More than 1800 people have contacted Dog’s trust to rehome unwanted lockdown puppies

And 1 in 4 people admitted they had impulse purchased a pet during lockdown.

Angry how the fuck do we get the message home that a puppy isn’t a toy and that people should think twice three, ten times before rushing out and buying one.

And obviously the increased prices aren’t a deterrent, although those are about greed anyway, because these people are buying them for £££ and then selling them on for the same prices.

I agree. There's one local to me and he is clearly a Weimaraner cross. My friend a life long Weimaraner owner agrees with me.

Thanks Jan - interesting that a Weimaraner owner thinks the same.

It's not a hill I'm prepared to die on, so I'm not going to argue the toss with the owners of silver labs who insist that they are pure-bred. It's no skin off my nose - but they're paying silly money for cross-breeds, even by todays standards.

Labs are greedy and usually fat. My mums poor dog died recently after eating stones in the park. He was 13 and it caused a bowel obstruction

TheHoneyBadger · 13/01/2021 09:01

Labs are very energetic and easy to keep slim if they get enough exercise. It's another it's the owners not the dog thing. They're working dogs and need big off lead open walks.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 16/01/2021 17:04

There are two types of lab - same as with many breeds (including spaniels).

The "working" type tends to be taller - much linger in the leg and a rangier dog altogether.

The show types are considerably chunkier, shorter lesgs in proportion to body size and much broader. These tend to fat if you aren't very careful.

Also, a neutered animal will be more likely to gain weight than an un-neutered one, of any type and of either sex.

*longer in the leg, not linger - apologies

@Crankley have a look at the Oldies website , they specialise in rehoming the more mature dog, but also often need foster homes for their vintage dogs. Depending on the dog and their needs, having a large enclosed garden might enough excitement for some Wink

@SchadenfreudePersonified I wonder if the silver labs have Slovakian rough haired pointers in them ? They are more of a mink colour and tend to be a bit less wick than other pointers ?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 17/01/2021 07:57

Oh - I've never heard of Slovakian rough-haired pointers. I'll have to have a google.

I would have thought Weimeraners anyway though, just because they are a popular breed and it would be easy to get hold of one for stud.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 17/01/2021 08:02

Just had a look - what lovely dogs - I love their moustaches.

I suppose people would find out if the the occasional rough-coated puppy started appearing in silver lab x silver lab litters.

I still think it's Weimie that's in them though. Weimeraners have a very distinctive "stare", much as a border collie does.
