I'm going to say about 97% of people can't cook.

I read threads on here about food all the time & even people who claim 'to 'cook', as in 'make stuff hot and eat it', have no idea about food. How to make delicious things, how to treat ingredients, what goes together.

It honestly makes me a bit sad.

The majority of people probably eat really rubbish food.

I really want people to understand food and eat better, not because I'm a dick, but because it would make their lives more pleasurable.

SimonJT, I'd love to read your meal plan for that list if you fancy doing some more typing Grin

I really like vegetables and pulses but am struggling to instil the love in my children.

littlepattilou · 10/01/2021 16:47

@ShrikeAttack

Haha. The YABU is 89%.

That's very close to my 97% supposition.

I rest my case.

No. 89% of people think you are WRONG! (At the time you posted.) Less than 10% disagree with your ludicrous claim that 97% of people cannot cook. Jeeeeeez. 😂

Maybe you should spend more time learning maths, and less time 'cooking from scratch' with all the arty farty ingredients you CLAIM you buy! Wink

littlepattilou · 10/01/2021 16:50

Meant to add. 89% disagreed with you when you posted @ShrikeAttack and now it's 88%. And it's only 12% who agree. Not nearly 90% like you claim! LOL! That was a typo. I am not shit at maths. 😂

LaMarschallin · 10/01/2021 16:53

I bet you ever expected virtually 9 out of 10 people to disagree with you eh?

I think the OP implied that she was excepting that result, on the basis that those who disagreed with her must be bad cooks.

It's way back in the thread.

Ginfordinner · 10/01/2021 16:54

I must admit that I don't find the OP's weekly menu to my taste.

I don't care for pheasant, and would cook chicken instead
I loathe parsnips
I prefer red cabbage in coleslaw
And I don't like jerusalem artichoke or beetroot
And shoot me - I prefer mashed potatoes to roast potatoes Smile

I'm not fussy - honestly

I think the OP has just managed to pick out all the things I don't care for.

Things we have cooked from scratch this week:

Sticky sesame cauliflower in sweet chilli sauce
Sticky sesame chicken in sweet chilli sauce
Spaghetti with Richmond meat free sausage "meatballs" with home made tomato sauce
Cauliflower and lentil dhansak with naan bread (I didn't make the naan)
Butternut squash and sage risotto (made by DD)
Pizzza completely made from scratch (DH made this) with Tesco Finest coleslaw Grin
Burritos filled with spicy black beans and grated cheese (I didn't make the tortillas or the cheese)

NoOneOwnsTheRainbow · 10/01/2021 16:59
Biscuit
Ginfordinner · 10/01/2021 17:00

Was that for me?
I didn't bake any biscuits Grin

LadyFlumpalot · 10/01/2021 17:01

I can make jewellery.

No, I can't forge you a 22k gold ring with a 3 carat solitaire because I don't have the money or the skill to work with diamonds or gold.

I can make you a rather quite pretty little silver pendant from precious metal clay, enamel and semi precious stone beads however.

To your average person I'm a jeweller. To Cartier or Boodles, I'm really not.

Same principle applies to cooking. I openly admit that I cannot cook. I don't like cooking. I don't really like food. I have no interest in it other than it keeps me alive. My husband on the other hand enjoys cooking and makes food that tastes good. I would say that means he can cook. A master chef would probably say he can't.

Pinkmagic1 · 10/01/2021 17:05

I think you are using this as a stealth boast op. The average family in the UK do not eat pheasant, duck eggs and artichokes as part of their daily diet. These are all quite difficult to source and often expensive items for most people here.
I consider myself a resonable cook, but I am not a chef. Some dishes I cook better than others and I think this is the case for most people.
Many people live busy lives and do not have time to be making soup and bread and other stuff from scratch everyday. We have a mixture of convenience and cooked from scratch food. Tonight we have Izmir kofte made from scratch, yesterday the kids had nuggets and chips.

TheFuckingDogs · 10/01/2021 17:08

Well for a start you’re probably not taking into account all the old Asian, African etc grandmas who are immigrants who came here and learned to cook from scratch and still do! Plus anyone who’s a chef plus people like me who are just massive hobby chefs 🤣 I suspect the figure is still high but not nearly as high as you!

GarlicSoup · 10/01/2021 17:11

@TheUnexpectedPickle

"Not because I'm a dick"

Well. At least you're self aware.

Now excuse me, I must get back to my Pot Noodle.

goldielockdown2 · 10/01/2021 17:17

I'd turn down your food, OP. Sorry. Not to my taste.

doadeer · 10/01/2021 17:17

What a strange thread!

Many people can cook, many people can't... Same as absolutely everything else in life!

You sound like such an awful snob, your poor friends and family who cook for you not knowing you are saying this about them. I feel sad for them.

You have no idea about people's lives and why they can or can't cook. How judgemental.

Imissmoominmama · 10/01/2021 17:19

@goldielockdown2- what, all of it, without trying it?

tatutata · 10/01/2021 17:21

I would say I can cook, but I do just stick a pizza in the oven once a week. I know how to make a white sauce, how to make pastry, make a quiche from scratch, mince pies, cake, meringues etc. But there is a big difference between knowing these things, and being arsed to do them. Person I know from school seems to eat Mcdonalds all the time, but then mentioned in passing that her white sauce "came out thinner than usual the other day". So you never know.

katieg03 · 10/01/2021 17:22

Black pudding?? I'm Scottish and 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮 I always cook from scratch. I probably wouldn't repeat my meals twice in one month bar a good old roast dinner. We all have different budgets, timescales, taste buds don't we?

vodkaredbullgirl · 10/01/2021 17:23

I'm trying to decide what pie chicken or steak to get out the freeze.

goldielockdown2 · 10/01/2021 17:23

IMiss there are elements I would eat but most of it doesn't cater to my diet but luckily for me I'm a great cook and enjoy the meals I make for myself and my family. Not everyone is going to look at OP's menu and find it appealing.

Ginfordinner · 10/01/2021 17:26

The brisket and the brunch sound delicious.

I have never made ribollita before and am sitting here trying to decide what to do for tea. I am going to check my store cupboard and fridge as I think I might make this.

randomer · 10/01/2021 17:28

Is there any other type of artichoke other than Jerusalem and why do they taste like woody slime?

This week I cooked a sort of Chinese "rice and bits" quite tasty, an omlette, fish in cheese sauce and ham and bean soup.

LaMarschallin · 10/01/2021 17:29

Globe artichokes?

Chanjer · 10/01/2021 17:31

I can cook and I cannot accept I could fit into 3% of any skillset, I'm remarkably unremarkable.

Far more likely that 97% of people can cook and the remaining 3% can't read

SchrodingersImmigrant · 10/01/2021 17:32

The different artichokes which seem to be causing some confusion

I'm going to say about 97% of people can't cook.

Ok, what's your source for this very precise statistic?
