I read threads on here about food all the time & even people who claim 'to 'cook', as in 'make stuff hot and eat it', have no idea about food. How to make delicious things, how to treat ingredients, what goes together.

It honestly makes me a bit sad.

The majority of people probably eat really rubbish food.

I really want people to understand food and eat better, not because I'm a dick, but because it would make their lives more pleasurable.

See, you post this because you think it makes you sound superior, but in fact you really are a dick.

Reading this whilst eating a frozen Goodfellas pizza Blush
haha love a Goodfellas xx
MintyMabel · 10/01/2021 10:32

Is this an age thing, I wonder? Early 40s - I don't think I know anyone who can't put a functional, home cooked meal on the table!

No, it’s a you thing. I know plenty of people in their 40s who can cook.

TerrifiedOfTrying4No2 · 10/01/2021 10:32

@MintyMabel

Yup.

vodkaredbullgirl · 10/01/2021 10:32

I grow my own veg and herbs.

TeaMilkNonePlease · 10/01/2021 10:33

@ShrikeAttack

*I can cook

But I don't

(I find it boring now, would rather eat a sandwich and watch Netflix)

This a million percent. Luckily dh is a good cook, and actually enjoys it so I don't have to do it very often.*

Well watch Netflix and eat rubbish food then!

Jolly good that your DH can cook. WHY would you enjoy food but not know how to cook it yourself?

Enjoy yer Netflix.

I can eat it without cooking it in the same way I like to live in a safe and weatherproof house but I couldn't build one.
ShrikeAttack · 10/01/2021 10:33

Well you can't @midnightstar66, obviously. I was comparing them to the cost of decent chicken eggs.

Anyway, duck eggs aren't obligatory. I eat them because I like them. I'm not suggesting anyone else does.

Scrub that last post - misread the comment.

Walkaround · 10/01/2021 10:33

@ShrikeAttack - It is a bit odd that you are judging others’ cooking by your own personal tastes. What is it that makes you think your taste is special and superior? When you criticise others’ meals, do they agree that they also weren’t that keen?
Fwiw, I agree that a lot of people have limited cooking skills and don’t have enough variety in their diets to benefit their personal health, but you are coming across as a food snob, not just someone interested in food and nutrition.

Lweji · 10/01/2021 10:33

How do you cook the pheasant? It can be quite dry.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 10/01/2021 10:33

@vodkaredbullgirl

I grow my own veg and herbs.
Me too😁 It's satisfying. I also make own yogurt and sauerkraut 😁

Doesn't mean we are better than others, unlike what op thinks😁

FabbyMagic · 10/01/2021 10:34

Well yes you are a bit of a tosser and you’ve really rubbed people up the wrong way (intentionally?) Grin

I get what you’re saying though. I’m probably in the not-a-very-good-cook category, I’m really fussy (not by choice!), I get stressed cooking and getting things right, I have a busy life, I don’t always have the time or inclination to spend ages on a meal and I don’t have the knowledge to do eat really well every day. Of course I’d like to (though not as rich foods as you had for your menu) but how would I learn and find the time to do all that? Just doesn’t seem feasible.

Maybe your sadness is better placed in being sad children aren’t taught how to cook well as part of compulsory curriculum? (Whether that would be right or not)

If you do consider yourself a really good cook, how do you suggest someone like me improves? I don’t think I have a natural flair for it, I can’t just throw things together from the fridge and have to rigidly follow a recipe. And I don’t have all the right equipment, small kitchen and cooker is a bit rubbish!

wowfudge · 10/01/2021 10:35

I've read your menu for the next few days OP and would say that cooking bacon, sausages, black pudding, smoked mackerel, etc which you haven't made yourself is no different from someone opening a jar or pasta or curry sauce to put with the meat and veg they're having.

Roasts are not difficult - it's timing everything to be ready at the same time which is the key.

I use convenience foods to make life easier and meal prep quicker. It doesn't mean I can't cook or don't care what I eat. Those convenience foods are things like marinated chicken breasts I can just stick in the oven, frozen veg which is washed, sliced and portioned and goes in the microwave. I prefer to use my free time to exercise or relax.

If I wanted to I could cook a cordon bleu style meal every night, but I can't be arsed and my household is happy enough with what I knock out.

StopGo · 10/01/2021 10:35

@ShrikeAttack tonight in the Stopgo household we will be dining on Spam fritters, cheesy mash and baked beans, tins opened by my own fair hands and homemade mash from actual potatoes. Not a gastronomic feast but something my DC have wanted to try since reading about school dinners from the 60s & 70s.
Tomorrow my choice so veg stir fry with a few prawns added.

You've obviously got lots of time on your hands and a healthy food budget.

ineedaholidaynow · 10/01/2021 10:36

So are you going to tell us what you had for Christmas Dinner @ShrikeAttack

wowfudge · 10/01/2021 10:36

Btw - Jerusalem artichokes are the food of the devil and I will never knowingly eat them again!

Kintsugi16 · 10/01/2021 10:36

Only skimmed thread OP and read your meals Sun-Tues, plus the Irish Stew.

That’s an awful lot of processed/red/fatty meat. You may know ‘how to cook’ but are obviously oblivious on how to ‘cook healthy food’

ShrikeAttack · 10/01/2021 10:37

I can eat it without cooking it in the same way I like to live in a safe and weatherproof house but I couldn't build one

That's a rubbish analogy though. You buy/rent a house and live in that one house for years. You eat three tines a day, it's essential to your continuance.

OP posts:
StopGo · 10/01/2021 10:38

@wowfudge my family agree 100%. Turns out Jerusalem artichokes give them terrible upset tums.

EmpressSuiko · 10/01/2021 10:38

What about people with food aversions?
People with allergies?
Sensory issues?

I am the cook in my family because dh has no idea how to, I’ve make plenty of meals from scratch but I have to tweak the recipes to suit everyone’s needs, I can’t eat any nuts or peanuts and I can’t eat cheese yet so many recipes call for these things.

None of us like onions, only one of us eats a variety of vegetables, one hates any form of potatoes, any sauce is a huge no no for the kids, everyone is particular about what meat they like.

Each individual in my family has very specific likes and dislikes and I do not have the energy nor passion to cater for each of us, if we all liked the same food and if the kids didn’t have sensory issues to work around life would be easier but alas I’m one of the ones who clearly feeds my family shit!

Oysterbabe · 10/01/2021 10:39
@wowfudge my family agree 100%. Turns out Jerusalem artichokes give them terrible upset tums.
They're called Fartichokes in this house.

TerrifiedOfTrying4No2 · 10/01/2021 10:39

Can I request a photo of some of the meals you make too? ☺️ Would be interesting to see how you dish up. You can tell a lot from just looking at food.

Inastatus · 10/01/2021 10:41

I’m very excited OP as we too are having home made rosti for breakfast (made by 14 year old DS). You can keep your duck eggs though 🤢 We are also having brisket today - does that make me one of your top 3% 🤞🏻

SchrodingersImmigrant · 10/01/2021 10:41

@wowfudge

Btw - Jerusalem artichokes are the food of the devil and I will never knowingly eat them again!
Apparently they were very handy during famine. Never tried them because everyone says they are bbbbland?
WorraLiberty · 10/01/2021 10:41

@gannett

Goady first post but it's true that most people can cook, but probably aren't huge food nerds who spend their time thinking about perfecting new techniques and cuisines. That's fine and like everything else in life. Most people can grow a few plants, enjoy watching films and listening to music, aware of politics. Only a small proportion are gardening, cinema, music or politics nerds.

I think everyone should have something they're nerdy about but it's a terrible look to become a snob about it.

It's far from the OP's first post.

The majority of her past posts (yes, I looked) are about food.

She appears to have a bit of an unhealthy obsession with it.
