More than 1800 people have contacted Dog’s trust to rehome unwanted lockdown puppies

And 1 in 4 people admitted they had impulse purchased a pet during lockdown.

Angry how the fuck do we get the message home that a puppy isn’t a toy and that people should think twice three, ten times before rushing out and buying one.

And obviously the increased prices aren’t a deterrent, although those are about greed anyway, because these people are buying them for £££ and then selling them on for the same prices.

Click here link didn't work, people should really do their research and think hard before getting a dog but tbh with more people working from home it probably has become a more viable option for many.
I am pretty sure the dogs trust dont put healthy dogs to sleep and their website says they are still rehoming dogs during lockdown so I hope the dogs all get loving homes soon.
Just had a look a my local dogs trust website and the youngest dog they had was 2years old, maybe there is local variance but didnt appear to be an influx of puppies here.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 10/01/2021 15:47

Predictable as an outcome
I’m appalled people were so irresponsible in first place, a pup is a huge commitment
Don’t have a dog as we both work FT and I know it’s a big undertaking

Plussizejumpsuit · 10/01/2021 15:47

I in 4 people have a new pet seems a dodgy stay leta alone 1 in 4 have a new pet they impulse bought. Hmm

twinklespells · 10/01/2021 15:47

Sadly I expect a lot will want their money back and keep the dog in a not great situation waiting for someone to offer silly money.

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 10/01/2021 15:48

I don't mean to be the bearer of even worse news, but a lot of puppies being sold on Gumtree / Pets4Homes have been stolen.

Dog thefts have risen dramatically during lockdown - people are either desperate to make money, or just general C words.

Plussizejumpsuit · 10/01/2021 15:50

So a quarter of the population has a new dog? Eh no? I'm not saying this isn't sad. But don't share nonsense statistics @AlternativePerspective

vanillandhoney · 10/01/2021 15:51

It's not remotely surprising.

I've seen an increasing number of out-of-control adolescent dogs while out on walks recently, too.

Canneverthinkofagoodusername · 10/01/2021 15:52

That’s so sad 😢

Ellmau · 10/01/2021 15:53

This is strange though, we have been trying to adopt a dog from our local dogs trust and there are never any suitable for houses with young children, and very rarely puppies. Where do all these pups go?

The number cited is for enquiries rather than actual surrenders. I suspect some of them will be wanting to recoup the inflated purchase price and not have handed the dog over when they found they would not get £££.

And most likely they will be older puppies who have hit the annoying teenage stage without having had proper training or socialisation.

To be fair, this is what the article says...

lockeddownandcrazy · 10/01/2021 15:56

The ones who will fair worst are high drive dogs like Belgian Malinois and crosses of these types of breeds where they havent even been socialised properly in lockdown so have become far too much for owners who have just seen them on TV fully trained.

It's not dodgy at all. Maybe not 100% accurate, but it wouldn't remotely surprise me.

The demand for puppies went through the ROOF as soon as lockdown as announced. I've seen adverts asking 5k+ for certain breeds. Breeders have posted adverts and received hundreds of enquiries in a matter of days. Puppy farms have cashed in massively - it's awful.

I'm a dog walker and I saw a LOT of people get puppies through the first lockdown. Enquiries went through the roof. Many of these puppies are now 6-9 months old and are massively struggling with a lack of socialisation caused by all the lockdowns and restrictions.

People then went back to work and puppies were stuck home all of a sudden with no company. I see lots of dogs on walks who are young, untrained and the owners clearly have no idea.

The article is badly worded. The stat is that 1 in 4 people who bought a puppy did so on impluse

I think it will get worse as soon as we are able to travel again Sad

BertieBotts · 10/01/2021 16:02

It's badly worded. It says that 1 of 4 people who bought puppies did so because of the pandemic. Not that 1 in 4 people bought puppies :o That would be a lot!

vanillandhoney · 10/01/2021 16:03

@Strawberrypancakes

I’ve looked at a few places online and there don’t seem to be many dogs.. my parents would love to rehome one but there are very few available.
Dogs need to be assessed before they go on to be rehomed. Also, lots of puppies never make it to the website as the rescues already have waiting lists.
Mummyoflittledragon · 10/01/2021 16:04

Wankers
Arseholes
Cunts

They fucked it up for all the genuine owners looking for a new dog and are now throwing away their commodity.

HedgieHog · 10/01/2021 16:04

This is heartbreaking, if love a dog but my circumstances and commitments mean it's not fair for me to have an animal
People should be ashamed

Livelovebehappy · 10/01/2021 16:04

Well we didn’t see that one coming did we.......🙄

BeakyWinder · 10/01/2021 16:05

@AlternativePerspective

@ Sprockerdilerock rescues rarely advertise their puppies because people have a preference over the older dogs. Added to which, these puppies are going to be potential targets for the next lockdown impulse purchasers, except this time they won’t have to part with thousands to get a rescue.

I would be very surprised if this lot are even rehomed before the end of lockdown, and sadly I think that it’s possible many may have to be destroyed.

So they have the puppies, won't advertise them but have them destroyed instead of rehomed?? Sad
tillytoodles1 · 10/01/2021 16:05

It's heartbreaking seeing all these puppies used as toys, then people discard them while still wanting their money back. My daughter has two cocker spaniels, and would like another one in the near future, but the prices are absurd at the moment.

Plussizejumpsuit · 10/01/2021 16:05

@vanillandhoney
Ok there 66. 6 million people in the uk a quarter is roughly 16 million. So you think there at 16 million dogs bought this year?

I'm not disputing this is awful. Puppies are a huge commitment and take load sof work so shouldn't be bought on impulse. I just don't think 16 million have been bought on impulse. Who's is what that stat says. 1 in 4 people impulse bought a pet

Hyly68 · 10/01/2021 16:07

People are irresponsible and selfish that’s why! This is echoed in people’s attitudes to Covid.

OliverBabish · 10/01/2021 16:08

@lockeddownandcrazy I mayyy have one of these that we rescued early last year Grin I’d never heard of them before.
