Who knew there was shopping basket security

Is it me or has this shopping basket etiquette always been in place 🤷‍♀️

I went shopping for a few bits on a local supermarket but as usual I forgot my bags but instead of wasting money & plastic I decided against buying a bag & didn’t fancy juggling my shopping to the car so I took a basket to my car, a security guard came charging after me telling me I wasn’t allowed to remove the basket, I told him I’m taking my shopping to my car & I would be returning it straight away.

I mean seriously I don’t want another plastic bag in the house let alone a big metal basket aibu to think this rule is crazy or is it an unspoken rule that I’ve never been informed of

I've done this before at a large Tesco, it wasn't an issue. I brought the basket right back.

Skipsurvey · 11/01/2021 07:04

same thing happened to me, annoyingly, luckily they kindly found me a trolley

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 11/01/2021 07:05

My local smaller Asda has a trolley ‘grid’ that works. The wheels do lock if it’s taken outside the immediate area. So now and then I do see one sitting there just as I enter that area, I think I’ll take it, whoops, wheels are locked.

Never knew about the basket thing!

Familyshopper · 11/01/2021 07:07

So do you not leave with your trolley then. ???

rwalker · 11/01/2021 07:36

They loose loads and they are expensive to replace. 30 years ago in when I worked in lil save we were told to get them of customers trying to leave with them.
You are completely in the wrong stop being so entitled and accept it .

diamondpony80 · 11/01/2021 07:39

I’ve never been stopped but I’ve taken a basket to the car once or twice for the same reason as you. Security must be pretty lax here because I’ve walked out with a scanner a few times too after forgetting to put it back. I always return them immediately of course.

Ineedalargeone · 11/01/2021 07:48

They probably thought you were one of 'those' people that steal the baskets.

Some even steal trolleys.

Sadly you see them in certain areas of society left all forlorn at the side of the road.

Walkaround · 11/01/2021 07:48

@Familyshopper - if you don’t realise it is easier to steal a basket that can fit inside the boot of your car than it is to steal a trolley that you have to walk all the way home with (or to the river if you didn’t actually want to keep the trolley for future use, which is far more likely the case with a trolley than a basket), you’re not very intelligent.

Bookworming · 11/01/2021 07:57

Yep, always been a thing.

wildraisins · 11/01/2021 08:01

As others have said, I imagine they are just trying to keep track of the baskets. People nick them all the time. No idea why because you don't see people walking around with them on the street? So it's very weird - I wonder what people actually do with them!

But yeah, just try harder to remember your own bags or otherwise get a trolley to take out to your car.

Ohdoleavemealone · 11/01/2021 08:05

Our local co op put a post out before xmas saying that 10 baskets had been stolen and they needed them back.

middleager · 11/01/2021 08:11

I knew.

Familyshopper · 11/01/2021 08:35

😂😂 or maybe I’m just not the sort to steal anything & am too busy to give it any thought unlike some people who think they have some form of intelligence

The ones at our coop the roll along the floor sort are security tagged. I guess it's a thing. I did work in an office where everyone's in tray was a supermarket basket. I was a temp and was told the owner had stolen them all when his wife wanted to order some office supplies, years before. Apparently for a while they had also had old front doors and old dining tables for desks.

MarthasGinYard · 11/01/2021 08:42

It's just not something I've ever thought of doing.

Don't think I've ever seen someone wandering out of tesco holding a laden wire shop basket

CaptainMyCaptain · 11/01/2021 08:44

@Fuss

In pre covid times I had a little collapsible picnic basket much like the ones in the picture. I'd take that in with me, use it to do my shopping then repack it at the checkout. I was never questioned about it at all and found it much easier than bags. Whether it was allowed or not I don't know but I always wondered why nobody else seemed to use their own baskets.
If you scan your own shopping at Sainsburys , as I do now, you just put it straight into your own bags.
KatherineJaneway · 11/01/2021 09:04

The large Tesco near me now has security tags on their baskets. People don't want to pay for a bag and can't be arsed to bring their own so simply walk off with the basket otherwise.

Other nearby Tesco was in the newspapers because all their baskets went missing when the carrier bag charge came in.

nannybeach · 11/01/2021 09:09

It's been a "thing" ever since I can remember, because people used to remove the baskets and not bother to take them back, there are signs up saying baskets are not to be removed from the store, some have a great big black security tag on them

starfishmummy · 11/01/2021 09:10

@Gwenhwyfar

YABU. Bring your own bag like everyone else. If you forge you have to pay for one. I don't have a car, can I take my basket home as long as I bring it back the next day? No, I have to spend 10p on a new bag just like you should be doing.
There was an elderly lady that used to use our Co-op. She would walk home with her shopping in onenof the store trollies, and one of the staff would go with her to take the trolley back tontje shop. Thats what I call customer service!!
peak2021 · 11/01/2021 09:12

Seems reasonable to me. I don't want higher prices to cover for lost baskets.

I'm sure OP you will remember your shopping bag next time, or keep one in the car boot just in case.

BlueSussex · 11/01/2021 09:27

I have an "old lady" trolley bag on wheels.

With cats on Grin

Fuss · 11/01/2021 09:28

@CaptainMyCaptain scan as you shop is a whole other thread....
Tried it probably half a dozen times now and it’s been faultless just once. I was selected for checks and on one occasion the system went down and I had to go to a checkout anyway. I gave up after that Grin

Plussizejumpsuit · 11/01/2021 09:29

I dint know how I know I guess its just one of those unspoken rules or ways of behaving. Its pretty obvious as you never see anyone doing it. But yes it is a thing.

I use my phone and it's worked so far.

Cadent · 11/01/2021 09:32

I’ve just tried to stop using the plastic kind

Are you always such a late adopter, OP? Most of us stopped using plastic bags years ago.
