I'm going to say about 97% of people can't cook.

I read threads on here about food all the time & even people who claim 'to 'cook', as in 'make stuff hot and eat it', have no idea about food. How to make delicious things, how to treat ingredients, what goes together.

It honestly makes me a bit sad.

The majority of people probably eat really rubbish food.

I really want people to understand food and eat better, not because I'm a dick, but because it would make their lives more pleasurable.

@jinglinghellsbells I spend £40 per week for two people. So roughly £3 per person per day. I still manage to cook good well balanced food with a lot more fruit & veg and a lot less cholesterol than OP.

Given the situation a lot of people find themselves in at the moment - covid, recession, work, stress, home schooling, I think op is desperately out of touch.

OverByYer · 10/01/2021 08:50

Oh poor OP , feeling sad for us all that we don’t understand food.
What a pompous arse you are.
Please don’t choke on your home cooked , gourmet dinner.

Crimblecrumble1990 · 10/01/2021 08:51

What an utterly bizarre person you are OP. Aren't humans fascinating creatures.

merrygoround51 · 10/01/2021 08:51

Every meal doesn’t need to be a production but by and large they should be nutritionally balanced and tasty

So I don’t care if my ragu isn’t the traditional Italian version or my casserole is full of veg that don’t usually belong. I’m feeding a family, not filming a TV show

I use quite a few Mary berry recipes - is that just too uninspiring

My mother treats meals like a production and a competition and it’s stressful to be around

I should add that I bought in Christmas dinner this year and it was divine

KatherineJaneway · 10/01/2021 08:52

I was convinced from the first post OP had been on the 🍷

Hangingover · 10/01/2021 08:53

Ffs not everyone likes cooking!!

DP is the taste equivalent of tone deaf and finds cooking for others stressful.

I cook every day from scratch and have for years, including home made bread, because I adore it and want to make my food as delicious as possible.

No need to feel sad for him OP, he's well fed and does all the washing up Grin

If I ever found myself telling him he needs to learn because it's "good for him" I'd, quite rightly, punch myself in the face.

Jog on, OP. Don't let the pheasant hit you on the way out.

Fieldofyellowflowers · 10/01/2021 08:54

You do know that all of the best chefs in the business come up with their recipes by just experimenting with ingredients and seeing what works and what doesn't, don't you?

trappedsincesundaymorn · 10/01/2021 08:55

It's my 6th day on shift, I've got 3 people to visit (I'm a support worker before anyone screams "You can't mix with other households" at me), and I've got a report to write up for a review meeting on Tuesday....I'll be lucky to get a chance to have a cuppa and a biscuit, let alone a roast pheasant meal today.

MrsSpenserGregson · 10/01/2021 08:55

@LaurieFairyCake

I can cook

But I don't

(I find it boring now, would rather eat a sandwich and watch Netflix)

Same here.

OP - some of us just really aren't obsessed with food!

JorisBonson · 10/01/2021 08:55

I can cook. I'm just not a joyless, smug wanker about it.

WizardOfAus · 10/01/2021 08:56

@ShrikeAttack

It genuinely does make me sad when I read about rubbish food that people eat.

Not because they can't afford it.

Because they can't cook.

It makes me feel sad that the majority of people eat rubbish food. Life is short. Why feed yourself terrible things?

If it genuinely makes you “so sad”, do something about it. Write a cook book? Offer cooking lessons? Start a blog or Instagram?

You could brand yourself, ”The Smug & Sanctimonious Cook”

Hatstrategicallydipped · 10/01/2021 08:56

I doubt the OP has ever had the rare delicacy that is a Tayto crisp sangidge.

Bilgepumper · 10/01/2021 08:56

Eggs are eggs. A duck egg requires the same type of cooking as a hen’s egg.

Obviously @ShrikeAttack is just a raging snob talking about duck eggs and pheasant. 😂🤣😂

Xerochrysum · 10/01/2021 08:56

If you have been on any thread on MN talking about food/cooking/recipe, you wouldn't think that 97% people can't cook.

shouldistop · 10/01/2021 08:57

Were you high when you posted this op?

Hatstrategicallydipped · 10/01/2021 08:58

DD1 was reared on duck eggs as her childminder kept ducks. Duck eggs and noodles.

FangsForTheMemory · 10/01/2021 08:58

There’s nothing on your menus that I haven’t cooked except ribollita and I have never fancied that. I’m cooking roast beef with all the trimmings for lunch today and as I live on my own, I’ll be getting the leftovers in various forms until about Thursday next week. I’m a very average cook. I think your post was more than averagely patronising and judgmental though.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 10/01/2021 08:59

What’s the definition of people who ‘can cook’ anyway?

Surely it’s people who can make meals that other people enjoy.

As for ‘chucking random veg in’ , people who can cook don’t need to slavishly follow recipes - they will know from experience what’s going to work/taste nice, and if that entails using up something rather than wasting it, so much the better.

Good food doesn’t have to be fancy, either. It doesn’t have to need 14 ingredients, including 3 you have to go and buy specially.

JinglingHellsBells · 10/01/2021 08:59

I could feed 2 people on £40 a week.

Maybe she is out of touch, but going back to your point, a cheap cut of meat could feed you for 2 if not 3 meals if padded out with loads of veg and beans. Cuts like shin of beef are cheap and make gorgeous stews.

I get 6 meals out of a chicken and ok, it's free range and might cost £8, but we get 2 roast dinners, two meals where the rest is made into a pilaff or similar, I make stock with the carcass (simmering for 4 hours) and that either makes a huge pan of soup with veg, or I use the stock for a risotto.

OverByYer · 10/01/2021 08:59

I also find food in general really boring and time consuming.
I eat to keep going, I wish someone would invent a pill that we could take to fill me up and give me all the nutrients I need. Imagine how much more time we would have if we didn’t have to shop/ prepare and tidy up

TheNinny · 10/01/2021 09:00

You sound like a dick

Zfactorstar · 10/01/2021 09:00

I think we've been given the rounds by a troll.

MrsSpenserGregson · 10/01/2021 09:01

@ShrikeAttack

*I can cook

But I don't

(I find it boring now, would rather eat a sandwich and watch Netflix)

This a million percent. Luckily dh is a good cook, and actually enjoys it so I don't have to do it very often.*

Well watch Netflix and eat rubbish food then!

Jolly good that your DH can cook. WHY would you enjoy food but not know how to cook it yourself?

Enjoy yer Netflix.

@LaurieFairyCake didn't say that her sandwich was rubbish!

Wtf is wrong with a sandwich?

I had a gorgeous sandwich the other day. Granary bread, mayonnaise, strong cheddar cheese, tomato, pickle, ham and cucumber. With carrot sticks and olives on the side, washed down with a cup of coffee and followed by a chocolate brownie with raspberries. That is NOT shit food!!

Your menu, on the other hand, sounds ponce-tastic, labour-intensive and wasteful. And, quite frankly, far too much food. You do not need a big brunch and a big dinner on the same day. You sound obsessed with food. And pheasant???? You do realise that pheasants aren't raised / farmed the same way as chickens, don't you? There aren't enough of the feckers for us all to eat them on a weekly basis. Jeez.

Hatstrategicallydipped · 10/01/2021 09:02

@Zfactorstar

I think we've been given the rounds by a troll.
Arah, it's been educational.
dontdisturbmenow · 10/01/2021 09:02

I agree with you with the principle, a lot of poor understanding of tasty cooking but totally disagree with your percentage.

In my world, it would be more around 50%, even maybe lower. Most of my friends love cooking, regularly cook from reputable recipe books and will be we miss watching MasterChef.
