To not bother with broadband?

AIBU to not bother with broadband?

We are going to be cut off in a few weeks and I can't be arsed to shop around, plus we will need a new bt line installed.

We are with Virgin but our renew price was stupid. We have TV in two rooms and phone, broadband. Renewal was high even for just the internet and phone without the TV it would have cost us more then it does now Hmm

Anyway bt lines are all that's left and I can't be bothered. Kids use it for school but it's tough shit really isn't it. Me and DH don't need it for work so, I'm thinking just leave it?

How U am I being to think I can survive without in 2021?

Should say we have mobile data on phones for email.
Kids will have to have paper copies of work.

£25 a month here with plusnet for unlimited broadband on copper, plenty of speed for TV downloads, zoom etc etc. That is with unlimited landline calls, so if you are happy talking on a mobile you could get it for less.

£120 odd one off to put the line in.

hayleysmiles · 08/01/2021 17:31

Of course you're being unreasonable. The whole world works online now.

And your children need it for their education!!!! But you won't have it because you can't be arsed to shop around, what a joke. But the school is expected to fuck around printing stuff and trying to mark by hand, entitled

pointythings · 08/01/2021 17:34

I'm not sure you're for real, but if you are then yes, you are being very unwise and you do need broadband. Currently all learning is online, so without good Internet, your 13yo will fall behind. As your kids get older, they will only need the Internet more. By the time they're doing GCSEs, some independent research and reading will be needed. That ramps up in 6th form. Your pathetic 2 GB of data that you want to share among the 4 of you will last you a maximum of 2 days out of the full month.

Pull your finger out, do your comparison research and get the bloody broadband.

19lottie82 · 08/01/2021 17:40

I cancelled my Virgin package and asked for a price for just internet, it was too expensive so I told them to cancel it. A few days later someone called me and offered me 50mb (or maybe it was 100mb I’m not sure) for £26 a month.

I think you would be quite mean to disadvantage your kids by removing your internet, unless you actually can’t afford it.

waxed · 08/01/2021 17:46

At the school I work in, there are no paper copies. people who don't have IT equipment or internet access due to poverty reasons are being provided with it. If you can reasonably afford and just won't get it, you will be seen as an extremely difficult parent.

I just don't understand why you would make life so much more difficult for your children.

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 08/01/2021 17:50

@titchy

This seems very unfair on kids who have not got a laptop or internet. In fact, it's damn right shit of schools Mine do not work on laptops in school.

I'd say it was damn right shit of you as parents given you can afford it, you just can't be arsed.

But I'll never understand parents with so little regard for their kids education.

And I'm surprised they've never need to look something up, use MyMsths, access any of the homework apps or websites, BBC bite size etc.

You're failing your kids frankly.

Totally agree it certainly doesn’t sound like the OP can’t afford it she just can’t be bothered, poor kids, it will affect their education so badly forever behind their peers, it’s things like this that children will remember and carry the resentment into adulthood, way to go to maintain a good relationship with her children.
vanillandhoney · 08/01/2021 18:16

I did exactly this, this morning. I took the first deal they offered me, but if you tell them your situation, you might be able to get them down even cheaper.

What situation? OP hasn't said she can't afford it, she just can't be arsed to shop around.

JerichosPenisInADeadChickHat · 08/01/2021 18:27

"In fact, it's damn right shit of schools! Mine do not work on laptops in school. They have books and paper."

And teachers presumably? This isn't "shit of schools". It is shit of you though. What a way to treat your kids

TheSoapyFrog · 08/01/2021 18:35

You're being incredibly unreasonable, and selfish. Your children need to have broadband right now. You want paper copies of work, how does that work? The teacher photocopies the work, posts it to you, it arrives a couple of days later, the kids do the work and you buy an envelope and a stamp and post it back?
If you were in a bad financial situation maybe I would understand, but you "can't be arsed to shop around" and that's a pretty shitty reason.

pointythings · 08/01/2021 18:37

There is also the fact that schools don't have the money to give out paper copies of everything. School budgets have bene slashed in the past 10 years. There's a reason why everything is online now.

YeaOkay · 08/01/2021 18:40

Well some of you have been rude for no reason. Oh I'm entitled because a teacher might have to print some work off? Oh sorry I forgot me and everyone else pays tax for these teachers to sit in front of a computer screen. Lord forbit, they have to mark with a pen. Gosh.

Oh my 13 year old will be screwed because they are not using a screen for a few months? Really? Even though by the time they are 23 windows 10 and whatever iOS will be out of date. No, they don't type their work at school, they use a pen. Hmm

Some if not most of you, clearly missed the part where I said, I will have to have a bt line installed. So no it's not just sit and wait for the hub to drop through the door.

Tell you what if the school offer to pay me 120 for a new line and sit in and wait for the bt man then fine. Confused

Again it's not just as bloody simple as click, click and online.

To those who offered good advice, thank you. I will look at getting a mobile data hub, never knew about them.

🤦 Lord forbid you actually employ that brain you were given and realise it's bit of a different situation now. Gosh. I had sumpathy as a Virgin customer. You lost that

longdarkwinter · 08/01/2021 18:51

OP, I'm quite puzzled by the fact your 13yr old doesn't automatically use the internet regardless of the pandemic.
How do they research for homework normally?
Do they not have to type essays and prepare presentations?

Computer skills are an essential part of life. As a parent you need to be at least part responsible for ensuring your dc can learn.

britnay · 08/01/2021 18:53

How do you expect a teacher to print a video off?

vanillandhoney · 08/01/2021 18:54

Well, aren't you an absolute delight Grin

JerichosPenisInADeadChickHat · 08/01/2021 19:11

"Tell you what if the school offer to pay me 120 for a new line and sit in and wait for the bt man then fine"

Sit in and wait? 😂 where you all going? Because it's clearly not to school!

How on earth (and using what budget of it were even possible) are teachers going to print off their online lessons?

It's just a few months. Just leave the virgin as it is for a while if you don't want a BT line installed - instead of cutting your kids off completely

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 08/01/2021 19:30

Surely you realise that schools can't have parents traipsing in and out all bloody day picking up print outs? It isn't covid safe and defeats the point of closing. Plus are the teachers and staff even there?

Internet is a very basic utility now, its like saying what about kids who don't have electricity at home.

All this fuss about waiting in and having a line installed is silly. Your kids are off school so someone must be home with them as its not legal for the 13 year old to look after the younger two so literally all they have to do is let them in.

JerichosPenisInADeadChickHat · 08/01/2021 19:40

"To keep everything as is, was 20 pound more then now and for just the internet with phone was 5 pound more then now. It seems crazy."

Oh yes, 16p per day to keep your three kids connected to school during a lockdown - totally "crazy"

Don't spend that fiver all at once will you?

Mumski45 · 08/01/2021 19:43

YABVU if you can afford it but you haven't said this is the issue, it sounds more like you just can't be bothered. Kids need access to the internet for research and social reasons even more so now.
You did ask but don't seem to be prepared to listen to the responses.

How will your 13 yr old submit work to teachers for marking. A lot of the work my DC do is written in pen but then it still needs to be scanned or photographed and sent either by email or through teams.
You will be putting your kids at a significant disadvantage. Why would you do this just because you 'can't be bothered' to sort it.

Rhubarbcrumblerules · 08/01/2021 19:45

This has to be a windup

1Morewineplease · 08/01/2021 19:46

You really need to retain broadband for your children to access online learning and online support with their teachers.

CoffeeCreamandSugar · 08/01/2021 19:47

This is a wind up right? Are you doing this to try and force the school to take your children in?

titchy · 08/01/2021 19:48

So you expect teachers to print every lesson's resources and homework off (presumably with their own printer), post it to you. Then your child does the work, you post it back, teacher marks it, and posts it back again. In the meantime your child is at least two weeks behind their peers because they have sensible parents who email homework which takes seconds rather than the two weeks your method takes.

Is this a ploy to create extra employment for postmen and women?

SlipperTripper · 08/01/2021 20:00

Ha, where do you think you're going to be going? Surely now is the perfect time to 'sit in and wait' for a line to be installed?
