To not bother with broadband?

AIBU to not bother with broadband?

We are going to be cut off in a few weeks and I can't be arsed to shop around, plus we will need a new bt line installed.

We are with Virgin but our renew price was stupid. We have TV in two rooms and phone, broadband. Renewal was high even for just the internet and phone without the TV it would have cost us more then it does now Hmm

Anyway bt lines are all that's left and I can't be bothered. Kids use it for school but it's tough shit really isn't it. Me and DH don't need it for work so, I'm thinking just leave it?

How U am I being to think I can survive without in 2021?

Should say we have mobile data on phones for email.
Kids will have to have paper copies of work.

‘Penmanship’ wtf? Who uses pens anymore? Children need to be taught to write legibly, but ‘penmanship?’ Really?

Must be for all those illuminated manuscripts they need to write.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 09/01/2021 09:20

How much did they quote? We pay 20quid a month for landline and Wi-Fi. Good enough for me to work from home and dc to be on devices all day as needed (Virgin). We have a smart tv so don't need the th package.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 09/01/2021 09:26

We found Vodafone mobile broadband fastest and cheapest of all. No standing charge.

We were with BT. They couldn’t cope with the 17 items connected to the internet in our house😳. Even in their super fast. Vodafone copes with them all, plus the 2 extras that we now have... 19 devices....😳😳😳😳

I have a friend called Karen. I don’t like that term..

There is no indication that the op is racist, or a conspiracy theorist.

Haggertyjane · 09/01/2021 09:58

That way lies madness.

AWeeBit · 09/01/2021 10:02

Why not get a mobile dongle unit? They are really good prices with high data limits and don't have long contracts.

Voluntarily going without broadband is kind of ridiculous in 2021.

JerichosPenisInADeadChickHat · 09/01/2021 10:34

@Snazzles2020 really? Hmm

Whatever the OP is, using any thread to give you space to be a misogynistic prick is vile.

@ItsIgginningtolookalotlikeXmas

Oh, *@Oodlenoodle12* I thought you had to have a landline to have broadband, I'd love to get rid of a landline that no one ever phone on.
No landline needed on fibre broadband, only the old copper broadband version. Worth having a look on the comparison websites and then checking if they connect to the cabinet or the property as the property is best.

So did DD's primary. She's Y8 now so not long ago.

There is. It's just that the landline is fibre optic rather than copper.

Totally unreasonable just for this part

TheUndoingProject · 12/01/2021 14:47

I think you need to prioritise your kids education. Even if you can get hold of them, a few worksheets aren’t going to make up for missing out on online teaching and the socialising the internet offers kids at the moment. I’d go without an awful lot at the moment before I’d deprive my kids of broadband.

Not with virgin... Who Op is leaving.
ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 12/01/2021 14:58

Xmas, we don’t have a landline on Vodafone mobile broadband. No bloody standing charge either!

alienspiderbee · 12/01/2021 15:04

I think there are some new regulations coming in about not allowing the huge price discrepancies between new and existing customers. Virgin seem to be one of the worst, we pay comparatively a lot for phone and broadband, but it's not easy to switch as no phone line and we can't risk being without broadband by threatening to leave.

PaxMalmKallax · 12/01/2021 15:05

OP I assume you’re just being a goady twat, but just in case you’re not you are be the most unreasonable selfish person I have ever heard of! Your poor kids being parented by someone who literally couldn’t care less about their education!!! And FYI no the school won’t “just keep paper copies” Go and give your head a wobble and then sort out your broadband!!!!

RaspberryCoulis · 12/01/2021 15:09

@XelaM

Absolute madness with 3 kids school age and quite selfish parenting. They need broadband for school.
Quite. Can't be arsed to go on a price comparison site, can't be arsed to shop around. Doesn't care because she doesnt have Netflix.

Or is this one of those threads where the OP is hoping that someone with one eye on her kids' education parachutes in an offers to pay the contract for her?

How does the data get into the property? Is it wireless?

tttigress · 12/01/2021 15:22

It is interesting how much money people will pump to Virgin without even thinking about it. Virgin is actually incredibly expensive.

Having said that, I am not sure how people can be without broadband these days, it's kind of more important than having a TV.

I would just see if you can get some broadband deal via the phone line.

tttigress · 12/01/2021 15:28

@AmandaHugenkiss

I use giffgaff with a mobile sim router. About £40 on Amazon for the router, and about £20 a month for the data. We run Amazon, Netflix, bbc etc and all our internet off it no issues. Price of broadband with unwanted landline was ridiculous.
This seems like a good idea.
alienspiderbee · 12/01/2021 15:53

The point is she doesn't have a phone line.

In the area we live in we've had fibre into houses for 20 years, it's very common for there to be no landline so any change requires paying a hefty installation fee.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 12/01/2021 17:19

Changi no it uses the BT phone line, but BT are not in the loop. It’s mobile super fast broadband. Our bill dropped from about £80.00 to £30.00. We had a crap BY package that had their tv on it. And we were really bitter about paying for the landline when we never used it. When we transferring we kept getting texts from BT saying our new broadband ‘might not work’. What a load of crap! 1/2 the price and twice the speed.

We don’t have a landline number ( what’s the point?)

However when the whole area lost signal over Christmas, it was still up to Openreach to sort it out😢

I'm being a bit thick here, but doesn't this still require some kind of line to the house?
