Are you going out for exercise?

I feel stupid asking this but as the COVID rate is now up to 1 in 15 in some parts of London...are people still going out for exercise? I had planned a forest walk with my DC today but now I’m wondering if I’m being irresponsible? We know the virus doesn’t hang around in the air but the message seems so clearly focused on STAY AT HOME. Exercise is allowed, I know, but it seems at odds with the stay at home message. Maybe the new variant does hang around in the air? Oh I’m being hysterical aren’t I? Tell me to get a grip and go out please.

Yes I would go utterly mad in a matter of days if I couldn’t.

gannett · 09/01/2021 14:13

No. Not because of Covid though. No real desire to leave the house in these temperatures and not sure why people seem to need to - I hate being so cold. I would still be going for runs despite the weather, but I also have a minor ankle injury that I'm resting (also gives me a handy excuse to avoid the cold). I can do fairly intense exercise at home to keep my fitness up.

I found some alternative running routes in Lockdown 1 when my usual paths and parks got too rammed so if that's the case now I'll just revert to those. Again Covid is only a minor reason - it's just very hard to run properly when you have to dodge and weave through so many people.

If I could run indoors I would! I simply do not understand why people want to endure the outside world in this weather. I have been for a couple of short walks at DP's insistence and found them thoroughly unpleasant experiences.

FuckOffBorisYouTwat · 09/01/2021 14:16

God yes. I would literally go insane. I have a myriad of health problems that will get worse unless I keep fit.

ChesterDraws4Sale · 09/01/2021 14:18

No, trying to minimise contact with others to reduce risk.

NoToMisogyny · 09/01/2021 14:21

I don’t know how anyone can survive without getting some fresh air at least once a day.

SavageBeauty73 · 09/01/2021 14:25

I just walked the dog and wore my mask for the first time outside. I'm in London.

Littlepond · 09/01/2021 14:26

My kids need fresh air. Our mental health needs protecting. We go for exercise every day and at the weekends we will be getting a bus for 10 mins to go to an open space / woodland area to walk.
We do nothing apart from this.

User158340 · 09/01/2021 14:29

Stay home, save lives.

PatchworkElmer · 09/01/2021 14:31

I go out to run very early in the morning. Rarely see anyone.

User158340 · 09/01/2021 14:32

@MarshaBradyo

It’d be annoying to get it from our usual trip to the park. I think we still will but see what others say.
I'd say if you're leaving your house wear a mask and keep away from any crowds and try and keep two meters from anyone, although you will have to walk past people at times.

This is for the moment while rates are sky high. I've been quite blase about being in the open air (although away from crowds) up until the last couple of weeks.

ScribblingPixie · 09/01/2021 14:33

I'm in London & go out every day - but at weekend I avoid parks and green spaces, which are very busy, and walk in the back streets instead which are mostly deserted.

Wannabegreenfingers · 09/01/2021 14:33

Yes, and I don't consider my walk irresponsible or selfish. I keep a wide berth of others. Unless it becomes law I won't wear a mask for walking. I always wear a mask in shops etc, outdoor mask wearing is my straw that will break the camels back. I did 5.3 miles today and will do similar tomorrow.

oakleaffy · 09/01/2021 14:33

@TalkSenseIntoMe
Walks are ESSENTIAL to most people’s mental health.
Exercise helps boost immune system , surely.
Before Covid, our GP surgery had a screen that flashed with messages to EXERCISE to the point of feeling slightly out of breath at least three times a week

Yoga can be good exercise indoors, but I am out now and can see at least 100 others exercising!

Before Covid open spaces were almost empty.

Never seen parks and down land so busy.

Foghead · 09/01/2021 14:37

Outer London here to and yes, we go out daily if we can and definitely every other day.
My dcs are stuck in front of a laptop all day for school, It’s so important to balance that out with fresh air and exercise.

ThatLibraryMiss · 09/01/2021 14:44

1 in 15 now?

Yesterday he told the BBC it was 1 in 20 "in some parts of London" and the ONS reckoned 1 in 30. Four days ago the people behind the Zoe app said 1 in 40.

Sources: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-55588163 and

And yes, I will be continuing to go out for walks. The local golf course is closed again so it's a great opportunity to walk there.

MrsJBaptiste · 09/01/2021 14:47

@gannett Are you happy to stay inside most days? I've had to isolate all week and have been chomping at the bit to stretch my legs and getvsome feesh air!

My kids haven't left the house all week so have been dragged out on a walk today and a longer one tomorrow 👣👣

katy1213 · 09/01/2021 14:48

It's like the first day of spring today - lots of people in the park and no officious policemen when we sat down with a coffee to say that it constituted a picnic!
You are being paranoid - you won't catch it from a passing squirrel!

nancybotwinbloom · 09/01/2021 14:48

Yes I am walking the park with the dog and doing 8k daily.

I'd go mad otherwise I need some alone time every day.

gannett · 09/01/2021 15:05

Probably happier to stay inside longer than most. I just hate being this cold more than I like fresh air! In a normal January I'd only ever leave the house for a run a couple of times a week, socialising and grocery shopping - absolutely no more than I needed to.

Come spring I'm getting as much fresh air as I possibly can!

Monkeytennis97 · 09/01/2021 15:06

I was but am leaving it for 2/3 weeks now. Very high rate here.

Christmasfairy2020 · 09/01/2021 15:08

Yes but mon to fri other than school run (key worker wfh) I stay in as its dark after work. Today I've been to opticians and tip click and collect and pound shop. Tomorrow meeting mum and her dog for a walk with my kids

Peace43 · 09/01/2021 15:13

I walk my dog twice daily. The kids come along for walk#2. I’d go nuts trapped in all day!

Figgygal · 09/01/2021 15:17

I live in a village so can walk very rural routes without another soul in sight
Take the dog out 3 times a day one of which is long and with the kids

itsgettingweird · 09/01/2021 15:19

I think there may be evidence this new strain is more transmissible outdoors and that might be weather related too as I know there have been lots of outbreak in cold food factories in first wave.

This is because I've heard we may be asked to wear masks outside.

But as this is just tit boys from media stories it's questionable in accuracy!

But you are allowed to walk and a forest and woods where you can run in trees off the beaten track is probably the safest place.

Spidey66 · 09/01/2021 15:21

Walking the dog every day. Apart from her needing it, I think some fresh air and exercise is necessary. Exercising indoors does not give you vitamin D.
