Picking new glasses during covid

XjustagirlX · 09/01/2021 10:53

Hi I desperately need to pick some new frames for my glasses as my prescription has drastically changed.

I’m just wondering if anyone has done this during covid? Do I need to try all of the frames on while wearing my mask because obviously I will need to see how they suit my face.

I’ve looked on Specsavers website and it isn’t clear, it just says that all frames will be disinfected between uses. I’ve also looked at the opticians guidelines and can’t find the answer.

Any experiences would be appreciated.

I've had new specs, yes you have to keep your mask on (Vision Express). They let you try on as many as you like but you put them on the bottom shelf for cleaning.
It's not the most relaxing experience but I managed to get some.

dementedpixie · 09/01/2021 10:54

Yes you wear your mask while trying frames on

RMRM · 09/01/2021 10:55

When DS was choosing new frames, he was allowed to briefly pull down the mask to see what they looked like on the ones that were possibles. The assistants stood a distance away.

This was in Boots in November.

Westnorwood · 09/01/2021 10:56

Ace and Tate are brilliant. You can select four frames to try on at home for free

RMRM · 09/01/2021 10:56

Yes, they also took the ones he had tried on to be disinfected afterwards.

SomewhatBored · 09/01/2021 10:56

I've been putting off my eye test due to Covid so no experience (yet), but Specsavers have a virtual try-on on their website which might help you narrow your choice down.

My husband is going next week, but he just picks the cheapest frames off the rack!

Nomoresleeps · 09/01/2021 10:56

In my optician, they told me I could take my mask off. It helped as they kept steaming up with the mask on and I could barely see.

You put the glasses you have tried in a tray which they then disinfect.

HappyThursdays · 09/01/2021 10:57

I went this week and had to keep my mask on but they did say I could lower it to under my nose while trying on as it was making it difficult to fit them

RMRM · 09/01/2021 10:57

(He didn't ask to or necessarily want to, but they said he could).

WingBingo · 09/01/2021 10:57

Maybe do the virtual try on to see how they look, then use the time in store to see how they fit.

Good luck!

I had new glasses from Specsavers in the November lockdown (due to major change in sight) and was concerned about this but it was no problem. I picked the frames I wanted to try and then sat behind a screen to try them on without a mask. All those not chosen were taken to be cleaned.
I also had to put my mask over mouth only during part of the test as well as it was in the way.

XjustagirlX · 09/01/2021 11:04

I’ve done the digital try on to help narrow down my selection. I’m also going I to store with a list of ones I have seen online. I do find that the try on online isn’t great because I have quite a small face so it makes it look like the glasses fit but in reality they will be too big on my face.

I don’t mind keeping the mask on while quickly eliminating some frames but once I’m down to 2 or 3 that I’m seriously considering I would like to see how they suit my full face.

I suppose the only option is to ask if I can quickly pull the mask down out of the way of everyone else. Or ask to stand outside the shop to look in a mirror? Or buy all three and then return them instantly on arrival if they don’t suit (that would be a massive waste of time and resource though).

I got new glasses last week. I was given a little tub to put anything I'd tried in. Tried some, Specsavers staff came over, I asked for opinion on some, picked a pair, job done! Other than wearing a mask there was no difference to the usual. I wear a mask all the time at work so that's what I'm used to seeing, iyswim.

NastyBlouse · 09/01/2021 11:08

I did this a few months back. Small independent optician, not a chain.

I was the only person in the shop besides the opticians.

They said I could take my mask off to try on frames.

Each frame I tried they put on a separate tray to be wiped down before they went back on the display/shelf.

SomewhatBored · 09/01/2021 11:08

I’m also going I to store with a list of ones I have seen online.

Bear in mind if it's a smaller outlet they might not all be in stock. I was disappointed last time when the pair I loved on the virtual try on weren't in my local branch. I didn't really want to ask about ordering them in case they didn't look as good in real life!

LeSangeEstDansLarbre · 09/01/2021 11:11

My husband did the try on at home and didn’t bother trying on in the real at Specsavers, but he has a normal sized face! I have a small face and didn’t want to risk it so I chose the same frames I had last time, knowing that they fit me. The names are usually on the arms. Any help?

B33Fr33 · 09/01/2021 11:12

Yes, I've got new glasses much easier than seeing a dentist! Significantly lower by
Bets and the store only does booking online, so no walking in. I tried on frames those I was done with were put into a basket to be cleaned before going back out. They were constantly cleaning and wiping. Everyone in masks. It felt very thought out. My frames were delivered to the house, my daughter's to store for a fit check.

B33Fr33 · 09/01/2021 11:13

*lower numbers in store even!

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 09/01/2021 11:16

My DD got new glasses a few months ago and was allowed to try on only
Bugbear is they send them to you in the post now instead of you going to collect and have them fitted properly so ended up having to take her back to have them fitted properly so not sure how that actually helped anything 🤷‍♀️

ComDummings · 09/01/2021 11:17

I just pulled my mask down to try on frames, they were fine with that (they told me I could before I started looking) and every pair I tried was taken away to be cleaned. It only takes a second to pop the frames on, pull mask down and look in the mirror/snap a photo on your phone. I didn’t like having my mask down, I felt bad for the staff but they encouraged me and I didn’t breathe while I had the mask down as I felt that was polite Grin it was fine.

Nooch · 09/01/2021 11:17

I went to Secsavers just before Xmas. They were really good. The took temp on arrival. You can select as many glasses to try on without your mask in a screened off area and staff still help (I have a small head so I find a second opinion useful). They clean all the glasses in a UV machine. They even let me go back in when I had changed my mind about one of the pairs and swap them even though they had ordered the lenses.

EileenGC · 09/01/2021 11:22

I could pull mine down for a few seconds to look in the mirror, when I had it narrowed to the last 2-3 choices. Staff moved back so they were a good distance away. This was in August though, so it might be different now.

All the frames go back on a counter and they disinfect them before putting them back on display.

SaltyTootsieToes · 09/01/2021 11:25

I had to go to Specsavers a few times during lock down (but for hearing test abd hearing aids).

No one is allowed in without an appointment so there are few people inside. Door to shop was locked. They ask about your appointment before opening the door. Only person with appointment (bless you need a carer or accompanying parent if a child) allowed in. No one else with you allowed in.

You need to wear a mask at all times, sanitise your hands upon entry. Yes, You can wear a mask while trying on glasses and during eye exam, masks don’t interfere with this.

The staff are in PPE. They took precautions very seriously. In my case, everything was cleaned before and after both myself and audiologist touching.

DH had glasses during this time too. He had same experience.

We’re both very concerned about where we go, interactions and keeping as safe as possible. Felt Specsavers were doing excellent job of being covid safe both for customers and their staff.

SmallYappyTypeDog · 09/01/2021 11:30

I picked a selection I liked the look of in Specsavers and the assistant also found some for me. I then got to sit at a small table and pull my mask down to try on properly. After all the ones I didn't want were taken to be sanitised. Found it very relaxing actually.

June628 · 09/01/2021 11:43

I went to Specsavers & had to try them with a mask on & then put them in a basket to be disinfected. They did let me pull my mask down a little bit so I can see how they look but I can’t say it really helped. I chose ones similar to my old ones so I knew they’d suit me 🤷🏼‍♀️
