Went for a 32 week growth scan today as my bmi is high.. Dr told me weight is in 75th centile.. abdomen size is off the chart high but no gestational diabetes... what does this mean... and can anyone tell me how much they think my baby might weigh from this??? X

Did they do the glucose tolerance test for GD?

75th centile isn’t huge - my baby measured on the 97th centile and was born 10 days early at 8lb. But it’s unusual for the abdominal circ to be so much higher than the rest. It can slightly increase chances of some complications in birth, but if they have any concerns they will talk you through your options.

Wellpark · 08/01/2021 21:35

I had gestational diabetes with my youngest of three and he was the lightest of my babies. He weighed 7lbs 14

ThankyouLinus · 08/01/2021 21:35

I don't trust these predictions myself. My scans were always marked on the 50th centile. He was born at 40+3 weighing 10lb 4oz, 91st centile, no GD.

HavelockVetinari · 08/01/2021 21:36

There's no way strangers on the internet can tell you how much your baby will weigh.

The important thing to do is minimise any further weight gain, as with a high BMI you're more likely to have a large baby - your midwife should've given you some advice on this.

Try not to worry too much, the growth scans are there to keep an eye on things so they can spot problems if they occur and deal with them.

BlazeMonsterMachine · 08/01/2021 21:37

Can't tell from what data you've given, but there are some websites which you can put in some information which you've maybe been given from the scan and they'll estimate the birth weight.

The 36 week one should give you more data to go off.

My LO had a large abdomen (though within the "normal" range but top end), was born weighing 9lbs. (At the 36 week scan her weight was estimated as 7lbs).

Merryoldgoat · 08/01/2021 21:38

There is no way of knowing I’m afraid. Scans are notoriously shit at predicting weights.

Oldest DS was 90tg centile on scans projected 9lb - was 11lb.

Youngest DS was on 96th and they were expecting a similar size. 9lb 6

75th centile is. Is big but not scary big. The thigh bone length will give you a good sense of the length though - both my boys has very long femurs and are both about two years ahead height wise.

Merryoldgoat · 08/01/2021 21:40

Also my BMI was high - I put on 11lb in total with older baby and 3st with younger - I was as pre preg weight within 2 weeks both times - weight gain and fluid and massive baby.

smeerf · 08/01/2021 21:42

They didn't pick up how big my first was - he ended up 9lb15 (induced but no issues). DS2 had all sorts of growth scans because of how big he was showing as but ended up only 9lb. Didn't have any issues delivering either of them despite their size so don't worry too much.

fucksanta1 · 08/01/2021 21:44

Don't trust the measurements at all
First baby- told was going to be large she was 7lb 2oz
Second- told he would be small and he was 8lb 5oz

millymollymoomoo · 08/01/2021 21:45

My scans predicted 8lb. Was actually 9.15

I wouldn’t worry too much !

JollyJlly · 08/01/2021 21:55

You grow a baby that is the right size for you. My lo was 9lb 10oz. I had a lovely normal delivery. Don’t panic. Also. Read Positive Birth book it will re frame it for you.

Norwayreally · 08/01/2021 21:57

With the abdominal measurement and your BMI I’m surprised they didn’t recommend taking blood sugar readings for a week to see whether you have GD or not.

I had GD in my last pregnancy. My GTT was normal at 26 weeks but by 34 weeks he weighed 7 lbs and his abdomen was 99th centile so I had to test my blood sugar for a week. Low and behold I had GD. Had to take metformin until he was born. He weighed 9 lbs 11.

usethedata · 08/01/2021 21:59

My first baby was predicted to be 7lb. Was 9lb 5oz. Third baby was predicted between 9 and 10 lbs and tummy was big... was 7lb 10oz and there was loads of amniotic fluid. I think these predictions are only useful if they show something extreme, they are so prone to error

Duemarch2021 · 08/01/2021 22:12

Bit more info.....

Yes I have had my glucose tolerance test for GD and I don't have it...

I also haven't put much weight on really since being pregnant only about 9lbs... my bmi was 34 when i got pregnant and thats why i was told to have growth scans..

I eat quite healthily.. quite educated in the nutrition department lol know how to cook healthily.. eat my 5 a day etc... i do snack at night on chocolate alot... had no dietician or any guidance on weight from midwife or any nurses..

I know nobody on here can tell me.. but really i mean what are other peoples experiences of this as this is ny first baby and i dont have a clue about anything and havnt really had anybody speak to me about what my notes mean or what pregnancy is like..

My babys measurements tend to be quite average apart from the abdomen measurement which was over the chart on centiles.. they havnt told me i should worry but obviously its a little worrying... i was told she weighs 5lb now and im week 32 .. so was just wondering how weight usually works as hoping for vaginal birth but terrified of pushing out a 10lb baby lol

Baby 1, only slightly high measurements, 1 week overdue, 9lb 11oz.

Baby 2 - measured large, then after late growth scan told he was only going to be about 7lb. Born at due date about 2 weeks later, 9lb.

No one knows!

Sh05 · 08/01/2021 22:41

I had multiple growth scans with all my pregnancies as first was only 5lb 3. In all of them bar the last one I was told baby would be around 7lb 6 Ish at birth. None were heavier than 6lb 3. My youngest was born 7lb 1 and she's the only one which was even close to the mark. She's my fifth

2fatbyfar · 09/01/2021 00:23

I was warned I'd have a big baby as I am a fatty and the bump was a fatty, but dd was 7lbs and well cooked (42 weeks!) And still petite for her age.

2fatbyfar · 09/01/2021 00:26

Hmm doesn't read very well dd is 10 and still small (both height and weight) for her age dunno why as both DH and myself are great glumphing beasts.

Aahotep · 09/01/2021 00:37

Both times I was told mine were big.
Both times they were just under 7lbs.
Take it with a pinch of salt.

Scbchl · 09/01/2021 00:40

Its impossible to tell really unless they gave you a weight estimate even then they can be wrong. I was told my dh was around 6lbs at 32 weeks and he was 9lb 9.5 at birth (39+5) he was up in the high 90th century.

Scbchl · 09/01/2021 00:41

Ds not dh 😂

eachtigertires · 09/01/2021 00:57

Mine was on the 60th centile at the 32 week scan and was 7lb 7oz so distinctly average. I was offered another growth scan at 38ish weeks but declined as I figured it wouldn’t make a difference either way the baby would come out.

TeeniefaeTroon · 09/01/2021 01:06

I was measuring small and was being monitored by a consultant for the last few weeks. DS was on the 95th centile and was 9lb 4oz. Scans aren't accurate.

AddictedToRadley · 09/01/2021 01:29

I was told by one sonographer that DD was around 5lbs9 at 32 weeks and about 7lbs2 at 34 weeks (weekly scans). I had GD and was worried about the weight. I was induced at 38 weeks and was expecting a baby of 10.5-11lbs so we only bought 0-3 month baby clothes. My first words when she was born was ‘she’s so small’ over and over again. She was 6lbs12oz but very petite and only fitted tiny baby clothes. I had to send DH to Mothercare to buy premature clothes to fit 2-5lb babies as she was that tiny, even then she was lost in them!! Her nappies were from NICU as she didn’t fit size 0 pampers. You really can’t go by the scans. They’re there to give you an idea but even then they’re pretty inaccurate. As one sonographer once told DH and I, a scan to guess an unborn babies weight is like doing an X-ray of an adult in the next room trying to guess their weight by measuring their stomach as they swim around in a pool/bath. Pretty sound analogy really Grin
Congratulations on your baby, hope you get to relax and enjoy your final few weeks of pregnancy and then have a smooth delivery with fast recovery afterwards. FlowersBear

gallbladderpain · 09/01/2021 01:45

Told with my first at 36 weeks that baby was weighing over 8lb ...baby was born 2 weeks later at 38 weeks weighing only 7 and a half pound
Was told at 34 weeks with number 2 that baby was 3 and a half pound. Went into labour just before 36 weeks and predictions from all the doctors and consultants were a 4lb baby. Baby born at 6 and a half pound
So yeh I really don't think predictions are very accurate
