Another plane missing

HoppingPavlova · 09/01/2021 12:04

Not sure if this is the right place, didn’t seem to fit anywhere.

Just read another plane has disappeared from radar. Indonesian flight 182, Boeing 747.

What I can’t work out is they are reporting it lost contact 45 mins after departure and Flight Radar indicated it lost 3000m altitude 4mins after take-off. I understand the 45mins but not the loss of altitude 4mins after take-off. Wouldn’t the plane still be climbing in that time? I would think it would even be visible from the air traffic tower! Maybe the early reports have muddled information?

Hopefully they locate this one and by someone me miracle there are survivors but experience proves doubtful unfortunately.

its not missing, it has crashed

PleasantVille · 09/01/2021 12:09

Another one? Has there been one recently, I can imagine that we aren't getting much world news atm

Username7521 · 09/01/2021 12:11

Not sure if you’ve read but though flights are way down year on year in 2020 crashes were up.

No, I've not heard that, I'll have a look
Username7521 · 09/01/2021 12:13

It’s also another 737 not 747. Bloody dodgy plans which I don’t want to fly in again

I thought that one was in Russia? Or has there been another crash?

OP do you have any links?

HoppingPavlova · 09/01/2021 12:15

Sorry, posted from an early report, have not searched for any updates and imagine probably errors initially with media rush to get information out.

Indeed. Very few 747s fly other than cargo.
HoppingPavlova · 09/01/2021 12:15

I read it in a paid news site but I’ll try and find a link that should work for free.

It's a 737-500, different plane than the MAX variant which was grounded after the two crashes.

Lockheart · 09/01/2021 12:18

'Didnt seem to fit anywhere?'

The News section would seem to be a better choice than AIBU...

EileenGC · 09/01/2021 12:18

BBC are reporting it on their front news page. It was a 737 (not a 747) flown by a local airline, and they lost contact with the aircraft whilst it was over water. So it's safe to assume it has crashed into the sea, sadly.

CharlotteRose90 · 09/01/2021 12:18

It’s crashed into the sea unfortunately. They’ve found debris in the ocean now already. So sad and as an airline worker it fills me with dread every time I see it

HoppingPavlova · 09/01/2021 12:18

www.smh.com.au/world/asia/authorities-lose-contact-with-boeing-737-flight-over-indonesia-20210109-p56swv.html

This is the latest I can find here, hopefully it can be accessed. Not sure if more recent reports in other news elsewhere? Says a search and rescue been sent out but not that it has been located so unless another update somewhere neither crashed or missing officially at this point?

Haworthia · 09/01/2021 12:19

It’s not a 737 MAX but a 27 year old 737-500, I believe.

Indonesia also have a very bad aviation safety record.

Oh how horrible.
EileenGC · 09/01/2021 12:26

And yes, it wasn't a 737 MAX which was model involved in a few crashes over the last couple of years. It was a 737-500.

737s are one of the most common aircrafts used for short haul flights (together with the Airbus 320 family).

In fact Ryanair only fly 737s (albeit the newer 737-800 model) and they haven't had a single crash in its over 30 years of history.

Well yes, that's factually correct - but for context to to help out the nervous flyers I'd point out that according to sources the 2020 figure for individual fatalities in large commercial aircraft operations was under 300 deaths across the world...not accidents, that's individual the number of deaths...incredibly sad but compare and contrast with Covid.
PleasantVille · 09/01/2021 12:30

@Username7521

Interesting but when I click on the link it suggests I read an article about 2019 having a very low rate of deaths in plane crashes so probably needs a bit more analysis and comparison with a longer term.

Not correct, they had a non fatal 737 accident at Rome due to multiple birdstrikes several years ago..

Not to mention that nearly 2,000 people die on UK roads every year.

It wasn't a crash. They didn't crash into anything, they got hit by bird strikes. The amount of plane accidents caused by birds is unbelievable, if you research it.

8 people were taken to hospital with minor injuries. That's definitely not a crash, and a bit different to an aircraft failure or poor management by the crew.

That's what I was going to ask. I had read earlier today that a plane had gone missing, and thought this post meant a second plane had gone missing today.
littlepeas · 09/01/2021 12:41

Re Ryanair - that’s still a crash! Plane crashes can be relatively minor in the same way that car crashes can.
