Are you going out for exercise?

I feel stupid asking this but as the COVID rate is now up to 1 in 15 in some parts of London...are people still going out for exercise? I had planned a forest walk with my DC today but now I’m wondering if I’m being irresponsible? We know the virus doesn’t hang around in the air but the message seems so clearly focused on STAY AT HOME. Exercise is allowed, I know, but it seems at odds with the stay at home message. Maybe the new variant does hang around in the air? Oh I’m being hysterical aren’t I? Tell me to get a grip and go out please.

No. It's allowed but my ds needs 1 to 1 outside and I have other dc too. PIL who usually help us get out are shielding and all indoor activities are closed.

Splodgetastic · 09/01/2021 12:17

If everyone wears a mask it should minimise the risk, but obviously you can’t control what others do. Hopefully people take heed of Sadiq’s advice. Trouble is, he is a really sensible and reasonable person (unlike Boris) who people seem to take affront to, dare I say it, for no reason other than the fact that he’s a Muslim.

Yes going out for exercise
Things are bad enough without letting my fitness slide

MarshaBradyo · 09/01/2021 12:19

It’d be annoying to get it from our usual trip to the park. I think we still will but see what others say.

thisismyusername21 · 09/01/2021 12:19

Yes absolutely we are. It does help we live semi rural. Could walk for miles and not really see anyone and if you do there’s plenty of room for social distancing. I would be more concerned in busy areas though. do think exercise is important though and I don’t think it’s a huge risk.

Maybe if possible you could get up early tomorrow to get out for a walk early first thing when it’ll be quieter? Easier said than done I know but as a family we do like getting out and about early at the weekends so it’s quieter!

AuntieUrsula · 09/01/2021 12:20

I go for a run or walk everyday. Exercise is important! You will be fine outdoors.

OllietheOwl · 09/01/2021 12:20

I’m going out every day as are most people I know. If you keep your distance the risk is so minimal. Life has to go on, even in a pandemic. Take all the necessary precautions but outdoor exercise is allowed.

MarshaBradyo · 09/01/2021 12:21

In in London too op. Parks are pretty busy.

I’ll probably still use them to exercise and for dc though. Hard one as it is very high

UrAWizHarry · 09/01/2021 12:21

No virus can 'hang around in the air'. Anything in the air in an outdoor space dissipates almost instantaneously, just think about how quickly your breath vapour disappears even on the most still of days.

Just don't hang about other people for too long and you are perfectly safe.

RedskyAtnight · 09/01/2021 12:29

Yes, but I go at quiet times in quiet areas. Though tbh, that was a pre-Covid preference as well!
I wouldn't want to go for a walk if I couldn't, say, socially distance for at least the vast majority of the time.

Snowvid19 · 09/01/2021 12:29

We’re going out as much as we can. Our toddler needs a really good run around every day or he (and we!) would go mad. We live quite rurally and I have noticed an increase in the number of walkers we see, I’m guessing as no one has anything else to do, but it doesn’t worry me.

NoWordForFluffy · 09/01/2021 12:31

Not at the moment as I don't want to break my neck slipping on frost / ice! I will once it's warmer (as in above-freezing, not warm), however.

LeSquigh · 09/01/2021 12:32

Yes! Every day, with my kids because they need to run around and also on my own, fast walking at exercise rate for about 45 mins.

ParisJeTAime · 09/01/2021 12:35

Not in London, but not too far. Yes, we are going out for walks or sometimes runs or bike/scooter rides. DH takes dcs to the park too, but I'm not as keen on going there.

Scarby9 · 09/01/2021 12:38

I'm in Yorkshire and our rates are currently slightly lower than they reached in the autumn when I was walking at weekends.

Difficult to do more when it is winter because it is so dark once I've finished work, and really not possible at all while it has also been so icy the last week.

However, my friend and I have just bern debating whether to walk today - daylight, sunshine Smile and no snow on the ground BUT if we are to 'act as if we had the virus' we wouldn't be going out or meeting up for our 2m distanced walk at all.

In the end, we have talked ourselves into doing it today because of the low local rates and the fact that by next weekend we wil be less comfortable rather than more.

I must start doing Joe Wicks or something...

Guineapig99 · 09/01/2021 12:39

You need to get out - your kids need to go out. Go out together, stay away from other people.

Fizbosshoes · 09/01/2021 12:42

I'm still going out for a walk or run most days. My DC are quite averse to going out but I try to encourage a walk/run a couple of times a week because their default position is in front of a screen which I don't think is healthy either.

Lifeisabeach09 · 09/01/2021 12:43

Go out, OP. It will be good for your mental and physical health.

Doesn't hurt to wear a mask if it makes you feel safer and keep your distance from people.

MissMarpleDarling · 09/01/2021 12:43

I've been at work all week and my secondary school childs been home learning alone at home and hasnt left the house since 28th December. So today we are going for a long walk.

Hotcuppatea · 09/01/2021 12:44

Yep. Today I took the dogs for an hour long walk to a cafe. Got a takeaway coffee and a brownie and walked back. Sun on my face, a podcast on my phone. Was lovely.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 09/01/2021 12:46

Not in London but our local park was rammed yesterday. It's freezing. Normally there would be more geese than people...

Of course you can go out. But be aware it might be busier than usual

applepineapple · 09/01/2021 12:47

Going out for a walk most days but my main exercise is indoors on Zoom, spin bike etc

sleepyhead · 09/01/2021 12:50

I just realised this morning that I literally hadn't been outside since last Sunday. Dh is sahp do has been taking the dcs out while I work.

I'll go to Tesco later on. Big whoop.

So yes, from next week I'll be forcing myself out every day for some fresh air at lunchtime and we'll try to get out as a family tomorrow.

My back hurts and that will be why.

The last lockdown, I was out running every day but then work ramped up hugely and I needed to cover school runs which meant I couldnt take a break during the day and with the darker evenings everything slipped. Now that I dont have the school run I need to build exercise back in.

MarleyTheDog · 09/01/2021 12:57

I walk the dog twice a day. The guidance in my area is to exercise from home. No driving to exercise. There is no limit on how many times we go out to exercise.

ParisJeTAime · 09/01/2021 13:02

My back hurts and that will be why.

YY, I got this recently, when dd had to have a covid test and then her school bubble had a positive case, so she had to isolate. I could still go out in her isolation period, technically, however, I couldn't realistically get out. Had a living room disco one day and was throwing the kids around. My back was fucked, for over a week! It was terrible. Haven't stopped exercising since!
