Went for a 32 week growth scan today as my bmi is high.. Dr told me weight is in 75th centile.. abdomen size is off the chart high but no gestational diabetes... what does this mean... and can anyone tell me how much they think my baby might weigh from this??? X

@JollyJlly that is not true many women in times gone by have died because they were unable to give birth to their babies because the baby was to big. It is also one of the reasons why women with diabetes are monitored so closely during pregnancy to ensure the baby doesn’t get to big whilst in the womb.

NiceandCalm · 09/01/2021 04:11

A BMI of 34 is high. I put on about 4 stone by the time I was full term. I was a light-weight pre pregnancy - fell straight off afterwards thankfully. I was tested for GD but was borderline. My DS was 8.10. Born by planned CS for other reasons.
So many factors involved OP, none of which you can change. I hope all goes really well and try not to worry.

santabetterwashhishands · 09/01/2021 04:18

I had a growth scan at 40 weeks estimating him to be 9.14 .
He was born at 41 weeks weighing 10.7 so pretty accurate for me as theysay half a pound a week in the final few weeks. No gd

GenericUsername101 · 09/01/2021 04:32

I was told both mine were big, DS1 always measured in the 90s centile wise, born at 39 weeks at 8' 11", ds2 they were worried was getting huge and had booked in to induce me at 39 weeks if he hadn't come by then, but he came at 37wk 6 days and he was only 8' 3", back to back too but no major issues with either birth. Don't stress too much about the size if the doctors aren't concerned.

bubblesforlife · 09/01/2021 07:07

OP I’m in a similar position as you, except I don’t have a high BMI.
I was told last week at my 36 week scan that baby’s head was normal, but body was off the charts and it has really long legs.
I also have extra amniotic fluid around baby it seems.
I’m booked in next week to be scanned by a consultant and hopefully will see if the original scan was correct. It can’t come around quick enough.

JollyJlly · 09/01/2021 07:07

@Disneyforever1974 it’s an issue if GD, which they don’t have. And in years gone by there was inadequate maternal care. This scaremongering to those getting ready to give birth is unhelpful and more likely to cause interventions because it changes how you react. We should be supportive and provide confidence because your midwife or obs is there to make sure you give birth safely.

MinnieJackson · 09/01/2021 08:36

I had GD with ds2, he was my biggest baby out of four...7lbs Grin My first was only on the 4th centile when he was born but nothing was picked up on scans as I only had 2 and my bump was measuring correctly. My last baby was apparently going to be a big boy and he was 6lb 4. I had loads of scans with him because of previous complications, I don't think they can be that accurate. Try not to worry! Royalbloo · 09/01/2021 08:51

In my experience it's just a guess. They kept going on about DD being big but she was 5lb 6. Then they harped on about her being small. She's perfectly fine now and put weight on well after birth. They don't know!

Disneyforever1974 · 09/01/2021 11:54

@JollyJlly I’m not scaremongering, some women can have babies that are too big for a vaginal birth, but due to advances in medical care this is rarely an issue these days. Being supportive to women due to give birth includes giving them all relevant information of things that can/can’t happen. Saying women only grow babies to a size they can give birth to is giving false information and that is why I passed comment.

Luckystar1 · 09/01/2021 12:05

OP, I’m petite, a size 6-8 and 5ft 5. My last baby was 9lb 10oz and was born at 39 weeks. My others have been 9lb or thereabouts. All my babies have been predicted to be small (although no actual scans, just on palpating my bump).

Bigger doesn’t mean a horrible labour in my experience. Mine were very straightforward, zero stitches or tearing.

Best of luck to you!

Rowgtfc72 · 09/01/2021 18:49

I was caught with GD. Dd measured off the scale at 34 weeks. Was induced at bang on 37 weeks and she weighed 8lbs 6oz. Consultant predicted 10 lbs plus if left till term.
Just adding dh is 6ft 6in and not small.....

mollypuss1 · 09/01/2021 18:56

My midwife told me my DD would be huge and to not be surprised if she topped 10lbs.

She was born at 40+1 weighing 7lb 2oz

Londonmummy66 · 11/01/2021 00:09

I was told DD2 was likely to be a big baby (they thought probably 10lb). She was only 7lb but really long and skinny (off the top of the chart for length). The scans aren't that reliable.

AddictedToRadley · 27/01/2021 18:47

@Duemarch2021 and @bubblesforlife
Any news? Have either of you had your babies or had further scans? Hoping all is going well for you both and that your babies are both doing well.
Good luck Bear Bear Flowers Flowers (for both)

At our antenatal class, we were shown an outline of a large baby and a small baby, superimposed. The biggest points (head and shoulders) were practically the same size, so we were reassured that it shouldn't make too much difference.

Dogonahottinroof · 27/01/2021 20:07

With my 1st I was enormous- from 6 months people were saying any day now- turned out to be excessive water and an 8lb 13 baby

2nd baby- small all the way through pregnancy. Went for a final scan at 39 weeks where the last note from the consultant were that the baby was now not likely to need additional support for being underweight and no longer a high risk pregnancy.

The baby arrived 8 days later. 12lbs+ and the largest baby born at the hospital for over 12 months. Apparently they consultants note was copied and put on the staffroom wall with his birth weight added.

Oysterbabe · 27/01/2021 21:15

My son was predicted to be over 9lbs but he was 8lbs 1. He had a 98% centile head though. He's 3 now and still has a huge head Grin

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 27/01/2021 21:19

Try not to worry.
They told me my baby was going to be over 5kg. They pushed and pushed me to have an induction and when I refused that they wanted to do a c section. Eventually agreed to induction on my due date.
She was not 5kg. She was 9lb 5oz. Admittedly big, however my first three were 8lb 6oz, 9lb 7oz and 9lb 5oz so I was never going to have a small baby. Modern medicine is fab and I have a lot of respect for the professionals but those bloody scans can be so inaccurate and cause so much worry.

Skigal86 · 27/01/2021 21:35

I know one person who was told her baby was going to be smaller than they actually were.

I know A LOT of people who were told their babies would be bigger than they were - mine included, she arrived just over a week after my last scan and was 1lb smaller (although still substantial!) than estimated - but with a big tummy and long legs.

I had GD and there were some concerns about shoulder dystocia because of the size of her tummy, and ended up being induced at 39 weeks resulting in forceps but we both came out of it relatively unscathed and with no lasting damage.

Amanduh · 27/01/2021 21:36

Literally nothing 🤣😂🙈 They are SO inaccurate. My first baby was 90th percentile on the scans but was a 7lb newborn. I put on 14lb. My second baby born this year, I had a growth scan a week before delivery as my 1st baby got stuck due to his big head. I put on 6lb. They said all looked fine, his weight was estimated 7lb 14oz. He was born (csection this time as again, he was stuck due to a big head) and they handed me my second 7lb-er, weighing in at... 10lb 13oz 😬😱

MrsJohnLuther · 27/01/2021 22:31

75 % ile isn't huge. DS was over 100 %ile on all measurements (im not even sure how that is statistically possible!). No GD in any pregnancy, believe me if they were worried about your babies size you'd be tested. I was tested 3 times in my 4th pregnancy....Based on the size estimates from the scans and the fact I'd had 2 previously large babies - 10lb, and 8lb at 37 weeks, plus precipitate labours so real chance of delivering at home- I was induced at just on 38 weeks. DS was 11lb, estimated at 12 to 12.5lb if id gone to term.

AintOverUntilTheCatLadySings · 28/01/2021 10:38

My baby was measuring over 120% for size etc. I was told that I'd need a c section at 38 weeks because he was so big. Was told he'd be over 10lbs as his growth was accelerated.

My last scan measured him at 7lbs 11 at 35 weeks.

He ended up coming early (I went in to labour) at 37 weeks and weighed 7lbs 8.

So, not entirely accurate.

Imapotato · 28/01/2021 10:41

Dd1 was 75th centile at birth I think (as far as I can remember without digging out her red book. She’s now 16, so it’s been a while). She weight 8lb11, so on the big side, but not really huge.

MakeWorkYourNewFavourite · 28/01/2021 10:44

I had GD. They kept telling me my baby was giant. Giant abdomen, giant head. I was very worried. They said she'd be over 5 kilos. She was 3.5. Bang on average. Born at 40 + 5.
