying a bag. We shamefacedly snuck it back next time we were at the shop 😂😂

slashlover · 11/01/2021 09:54

@Familyshopper

😂😂 or maybe I’m just not the sort to steal anything & am too busy to give it any thought unlike some people who think they have some form of intelligence
Intelligent enough to remember their bags or put in place a way to remember.
Fizbosshoes · 11/01/2021 09:55

I bought a basket load of shopping at my local tesco metro (attached to the petrol station) I did take a shopping bag with me but left it in the car.
When I got to the checkout the guy asked if I needed a bag, and I realised Id left mine in the car and he said just take the basket to the car. I wouldn't have done unless he had told me to, and as its a petrol station I was obviously visible on cctv (not that Ive ever thought about stealing a basket!!)

Regularsizedrudy · 11/01/2021 10:13

“ How do you know it has always been a thing where does it tell you this ? ”

Common sense tells me to do this Hmm

beautyboxaddict · 11/01/2021 10:54

For those saying they’d willingly buy a basket, get yourself a trolley crate. I used to have one of the picnic type baskets but they’re not that big and I struggle to carry a full basket sometimes. My trolley crate is wheeled, massive and collapses down flat so takes up less space in the car boot.

Bananabuddy3 · 11/01/2021 10:56

Have you ever seen people walk off with the trolleys only to hit the invisible barrier which caused the wheels to stop? It’s like crashing into the wall. Sometimes quite amusing to watch

Iwantacookie · 11/01/2021 10:59

@candent yes how dare I want to get the goods I've just purchased to my car.Hmm

CecilyP · 11/01/2021 11:00

In the petrol station they can probably see your car from the checkout so not the same issue as with a supermarket.

How do you know it has always been a thing where does it tell you this.

The fact that you don’t see a stack of baskets piled high in the supermarket car park! You’re not the first person to forget your bag and you won’t be the last. Others will have popped into the supermarket for a few bits on their way past not having previously intended to shop. You really aren’t so special!

Cadent · 11/01/2021 11:34

@Iwantacookie

They're not stopping you getting the goods to your car., you can do that with bags or the trolley.

It sounds like ppl want their arse wiped for them as well.

helpfulperson · 11/01/2021 11:37

I always thought the 'your trolley wont work beyond this point' notices were fake until I tried to take one to the kwik fit where my car is. You have to drive through the supermarket car park to access it and the trolley came to a dead stop at the boundary.

Pukkatea · 11/01/2021 11:38

@Bananabuddy3 the window from my uni halls of residence looked out on to the path between campus and the supermarket. One of my favourite activities was watching the spot where the wheels locked on trolley stealers, and their reactions.

Yeah, maybe.

Its been 8 years since I worked in a shop with baskets and we didn't allow them out of the store. People steal them. We lost 72 in one day once. Had to security tag them all.

Banoffeepies · 11/01/2021 11:48

@Vitaminsss

I once asked an assistant who was spraying the trolleys down to spray my bag after shopping he looked at me gone out

Yes, because he’s not your servant hun. Spray your own bag - what makes you think anyone else wants to touch it?

Anyone putting shopping in carrier bags instead of a basket will arouse suspicion.

Do they? Pretty much all the major supermarkets have apps/handsets where you scan your items and immediately place them directly in your bag, later paying via the app/till without emptying your bag. I have exclusively used this system for a year and have never aroused suspicion.

Yep they definitely do in the shop I work at. Putting shopping into your own carrier bag is what 90% if the shoplifters do and someone will monitor it. We’re not a huge supermarket with apps though.
MaskingForIt · 11/01/2021 11:53

@Familyshopper

I’ve just tried to stop using the plastic kind but I tend to forget my bags when I just nip for a few bits when I do my main click & collect I usually have them but last lockdown I used to stick to the same few bags & dettol them after, I once asked an assistant who was spraying the trolleys down to spray my bag after shopping he looked at me gone out
Just keep some cloth bags in your car. If you’re worried about Covid chuck then in the washing machine now and then.
Crunchymum · 11/01/2021 11:54

My neighbours bring home a trolley (they do return it!)

We are 3 minute walk from two big supermarkets but it is harder to drive there than walk one way system then parking etc so they do this when they do their big shop.

I am a bit more classy, I take an empty pram Grin

LimeTreeGrove · 11/01/2021 11:59

I was wheeling a trolley out of a sainsburys the other day with an Argos package only in the trolley.(There's an Argos counter inside the Sainsbury's.) The trolley came to a sudden stop as I was leaving so I couldnt move it. The security man did something to allow me to move it again. Never experienced that before as dont usually go to that sainsbury's

QuestionableMouse · 11/01/2021 12:01

@GabsAlot

they are 10p pe bag unless you want the ibgger study ones
@gabsalot not in Morrisons they're not. The paper ones are 30p and the plastic ones are 50p or more.
MrsMiaWallis · 11/01/2021 12:01

Scan and shop
Trolley
Your own bags inside
Scan as you go, pay at special very quiet checkout.
No queuing, no packing and unpacking
Straight in back of car

Wouldn't shop any ither way now

FutureDuchessofHastings · 11/01/2021 12:02

God OP, you really do sound worse with every update. Nobody else is responsible for you remembering your shopping bags. If saving the environment really was that important to you, you'd remember them. Unless of course that was just an excuse to try to make yourself sound less entitled and oh so virtuous.

AmberAndAlexsMum · 11/01/2021 12:04

I remember in the 80s, working for the DHSS which is now DWP, and we had 'borrowed' a trolley from the local supermarket for collecting casepapers from the filing cabinets to be worked on ( obviously pre everything stored on computer).
We had cheap carpet and metal filing cabinets. As the trolley was wheeled around it picked up static electricity and eventually you would get a painful shock from it. 😀😀
Just goes to show even local government employees will happily borrow a trolley
